Sony raised U.S. recommended prices for all three PS5 console models by $50 in August 2025, citing a “challenging economic environment.” Tariff uncertainty was part of the cost and supply-chain context reported at the time, but Sony did not identify tariffs as the sole cause. The August prices are no longer current: Sony’s later increase took effect April 2, 2026, setting U.S. recommended prices at $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro.
What changed in Sony’s August 2025 U.S. price increase?
Sony announced a $50 increase for each of its three PS5 console models sold in the U.S., effective August 21, 2025. The change applied to the recommended retail prices for the consoles. It did not raise the prices of games or accessories in that round, according to the Associated Press.
| Console | Before Aug. 21, 2025 | From Aug. 21, 2025 | From Apr. 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $499.99 | $549.99 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $449.99 | $499.99 | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $699.99 | $749.99 | $899.99 |
The August 2025 prices and $50 increase were reported by CBS News and the Associated Press. The later prices and April 2, 2026 effective date are from Sony’s March 27, 2026 notice. These are recommended prices; what a retailer charges or has in stock may differ.
Why did Sony raise PS5 prices in the U.S.?
Sony’s public explanation in August 2025 was that it was navigating “a challenging economic environment.” Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, wrote that the company had made the “difficult decision” to increase U.S. recommended retail prices starting August 21.

Tariffs were a prominent part of contemporaneous coverage, but they were not the specific explanation Sony gave. Reuters reported the increase amid U.S. tariff uncertainty and concerns about supply-chain disruption and material costs. The Associated Press reported that Sony was diversifying its supply chain to lessen tariff impacts. WIRED cited analyst Daniel Ahmad’s view that U.S. stockpiles and manufacturing diversification were among Sony’s steps to mitigate tariff effects. Those are reported context and analysis, not a statement from Sony that tariffs alone caused the increase.
What is the PS5 price now?
Sony’s latest U.S. recommended prices in the sources cited here are the ones effective April 2, 2026: $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony announced that later global price change on March 27, 2026, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The August 2025 prices in the table are historical, not current official U.S. recommended prices.

When comparing offers, match the model and the date: a disc-capable PS5, Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro have different recommended prices. Retail transaction prices and availability can vary, so an advertised retailer price should not be mistaken for Sony’s recommended price.

Did Sony also raise prices for PS5 games or accessories in August 2025?
No. The Associated Press reported that the August 2025 U.S. increase covered consoles and left games and accessories unchanged in that round. That does not establish that every game or accessory will always remain at the same price; it describes the scope of that specific change.
