A fully empty Sony SRS-XB12 takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes to charge when the speaker is turned off, according to Sony’s model-specific Help Guide. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed charge time: use, battery age, temperature, and charging conditions can affect it. The orange CHG light turns off when charging is complete.
How long does the SRS-XB12 take to charge?
Sony estimates about 4 hours and 30 minutes to charge an empty SRS-XB12 battery fully with the speaker off. Sony’s SRS-XB12 Help Guide is the most specific estimate for this model.
Sony also gives a general estimate of approximately three hours for an empty Bluetooth-speaker battery in a separate support article. That figure conflicts with the SRS-XB12-specific guide; Sony does not explain the difference. For this speaker, use the model-specific estimate rather than treating the general figure as a guaranteed charge time.
How to charge the speaker

Connect the supplied micro-USB cable to the speaker’s DC IN 5V jack.

For wall charging, connect the other end to a commercially available USB AC adapter with an output current of at least 500 mA, then plug the adapter into an AC outlet. Alternatively, connect the cable to a booted computer.

Turn the speaker off for charging. It can charge while playing, but the process may take longer, and at high volume its battery may still run down while connected to power.

Once charging is complete, close the port cap securely. Keep water away while charging: the charging connector and accessories are not waterproof or dustproof, and Sony says the cap helps maintain the speaker’s water- and dust-protection performance.

Sony recommends the supplied cable or a USB-standard micro-USB cable. Charging from other devices is not guaranteed, and Sony does not say that a higher-current adapter will reduce the stated charge time. Its guide documents wall-adapter and computer charging but does not establish that one method is universally faster. See Sony’s charging instructions for the model-specific details.
How to tell when charging is finished
The CHG indicator is orange while charging and switches off when charging is complete. A slow orange flash means the battery is low and needs charging. If the battery is already full when you connect the cable, the indicator may briefly light and then turn off after about a minute.
If the CHG indicator flashes quickly—three times per second—Sony says an abnormality has been detected. Stop charging immediately. The indicator behavior is described in the SRS-XB12 Help Guide.

Why charging may take longer
The speaker is playing
Charging time varies with battery-use conditions. The speaker can charge while in use, but playback draws power and can extend charging. Turn it off if possible; if you need to play audio while it is connected, lower the volume.

Charge between 5 °C and 35 °C (41 °F and 95 °F). Sony says charging may stop in very hot or cold conditions, or if charging takes too long. If it stops in extreme temperatures, unplug the micro-USB cable and reconnect it once the speaker is within that range.
The speaker has been unused for a long time
Sony notes that a battery left unused for an extended period may take longer to charge. For a speaker in storage, Sony recommends fully charging the battery once every six months.

What to check if it does not charge

Check that the micro-USB cable is connected securely at the speaker’s DC IN 5V jack and at the power source.

If using a wall adapter, confirm it provides at least 500 mA. Try another adapter or, when charging from a computer, another USB port.

Make sure the speaker is within the 5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F) charging range. If charging stopped outside that range, disconnect and reconnect the cable after the speaker returns to a suitable temperature.

If the indicator flashes rapidly, stop charging. If charging still does not work after checking the cable and power source, or the rapid flash continues, contact Sony support.
Does a full charge still give very short playback?
Charging time and playback time are different measures. Sony lists about 16 hours of battery life on its SRS-XB12 specifications page. The Help Guide gives approximately 16 hours at volume level 27 and approximately five hours at maximum volume; actual playback varies with volume, music, temperature, and usage conditions. These are playback figures, not charging times.
If usable playback time is significantly shorter than expected even after a full charge, Sony advises contacting a Sony dealer. A shorter runtime can indicate that the battery has aged.
