Sony has published patent filings for non-player characters (NPCs) that would react to what is happening in a scene, build personality from player-chosen data, and be tested before players meet them. These are proposals. None of the cited records names a Sony game, release date, or launch plan for these systems. The Sony AI feature players can use today is GT Sophy 2.0, a racing opponent in Gran Turismo 7, and it is a different kind of system.
What “less predictable” means in Sony’s filings
The headline is shorthand. The filings do not aim for random behavior. The core problem they describe is generic NPC behavior: a character that follows a fixed routine, repeats a small set of actions, or says the same lines no matter what the player is doing. The proposed fix is to make NPC behavior respond to the scene and to the player character. A character that reacts to a situation feels less scripted, which is what “less predictable” is trying to capture.
The three patent proposals
Context-aware NPCs: EP 4 556 088 A1
European patent application EP 4 556 088 A1 names Sony Interactive Entertainment as applicant and Kelsey Chew as inventor. It was filed October 31, 2024 and published May 21, 2025. The method has four steps:
- Collect game-state data from the current gameplay.
- Identify and filter scene-interactivity data, so only relevant interactions feed the next step.
- Generate context-aware logic from the filtered data.
- Apply that logic to an NPC associated with the current gameplay scene.
The intended effect is behavior that responds to the player character in context. The application’s background section lists the generic behaviors it wants to move beyond: fixed routines and small repeated sets of actions or dialogue.

Personalized NPCs: US 2025/0235789 A1
Sony’s US application US 2025/0235789 A1 was published July 24, 2025. It describes a player choosing a person or data source to serve as an NPC “seed.” The seed could be drawn from communications, audio, video, or text, and the NPC’s appearance or communication style is then personalized from it. The embodiments discuss consent, express notice, and user privacy settings.
This is a different mechanism from the context-aware filing. Personalization starts from data the player chooses to supply. Context-aware logic starts from what is happening in the game.

Testing generated NPCs: US 12,708,850 B2
US patent 12,708,850 B2 was issued August 18, 2026. Its method defines visual, physical, and test-game context parameters for an NPC, provides those parameters to an AI model to produce an interactive NPC, and introduces a test NPC. It then measures interaction quality and modifies the interactive NPC based on that measurement. This is a development and evaluation loop. It is aimed at how generated characters get checked, not at how they appear to players.

A GamesRadar report published October 8, 2026 describes another Sony patent proposal involving machine learning and dynamic game content, including NPC content generated before, during, or after play. The report itself notes that there is no way to tell whether Sony will implement it. For the claims themselves, read the patent record rather than secondary coverage.

The first three rows are patent proposals. Only the last row describes a shipped feature, and it is not the same kind of system as the NPC dialogue and behavior filings.
What is already in a game: GT Sophy 2.0
Sony AI describes GT Sophy 2.0 as a racing agent trained with deep reinforcement learning and designed for strong driving, tactics, and etiquette. It is a permanent feature of Gran Turismo 7 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Sony-reported figures
- More than 340 cars on nine different tracks, as reported by Sony AI in 2024.
- 95% of player car models, in the context of supported races, as reported by Sony AI in 2024.
These are Sony’s own numbers. No independent benchmark comparing GT Sophy’s capabilities was found in the sources used for this article, so treat them as Sony’s claims about its own agent.
Why Sony frames this around fun
In a Sony Interactive Entertainment blog post by Michael Stopa, Academic Manager, the company writes: “But more than realism and efficiency the driving theme of our research is what will make a game more fun.” Sony AI also describes its broader work as moving past traditional rule-based systems toward autonomous agents, deep reinforcement learning, multi-agent interaction, and infrastructure for training game agents.

That framing matters for how to read “less predictable.” Sony’s stated test is player enjoyment. An NPC that behaves erratically or unfairly would not meet that test, so the goal implied by the filings is more responsive behavior, not randomness.
What is not established
- No cited source measures how much less predictable NPCs become under these systems.
- No cited source shows that players enjoy the proposed NPCs more.
- No cited source names a game or launch date for the context-aware, personalized, or tested NPC systems.
- The public interest in AI-driven game characters is broader than Sony. An Associated Press report from September 2024, headlined “Can AI make video games more immersive?”, describes experimentation with AI-generated NPC dialogue and interaction, not universal adoption.
How to read the next Sony NPC headline
- Check whether the source is a patent record, a Sony statement, or a news summary of a patent.
- Note the publication or issue date, and the patent or application number.
- Look for a named game, platform, or release date. Patent filings usually do not include one.
- Check the current legal status of any application before calling it pending, since status can change.
- Separate the mechanism: scene-driven behavior, player-supplied personalization, and generated-NPC testing are different systems.
Sony’s filings show a clear direction: NPCs that respond to the scene, can be shaped from player-chosen data, and are evaluated before release. Nothing in the cited records shows when, or whether, any of this will reach a game. Until a title is named, the only Sony NPC-adjacent AI players can use is GT Sophy 2.0, and it works as a racing opponent, not as a context-aware character.
