Sony lists four-layer, 128GB BD-R BDXL discs rated for 4x recording. They are write-once discs, and the BD-R XL label does not mean they will work in every Blu-ray recorder or player: check your exact model and whether it supports recording, playback, or both.
What Sony’s 128GB BDXL media includes
Sony’s Japanese product listing describes the BNR4VAPJ4 product family as four-layer BD-R BDXL media with 128GB capacity and a 4x recording speed. BD-R is write-once: you can record to the disc, but it is not rewritable. Sony also lists a hard coating and support for wide-area inkjet printing.
The listed package sizes are one, three, five, ten, and twenty-five discs, under SKU variants BNR4VAPJ4, 3BNR4VAPS4, 5BNR4VAPS4, 10BNR4VAPS4, and 25BNR4VAPP4. Sony says sales through Sony Store have ended; that statement does not establish whether other retailers have stock. Sony’s product listing

BDXL is an expanded, multi-layer recordable Blu-ray format. The Blu-ray Disc Association’s 2010 announcement described write-once 100GB and 128GB options, alongside rewritable 100GB media. Sony’s listed 128GB disc is specifically BD-R, not rewritable BD-RE. Blu-ray Disc Association’s BDXL announcement BDA specification announcement
#1 Best Overall
- 100GB TRIPLE-LAYER CAPACITY: Each BDXL disc provides up to 100GB of storage for large video, photo, audio, backup, and data files.
- UP TO 4X WRITE SPEED: Supports recording speeds up to 4X with compatible BDXL burners and playback on compatible BDXL devices.
- WHITE INKJET PRINTABLE SURFACE: Create customized labels with text, graphics, and images using a compatible inkjet disc printer.
- EDGE-TO-EDGE HUB PRINTING: Wide printable surface extends to the hub, providing additional space for custom artwork, branding, and labeling.
- HARDCOAT PROTECTION: Protective coating helps guard against scratches and prolong disc life. Includes 10 discs and a Verbatim Limited Lifetime Warranty.
In that 2010 announcement, the Association said BDXL was aimed primarily at commercial users with archiving needs, including broadcasting, medical imaging, and document imaging. That describes the intended market; it is not a guarantee that a disc will preserve data for a particular length of time.
How capacity and layers compare
| Format | Capacity | Layers | Recording behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional BD | 25GB or 50GB | One or two | Depends on the disc type |
| BDXL | 100GB | Three | BD-R write-once or BD-RE rewritable, as described by the BDA |
| BDXL | 128GB | Four | BD-R write-once; Sony’s listed disc |
Sony’s support page identifies 100GB BD-R XL as three-layer and 128GB BD-R XL as four-layer. The BDA said BDXL-capable recorders could be designed to play existing 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray formats. That design intention does not mean older Blu-ray equipment accepts BDXL discs. Sony’s BD-R XL support guidance BDA specification announcement

- 25-PACK SPINDLE: Includes 25 M DISC BDXL discs in a convenient spindle and a Verbatim 10-Year Limited Warranty.
Does your Blu-ray player or recorder support 128GB BDXL?
Not necessarily. Sony warns that some Blu-ray recorders and players do not support recording or playback of BD-R XL discs and advises checking the specific device. A generic Blu-ray or BD-R marking is not enough to establish compatibility. Sony’s BD-R XL support guidance
- Find the exact model number. Use the model’s manual or manufacturer specifications, not only the product name or a general Blu-ray logo.
- Look for explicit XL support. Check for BD-R XL or BDXL support, and confirm that it covers four-layer 128GB media if the specifications distinguish capacities.
- Check the operation you need. Recording and playback are separate capabilities. Confirm support for the relevant operation on that model.
- For video playback, check disc authoring requirements. Sony USA says its general compatibility table lists BD-R XL / BD-RE XL playback for 2011 models onward, but directs users to their particular product documentation. It also notes that copying a movie file to a disc alone does not create a playable video disc: the disc needs an appropriate DMV, BDAV, or BDMV format, and file support varies by model. Sony USA playback guidance
- Verify the media listing before buying. Confirm that it says BD-R rather than BD-RE, and check layer count, capacity, and speed against your device’s supported-media list.
Where to find Sony 128GB BDXL discs
Sony’s product page identifies the listed package sizes and says Sony Store sales have ended. It does not report current prices or establish availability from independent sellers. If considering another listing, compare its stated format, layer count, capacity, and speed with your recorder’s documented support rather than relying on “Blu-ray” alone. Sony’s product listing
