The Sony KD-65X80L is a reasonable general-purpose 65-inch 4K television for streaming, broadcast and everyday viewing in a moderately lit room. It is a weaker choice for dark-room cinema viewing, for 120 Hz gaming, or for anyone who expects strong HDR punch. The main trade-offs are its gray-looking blacks, modest peak brightness and 60 Hz refresh ceiling, each explained below. Whether it is good value depends on a local price, which this article could not confirm.
What the KD-65X80L is
The KD-65X80L is a 2023 model in Sony’s X80L line. Sony’s UK product listing describes a 65-inch 4K LCD panel with direct LED backlighting and frame dimming, running Google TV. Reviews of the 65-inch set also refer to it as the Bravia X80L, so you will see both names. Confirm the full model code on the box or the product page before you buy, because suffixes and included accessories differ by country.

Brightness and HDR headroom
The KD-65X80L supports HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, so it will accept HDR content from most streaming services and players. Format support is not the same as HDR impact. Computer Bild’s peak-brightness reading (see the table in the test-results section) is modest for a high-dynamic-range picture. Bright highlights such as sunlit skies or specular reflections will have less punch than on brighter premium sets. In a living room with large windows, expect to close blinds in the afternoon for the best HDR results.

Contrast and dark-room viewing
The measured contrast ratio is good for an LCD in this price bracket, but it is not an OLED-style black. Computer Bild’s reviewer found that the black areas of the screen look gray rather than deep in a dark room. Direct LED backlighting with frame dimming helps control light across the panel, but the test does not quantify how much that improves dark scenes. If you watch films in a darkened room, the gray blacks are the most likely disappointment.
Colour and viewing angles
Computer Bild reports natural colours and good colour stability when viewed from off-center seats. That suits family rooms where people sit at the sides of the sofa or in different positions, rather than one fixed viewing spot.
Independent test results
Computer Bild, a German consumer-technology magazine, published its review of the 65-inch set on 28 February 2025. It awarded a 2.1 grade (“good”) on its scale. The figures below are measurements from that one test sample, not guarantees for every unit.
| Measurement | Reading | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum brightness | 367 cd/m² | Computer Bild test, 2025 |
| Measured contrast | 4,113:1 | Computer Bild test, 2025 |
| DCI-P3 colour coverage | 90.9% | Computer Bild test, 2025 |
| Input lag | 13 ms | At 60 Hz in Game mode, Computer Bild test, 2025 |
| Review grade | 2.1 (“good”) | Computer Bild grading scale, 2025 |
The reviewer also wrote, in German, “Der Bravia X80L zählt zu den günstigsten Sony-Fernsehern.” In English, that means the Bravia X80L is among Sony’s least expensive televisions. That is a statement about Sony’s lineup, not about the current selling price.

Gaming and PS5 compatibility
Refresh rate: no 120 Hz
The KD-65X80L has a native refresh rate of 50/60 Hz, and Computer Bild reports a 60 Hz ceiling. It does not support 120 Hz, so 120 fps console modes will not display at their full frame rate. Sony’s UK listing does not mention variable refresh rate either, so do not expect VRR.
Input lag and auto low latency mode
The 13 ms input-lag reading applies only at 60 Hz in Game mode. The set supports ALLM (auto low latency mode) on HDMI 3 and 4. ALLM lets a console or PC signal game content so the TV switches to a low-latency picture mode automatically, which is why the HDMI port you choose matters.
Is it good for PS5?
For most console play at 4K and 60 fps with HDR, the set is a sensible match. Competitive players who need 120 Hz output should look at other televisions.

- Select the picture mode labelled Game on the TV, since the measured input lag was taken in that mode.
- In the console’s video output settings, choose 4K output and HDR to match the TV’s supported formats.
- Expect 60 Hz as the maximum refresh rate, with no VRR.
Smart TV, streaming and connections
The set runs Google TV and includes Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Its connections are four HDMI inputs, eARC/ARC for a soundbar, and two USB ports. Wi-Fi is listed as 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac.

Software updates
Sony UK’s support page lists firmware v6.8224 with a release date of 29 July 2026. Firmware is region-specific and changes over time, so check your country’s Sony support page before you set up the TV.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sound and soundbar pairing
Computer Bild found the built-in sound reasonably balanced but restrained in bass. A soundbar connected through eARC/ARC is the simplest upgrade for more low-frequency impact. Confirm that the soundbar supports eARC and that you use the HDMI port the TV designates for it. Not every soundbar or connection setup behaves the same.
Size, mounting and installation
The 65-inch screen is large, so measure the space before ordering.
- Mount: the VESA pattern is 300 x 300 mm. Use a bracket rated for the set’s weight of 21.7 kg without stand.
- Wall: check the wall material and fixings before drilling. A mount is only as safe as the wall it is fixed to.
- Stand: the set measures about 145.2 cm wide, 83.6 cm high and 7.2 cm deep without its stand. Confirm that your furniture can take that width, and check the stand’s footprint in the product documentation.
Price and value
This article did not establish a current local price, stock position, warranty terms or return window, so it cannot say whether the set is a bargain. Compare the local listing against other 65-inch LCD televisions on the points that matter most here: refresh rate and VRR, dark-room picture, HDR brightness, off-axis viewing, and smart features. Verify the seller, model code and warranty before buying.
Who the KD-65X80L suits
- Good fit: a family living room with moderate lighting, mostly streaming and broadcast viewing, Google TV or AirPlay users, and console players who are content with 60 Hz.
- Weaker fit: dark-room film viewing, 120 Hz or VRR gaming, bright HDR content in a sunlit room, and buyers who need a confirmed local price before committing.
Sony’s capabilities are described on Sony UK’s product listing. The measurements and grade are Computer Bild’s results from its 2025 test, and they describe that one sample.
