The Sony WF-1000XM5 remains a capable noise-cancelling earbud, but it is no longer the unquestioned king: Sony’s newer WF-1000XM6 has arrived, and current comparisons report better noise cancellation and sound. The XM5 can still be a worthwhile buy at a substantial discount, provided its foam tips fit you comfortably and you do not rely on it for top-tier call quality.
How good is the WF-1000XM5’s noise cancellation?
Its active noise cancellation works alongside the ear tips’ passive seal. RTINGS describes the XM5’s overall isolation as excellent, making it a strong option for reducing everyday background noise. But no single result makes it a permanent category winner: fit, the sound being blocked, firmware, test methods and the earbuds used for comparison all affect the outcome.
Seal is especially important with in-ear headphones. RTINGS reports a stable fit, but notes that the supplied foam tips may be uncomfortable for some people. If the tips do not seal well or become uncomfortable during longer sessions, you may not get the isolation the design is capable of.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There are limits in difficult conditions. RTINGS says loud, sustained noise can overwhelm the XM5’s onboard noise handling. Treat claims about cancellation as relative performance, not a promise that all noise—or every voice—will disappear.
#1 Best Overall
- This Certified Refurbished product is manufacturer refurbished, shows limited or no wear, and includes all original accessories plus a 90-day limited hardware warranty.
- The WF-1000XM5 features the Integrated Processor V2 for audio clarity and active noise cancellation.
- Three microphones in each earbud actively cancel out distracting ambient sounds.
- Foam ear tips with an adjusted ear tip angle provide ultimate comfort.
- The latest upgrades to Sony's flagship earbuds include a redesigned ear bud and charging case that's smaller and lighter.
Does the XM5 still deserve the “king” label?
Not as the current, uncontested leader. The WF-1000XM6 has succeeded the XM5. RTINGS reports further noise-cancellation and microphone improvements in the newer model, while What Hi-Fi? finds improvements in both cancellation and sound. What Hi-Fi? still considers the XM5 a solid performer, particularly when discounted. Those comparisons make the XM5 a relevant alternative, not a clear current-generation champion.
There is no objective, permanent crown established by the available reviews: results depend on the test method and comparison set. For a purchase decision, compare the two generations on the things that affect your use rather than relying on the “king” label.

What are the XM5’s main strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths
- Effective isolation: RTINGS describes overall noise isolation as excellent when the ear tips provide a suitable seal.
- Feature-rich specification: Sony lists multipoint, ambient sound mode, wireless charging through the case and support for several Bluetooth codecs.
- Potential value at a discount: The XM5 remains a solid performer, according to What Hi-Fi?, particularly when sold for substantially less than the newer generation.
Weaknesses
- Fit is personal: The foam tips may feel uncomfortable to some listeners, and a poor seal can compromise passive isolation.
- Microphones lag: RTINGS calls recording quality poor; SoundGuys also says the earbuds’ microphones do not match Sony’s WH-1000XM5 over-ear headphones.
- Strong sustained noise can get through: RTINGS notes that loud, continuous noise can overwhelm the noise-handling system.
- Default sound may not suit everyone: SoundGuys identifies bass-heavy default tuning as a drawback, though app features and EQ may help listeners who prefer a different balance.
How long does the battery last?
Sony specifies up to 8 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 12 hours with it off. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed results; actual playback depends on use and settings. Sony lists communication time separately: up to 6 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 7 hours with it off. Do not treat those call figures as music-playback ratings.

Sony also specifies IPX4-equivalent water resistance. Codec support does not guarantee that every format or feature will be available on every phone: check your device and settings before buying, particularly if you are choosing the XM5 for a specific codec.

Should you buy the WF-1000XM5?
Consider the XM5 if you find it at a substantial discount, its foam tips suit your ears, and your priorities are noise isolation and a feature-rich wireless set rather than the strongest microphones. If the price gap is small, the newer XM6 is the more current choice on the cited comparisons’ noise cancellation and sound findings.

That is launch context, not a current price. Retail prices and availability vary, so compare the live cost of both generations before deciding.
Sony’s support search result surfaced firmware version 6.1.0, but its update notes were not available in the cited material. There is not enough information here to say whether that firmware changed cancellation, microphones or battery life.
