Sony Pictures is reportedly negotiating to acquire Electronic Arts’ Battlefield film package, with TheWrap identifying the studio as the frontrunner. A completed Sony deal has not been confirmed. Christopher McQuarrie is reported to be attached as writer, director, and producer, while Michael B. Jordan is attached to produce and may also star; his casting is not confirmed.
What is Sony reportedly negotiating for?
TheWrap reported on October 2, 2026, that Sony Pictures had emerged as the frontrunner to land EA’s Battlefield movie package and was in talks. A Hindustan Times report published October 3, citing PTI and attributing the information to Variety, also described Sony as negotiating after a bidding war; it said Sony declined to comment. Neither report establishes that Sony has acquired the project or completed an agreement.

TheWrap’s earlier report, published April 30, 2026, named five studios that had submitted bids:

Who is attached, and what is confirmed about Jordan’s role?
TheWrap reports that Christopher McQuarrie is set to write, direct, and produce the adaptation. Michael B. Jordan is reported to be attached as a producer, with a possible starring role. PTI says whether Jordan acts depends on several factors, so he should not be described as confirmed to star.
The reporting reviewed includes no direct on-record comment from Sony, McQuarrie, or Jordan about the negotiations. It also does not establish a production start, release date, finalized cast, or film plot.
What is the film based on?
Battlefield is EA’s video-game franchise. The current game, Battlefield 6, launched on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, according to EA’s official game page.

EA describes the game’s setting as 2027: after an assassination, several European countries leave NATO, and the private military company Pax Armata seeks to fill the resulting power vacuum. Its single-player campaign follows Dagger 13 across nine missions, with locations including Brooklyn and Cairo. These are details of the game, not a confirmed synopsis for the movie.
EA identifies Criterion, DICE, Motive, and Ripple Effect as the teams working together as Battlefield Studios. Its July 31, 2025 announcement outlined the game’s setting and multiplayer reveal, while its October 10, 2025 launch announcement described the campaign. Neither announcement confirms story or production details for the film.

The immediate open question is whether Sony and EA reach an agreement. Until a deal is announced or confirmed, Sony’s involvement should be described as reported negotiations rather than a completed acquisition.
