The Sony KD-55X77L is a 2023 entry-level 55-inch-class 4K Google TV best suited to everyday streaming, television and casual gaming—not dark-room HDR or high-refresh console play. Its useful casting options and responsive basic gaming are balanced by weak contrast, low HDR impact and a native 60 Hz panel. RTINGS’ review of the 65-inch version also applies to the 55-inch model, according to the reviewer.
What the Sony KD-55X77L is—and who it suits
Sony’s US specifications identify the KD-55X77L as a 2023 model with a 54.6-inch measured LCD panel (55-inch class), 3840 × 2160 resolution, direct LED backlighting and a native 60 Hz refresh rate. It runs Google TV. These are manufacturer specifications, not performance-test results. Sony’s official specifications list HDR10 and HLG support.
It is a reasonable candidate if you want a straightforward smart TV for shows, sports and streaming in a moderately lit room, and its current local price is attractive. It is a weaker fit if your priorities are deep blacks, vivid HDR highlights, a very bright viewing room, 4K gaming above 60 Hz or variable refresh rate (VRR).

Everyday viewing and seating angles
RTINGS describes the set as adequate for shows and sports in a moderately lit room. It also reports that the picture remains consistent when viewed from an angle, which can help when several people watch from different seats. The trade-off is that viewing-angle consistency does not make the black level strong.

Sony advertises a 4K Processor X1 and 4K X-Reality Pro. Its product page describes the processor as delivering “lifelike picture quality full of rich colors and detailed contrast”; that is Sony’s marketing description, not an independent test result. RTINGS reports that the TV does a poor job smoothing low-quality source material, so heavily compressed or low-resolution video may look less polished. Sony’s product page and RTINGS’ review provide the respective claims.
Dark scenes and HDR
RTINGS identifies low contrast and the absence of local dimming as important weaknesses. In a dark room, that limits the depth of dark scenes compared with TVs that can produce stronger blacks or control backlighting in separate screen zones.
Although the KD-55X77L accepts HDR10 and HLG signals, RTINGS says its low peak brightness and lack of a wide color gamut limit the visible HDR effect. Format support alone does not guarantee impactful HDR: the set may display HDR content without delivering the brightness and color range that make highlights and saturated colors stand out. Consumer Reports’ search-result excerpt also flags limited peak brightness as a constraint on HDR benefit, but does not establish detailed measurements. Consumer Reports’ listing.

Can the KD-55X77L handle PS5 gaming?
Yes, for basic gaming at up to 60 Hz. RTINGS reports low input lag in Game picture mode, which can make casual play feel responsive. The important distinction is that responsiveness is not the same as support for high-refresh or variable-refresh gaming: Sony specifies a native 60 Hz panel, and RTINGS reports no VRR.
Refresh rate, VRR and ALLM
Sony lists ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) on HDMI 3; RTINGS likewise says ALLM is available on only one port. Sony’s Motionflow XR 240 branding should not be mistaken for a native 240 Hz panel: the official specification gives the native refresh rate as 60 Hz. Buyers seeking 4K/120 Hz or VRR from a newer console should choose a television whose specifications explicitly support those features.
PS5 picture features
Sony advertises PS5 Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. These features automate picture adjustments; they do not add 120 Hz or VRR support. Sony says the PS5 must connect directly to the TV for these features to work, and Auto HDR Tone Mapping must be enabled during initial pairing and setup. Sony’s product page.
Google TV, casting and connections
The television includes Google TV, Google Play Store access and voice search. Sony lists Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit, so it supports casting and smart-home options across both Google and Apple ecosystems. Sony says voice control requires a Google account. App availability, service terms and software can vary by region and change over time.

Sony specifies three side-mounted HDMI inputs, two side-mounted USB ports, and eARC/ARC support. It lists ALLM on HDMI 3; the official specification does not list VRR. Check the port labels and your connected equipment’s requirements when planning a console, streaming device or soundbar setup. The complete connection and wireless details are in Sony’s specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mounting and sound
Sony specifies a 300 × 300 mm VESA mounting pattern and a weight of 33.8 lb (15.3 kg) without the stand. When choosing a wall mount, check that it supports both the VESA pattern and the television’s weight, and confirm that it is suitable for your wall type.
The built-in speakers are rated at 10 W + 10 W in Sony’s specifications. If you want more substantial audio, a compatible soundbar can connect through HDMI eARC/ARC; confirm the soundbar and cable support the audio features you plan to use.
What should you compare before buying?
No current price or specific competing model is established here, so judge the KD-55X77L against the televisions actually available in your region rather than relying on an old price. For each alternative, compare native refresh rate and VRR/ALLM, contrast and local dimming, HDR brightness and color gamut, viewing-angle behavior, smart-TV and casting features, HDMI count and eARC/ARC, plus current price and warranty.

How RTINGS’ review applies to the 55-inch model
RTINGS says it bought and tested the 65-inch version and considers its results applicable to the 43-, 55-, 75- and 85-inch sizes. It says panel details for the 50-inch model are uncertain. The performance discussion above uses RTINGS’ findings with that stated scope; it does not claim that the author tested the KD-55X77L directly. RTINGS’ model review.
