Sony has patented a way for spectators’ spoken reactions to steer an AI player’s gameplay. US Patent 12,539,468 B2, granted February 3, 2026, describes a system that streams an AI player’s game, listens to what viewers say, sorts those remarks into positive and negative feedback, and shifts the player’s future actions toward the moves that drew approval. It is a patent on a method. It does not show that Sony has built, scheduled, or released the feature, and it does not describe viewers controlling a human streamer.
What the patent describes
The patent is titled “AI streamer with feedback to AI streamer based on spectators.” Its central idea is a loop in which the audience’s voice becomes training input for the player that is performing in front of them. The independent method claim, claim 1, covers the following steps:
- Run a video-game session in which an AI player performs gameplay.
- Stream that AI gameplay over a network to spectator devices.
- Receive audio captured by a spectator device, corresponding to spectator speech.
- Identify positive feedback and negative feedback from the audio, and associate each with gameplay actions.
- Adjust one or more machine-learning model parameters of the AI player.
- Control later AI gameplay so that actions associated with positive feedback increase and actions associated with negative feedback decrease.
The claim’s operative language is that the system performs “identifying positive feedback and negative feedback based on the audio data” (claim 1, US 12,539,468 B2). The mechanism is therefore speech-based classification, linked to specific in-game actions, and used to change how a model behaves over time.

The application and grant share the same inventor and assignee, but they are different legal documents with different scope. The application was published first; the grant is the version that defines what the patent protects.

A granted patent describes legal rights. It is not a product roadmap. The reviewed material contains no implementation timeline, no list of supported games, no named platform, and no launch date.
How it differs from viewer control
The phrase “Sony wants viewers to guide streamers” is a fair headline shorthand, but it is easy to read more into it than the claim supports. The patent’s arrangement is narrower than direct audience control:

- The guided party is an AI player performing gameplay, not a human streamer.
- The input is spectator speech captured as audio, not a chat command, a vote, or a direct controller input. The claim does not require those mechanisms.
- Viewer remarks change model parameters and the AI player’s later choices. Viewers do not take over the game in real time as described in the claim.
- Only the actions tied to positive or negative feedback are reinforced or reduced. How the system weights individual remarks, or how many viewers it needs, is not specified in the claim.
A plain reading is that spectator speech acts as a reward signal for an AI performer, which is closer to how a game-playing agent is trained than to how a streamer takes requests from an audience.

Background: what studies say about viewer behavior
Two earlier academic papers are often cited when discussing stream audiences. They concern viewer engagement and participation, not Sony’s system, and their numbers describe the specific datasets they used.

Predicting engagement from gameplay events (2020)
David Melhart, Daniele Gravina, and Georgios N. Yannakakis studied viewer engagement in PUBG streams, combining gameplay events with the frequency of Twitch chat messages. Their data covered five streamers and several hundred matches, with more than 100,000 game events. Models using 40 gameplay features reached up to 80% average accuracy and 84% at best. Those figures come from that study’s data and conditions and should not be read as a general accuracy for live streams.
Audience participation patterns on Twitch (2020)
Claudia Flores-Saviaga and coauthors analyzed one month of data from 130 Twitch streams, covering 12,150,866 audience chat messages and 2,700 minutes of video. They identified five channel clusters with different audience participation patterns. The collection period was 2017, so these are historical sample details rather than current Twitch-wide statistics.

Sony’s related streaming filing
Sony’s EP4152754A1 publication, “Content transmission system and method,” was published March 22, 2023. It describes streamed content that may include game video and audio, a user or commentator view and audio, branding, and chat functions. It is useful context for Sony’s interest in streaming technology, but it is a separate disclosure and does not describe the AI feedback mechanism in US 12,539,468 B2.

- Whether the approach has been tested outside the patent filing. No named Sony representative has been quoted on the feature.
Readers who want to check the claim language should read the granted patent directly under US 12,539,468 B2, rather than relying on secondhand summaries of its scope.

A note on hardware
The patent refers to spectator devices with recording capability and speech audio. It does not specify or require a dedicated microphone. A USB microphone for gaming is one example of the kind of audio input a spectator device could use, but nothing in the patent names a product or endorses one.
