There is no clear universal winner between the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4. Their noise isolation is close overall, but they favor different sound and codec ecosystems, and fit may decide the comparison for you. This is a sourced comparison, not a claim of personal wear testing.
One important caveat: reports in 2026 identify the WF-1000XM6 as Sony’s successor to the XM5 and say Sennheiser revealed the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026. The comparison below concerns the XM5 and MTW4 specifically; current stock and prices vary by region and are not established here.
At a glance: Sony WF-1000XM5 vs Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4
RTINGS describes both as competitive premium earbuds and finds their noise isolation close, with each handling different parts of the frequency range somewhat better. The practical choice is less about a single overall score and more about which features match your devices, listening preferences and ears.

Which one has better noise cancellation?
There is no decisive winner on noise isolation in RTINGS’ comparison: it says the two are close overall. Its more specific distinction is that the MTW4 filters somewhat more midrange noise, while the XM5 blocks somewhat more bright treble noise. Which difference matters more depends on the noises you encounter and how each pair seals in your ears.
Those are comparative test findings, not a guarantee that one pair will sound quieter to every listener. Fit affects how well an earbud seals, so a comfortable, secure fit should weigh more than a small difference in a review comparison.

Sound and codec compatibility
Choose around your devices, not the longest codec list
RTINGS identifies LDAC support on the Sony and aptX Adaptive, aptX Low Latency, aptX High Quality and aptX HD on the Sennheiser. These options can influence a choice if your phone or other playback device supports the codec you want to use. Check compatibility for your exact device rather than assuming a codec works across all Android phones or other platforms.
Tom’s Guide describes the MTW4 as challenging Sony’s earlier position, pointing to updated Bluetooth specifications and a retuned sound signature. That is the outlet’s editorial assessment, not a controlled finding that the Sennheiser sounds better for everyone. The evidence here does not establish a universal sound-quality winner.

Fit, size and everyday comfort
Physical fit is a personal decision, not a reliable category to settle from a product comparison alone. RTINGS calls the Sony slightly less chunky and notes its memory foam tips; SoundGuys describes the Sennheiser pair as bulkier. Those observations may help you decide which to try first, but they cannot predict which one will fit your ears securely.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild, water resistance and app support
Sennheiser specifies IP54 dust and splash resistance for the MTW4 earbuds only, not the charging case. Its product page also lists support for the Smart Control app on iOS and Android. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent verification of durability.
Sennheiser lists the MTW4 at 6.2 g per earbud, 66.4 g for the charging case and 72.4 g for the earbuds and case together. These are the manufacturer’s stated figures; they are not independent measurements. The sources used here do not establish equivalent Sony specifications for this comparison.

Compare actual prices and generations before paying
Both models have successors reported in 2026: What Hi-Fi? reports the WF-1000XM6 arrived as Sony’s successor to the XM5, and reports that Sennheiser revealed the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026. These reports do not establish current regional stock or pricing. Compare the models actually available to you, including their prices, before choosing an older generation; the evidence here does not show whether the newer models are in stock where you live or represent better value.
