The Sony KD-65X85K is a 65-inch-class 4K Google TV with a native 120Hz panel, 4K/120 support, and HDMI 2.1 gaming features. Independent testing finds it handles SDR content and reflections well, with strong native contrast and responsive gaming. Its biggest compromises are the lack of local dimming and narrow viewing angles: it suits a gamer or centrally seated viewer better than a wide group seeking brighter, more controlled HDR highlights.
What the Sony KD-65X85K offers
Sony identifies the KD-65X85K as part of its 2022 X85K series. It is a 65-inch-class television, with a 64.5-inch diagonal measurement, running Google TV and Sony’s 4K HDR Processor X1. Sony’s specifications list a native 120Hz panel, four HDMI inputs, eARC/ARC, and support for HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision.
For mounting, Sony lists a 300 × 300 mm VESA hole pattern. Check that pattern, the mount’s load rating, and the mount’s fit before buying.

Picture quality: strong contrast, but limited HDR control
RTINGS reports high native contrast and good black uniformity. That can help dark scenes look solid, but the X85K has no local dimming. The screen therefore cannot adjust separate areas of its backlight to intensify bright highlights while keeping neighboring dark areas dark. If vivid HDR highlights are a priority, consider a TV with local dimming instead.
For everyday viewing, RTINGS finds good SDR brightness, good reflection handling, and no issues upscaling lower-resolution content. Those strengths make the X85K a reasonable option for bright-room TV and sports, though they do not remove its HDR limitations.
RTINGS also reports narrow viewing angles. Picture quality falls off for people seated far to the side, so measure the main seating positions against the screen before choosing it for a wide room.

Gaming: 4K/120 and variable refresh rate
Sony specifies 4K/120, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) over HDMI 2.1. Its specifications identify HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 as the inputs for VRR and ALLM. RTINGS reports low input lag, quick response, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, and support for HDMI Forum VRR and G-SYNC; it does not report FreeSync support. RTINGS also says Dolby Vision is limited to 4K at 60Hz.
To use the TV’s 4K/120 gaming features, connect a compatible console or PC to HDMI 3 or 4 and use a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Check the source device’s output settings as well; the TV’s capabilities alone do not make every game or device run at 4K/120.

Should you buy the Sony KD-65X85K?
The X85K is most compelling when 4K/120 gaming, responsive controls, SDR brightness, and reflection handling matter more than top-tier HDR or off-angle viewing. Compare it with other TVs on the features that will affect your room and use:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Gaming: Confirm support for 4K/120 and the VRR format your console or PC uses.
- HDR: Look for local dimming and review brightness performance if dramatic HDR highlights matter to you.
- Seating: Consider a wider-viewing display if people regularly watch from far to the side.
- Room conditions: Compare reflection handling and SDR brightness for a bright room.
- Value: Check the TV’s current price, condition, seller, and warranty against alternatives.
RTINGS says the X85K is largely unchanged from the X85J and suggests considering the X85J if it is available for less. It rates the X90L better in local dimming, brightness, and some picture-quality areas. Those are review-publisher comparisons, not guarantees about current prices or value.
RTINGS labels its results as based on an older test bench and cautions that some scores are not directly comparable with TVs evaluated under its newer methodology. Its review page says its most recent retest was September 26, 2025, covering brightness measurements and uniformity photos. Sony’s product page displays $999.99, but Sony warns that pricing and promotions may no longer apply; treat that as a page snapshot, not a dependable current market price.
