The Sony KD-65X77L is a 65-inch-class 2023 4K LED television with Google TV, useful streaming features and a native 60 Hz panel. It can suit everyday TV, shows and sports, but its lack of VRR and RTINGS’ findings on dark-scene contrast and HDR make it a weaker choice for demanding gaming or dark-room movie viewing. Whether it is worth buying depends on its current price against comparable 65-inch TVs.
What is the Sony KD-65X77L?
The KD-65X77L is Sony’s 65-inch-class X77L television, a 2023 model with a 4K LCD panel and Direct LED backlight. Sony lists its diagonal screen measurement as 64.5 inches and its resolution as 3840 × 2160. The panel’s native refresh rate is 60 Hz—not 240 Hz. Sony’s Motionflow XR 240 branding refers to motion processing, not the panel’s native refresh rate. Sony’s US specifications are the reference for these model details; regional variants may differ.
Picture quality: what to expect
Everyday TV, shows and sports
The 4K Processor X1 and 4K X-Reality Pro are intended to process and upscale picture content. Sony says, “Even your favorites in 2K and HD are upscaled close to 4K quality thanks to 4K X-Reality PRO,” while noting that results vary with source content. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement. Sony’s product page describes the feature.
RTINGS characterizes the set as decent for shows and sports during the day and for wide seating, but says it is not well suited to bright rooms. That assessment does not establish a universal result for every room: window direction, glare and viewing habits matter.

Movies and HDR
Sony lists HDR10 and HLG support. Format compatibility does not guarantee a strong HDR effect: RTINGS reports low peak brightness, low contrast, no local dimming and limited color gamut, and describes dark-room movie performance as weak, with washed-out blacks. In practice, those limitations can make bright highlights and dark scenes less convincing than on TVs with stronger contrast and HDR output. Is the Sony X77L good for PS5 and gaming?
It can handle standard 60 Hz console gaming, and RTINGS reports low input lag in Game mode. But the native 60 Hz panel sets a ceiling for high-frame-rate play, and Sony does not list VRR support. The TV therefore lacks features that matter to players seeking smoother motion at higher frame rates or variable-refresh-rate support.

Sony lists ALLM on HDMI 3 only. That port is also the eARC/ARC connection, so a console and an eARC soundbar or receiver may compete for the same HDMI input if you want both connections. This is a port-allocation consideration based on Sony’s connection specifications, not a tested setup. You can also select Game picture mode manually when appropriate. Sony lists three HDMI inputs overall.
Smart TV and connections
The X77L runs Google TV and supports Google Play Store, Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Sony says some functions—including voice control for linked apps and installation of certain apps—require a Google account. It lists 16 GB of onboard storage, Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, Bluetooth 5.0, Ethernet and two USB ports.

For audio equipment, the TV has eARC/ARC and two full-range bass-reflex speakers. Sony specifies speaker output of 10 W + 10 W and lists Dolby Audio. A separate sound system is optional; the built-in speakers may be sufficient depending on room size and listening preference.

Dimensions, mounting and box contents
Without the stand, Sony lists dimensions of 57 5/8 × 33 1/4 × 2 7/8 inches; with the stand, it lists 57.63 × 36 × 13.25 inches. Check the dimensions that apply to your installation, including space for cables and any stand footprint. The VESA hole pattern is 300 × 300 mm. Sony names the SU-WL855 as an optional wall-mount bracket, but availability depends on country selection; verify regional fit before purchasing a mount.

Sony lists a table-top stand, voice remote, batteries, power cord, operating instructions and quick setup guide in the box. Contents can vary by region, so check the listing for the unit you intend to buy.
Is the Sony KD-65X77L worth buying?
Consider it if you want a straightforward 65-inch 4K Google TV for streaming, regular TV and casual gaming, and find it at a price that compares favorably with current alternatives. Look elsewhere if your priorities are strong HDR, deep blacks for a dark room, high-refresh-rate gaming or VRR. For a fair comparison, check same-size TVs for current price, refresh rate and gaming inputs, local dimming and contrast, HDR brightness and color, smart-TV platform, and installation dimensions.
A current cross-retailer price and inventory have not been established here, so there is no reliable value verdict independent of the price you can actually buy it for. Sony’s US pages and the cited RTINGS review provide the product and performance context; availability and specifications may vary by region.
