The Sony K-65S30 is a sensible buy for streaming, everyday TV and casual console play at 60fps, provided you do not need a 120Hz panel, variable refresh rate or a deep, dark picture. It is a 65-inch 4K HDR LED Google TV with Dolby Vision and Sony picture processing, but it has a native 60Hz panel, no VRR, no local dimming, and, according to one detailed 2026 review, weak shadow detail in dark scenes. Those trade-offs define who should buy it and who should look elsewhere.

Sony’s listing for this model is K-65S30. Some review coverage and search results use the longer label “Sony Bravia 3 65-inch (K65S35BP).” Before you buy, check that the suffix on the box or retailer listing matches the model you are reading about, because regional model codes can differ.

What the K-65S30 is and what it supports

The K-65S30 belongs to Sony’s 2024 BRAVIA 3 line. Sony describes it as a 65-inch-class LED 4K HDR Google TV. The table below lists the specifications Sony publishes for this model. Anything beyond these sits in the reviewer observations covered later.

Feature Sony K-65S30 (as published by Sony)
Screen size 65-inch class
Resolution 3840 × 2160 (4K)
Panel type and backlight Direct LED, no local dimming (per What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 review)
Native refresh rate 60Hz (Sony’s support page)
HDR formats Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG
Processor 4K HDR Processor X1; Motionflow XR 240 (marketing name for motion processing, not a 240Hz panel)
HDMI inputs 4, each supporting up to 4K 60p; ALLM on all four (per What Hi-Fi?)
eARC/ARC Yes, on one HDMI port (per What Hi-Fi?)
USB ports 2
Smart platform Google TV
Audio Two-channel speakers, 20W combined (per What Hi-Fi?); Dolby Audio and Dolby Atmos compatibility

Two points in that table are easy to misread. “Motionflow XR 240” is Sony’s motion-processing branding. The panel is still 60Hz, so the number does not mean 240 refresh cycles per second. Likewise, “Dolby Atmos compatibility” means the TV can pass Atmos-encoded audio to a compatible receiver or soundbar over eARC; it does not mean the built-in speakers produce Atmos.

Gaming: what a 60Hz TV can and cannot do

This is the most important section for console owners. A 60Hz display refreshes 60 times per second, so it suits 60fps games and video content. It cannot show 120fps gameplay at 4K, and it has no VRR, so it cannot sync its refresh to a fluctuating frame rate. Sony does not list either feature for this model.

What helps

  • ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) is supported on all four HDMI inputs, according to What Hi-Fi?. ALLM should switch the TV into a low-lag mode automatically when a console sends the signal.
  • PS5 Auto HDR Tone Mapping is an automatic picture feature Sony advertises for the PS5. Sony’s product FAQ says it must be enabled when you first pair the console.
  • Auto Genre Picture Mode is also named in Sony’s FAQ and can switch picture presets based on content type.

What does not

  • No 4K/120Hz support, so 120fps modes on PS5 or Xbox Series X will not display at full frame rate.
  • No VRR, so games that drop between frame rates can show tearing or judder that a VRR display would smooth out.

For a family console that mostly runs 60fps titles, these limits may never matter. A dedicated competitive gamer, or someone who expects 120Hz, should compare a higher-refresh model instead.

Picture quality and HDR

The picture findings below come from What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 review of the 65-inch model. They are that publication’s test observations, not Sony’s specifications, and they are not a universal result for every room or source.

Default settings versus Professional mode

The reviewer found the out-of-box image punchy but over-smoothed in motion. Switching to Professional picture mode produced a more balanced, natural image and improved motion. If you buy this set, start with Professional mode rather than the default presets.

Dark scenes

The reviewer’s most significant criticism is dark-scene performance. Without local dimming, the set lacks the zone control that helps black levels, and the review reports a grey wash with lost impact and detail in shadowy material. Bright content, daytime sports and well-lit streaming shows are a better match for this TV than dim film nights in a dark room.

HDR formats

Sony lists Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. Dolby Vision content will be read in its own format where the source supports it; HDR10 and HLG are the fallbacks for other sources. Because the panel is direct LED without local dimming, HDR highlights will be limited by what the backlight can do across the whole screen, so the format support improves compatibility more than it improves contrast.

Sound: built-in speakers and the upgrade path

The built-in system is two-channel with 20W combined output, according to What Hi-Fi?. That is adequate for news, dialogue and casual viewing, but it will not fill a larger living room with bass or dynamics. Sony advertises X-Balanced speakers and Dolby Audio support on this model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The useful upgrade path is eARC. Connect a soundbar or receiver to the eARC-capable HDMI port, and Dolby Atmos or other compatible audio can be passed through to that device. Any soundbar you choose should be checked against the TV’s eARC and Atmos support, and the TV’s own speakers will be replaced rather than supplemented unless you configure the device yourself.

Smart platform and connections

Google TV is the interface, which gives access to streaming apps and voice search through the remote. Apps and services can change over time, so check that your specific services are available in your country before buying. The two USB ports are useful for storage or media playback, and the four HDMI inputs cover a console, a streaming box, a soundbar and one spare device. If you run more than four HDMI sources, plan for an HDMI switch.

How it compares with a higher-refresh rival

What Hi-Fi? names the TCL C7K as a competing model with Mini LED, quantum dots and a 144Hz panel. That combination targets buyers who value brighter HDR, a higher refresh rate or better dark-scene performance. Before choosing between them, compare current specifications and street prices directly, since both lines change over time.

Who should buy the K-65S30, and who should not

Good fit

  • Households who mainly stream, watch sport and broadcast TV in bright rooms.
  • Casual console players running 60fps games who want ALLM and automatic PS5 picture settings.
  • Buyers who want Dolby Vision support and a Google TV interface at a 65-inch size.

Poor fit

  • Gamers who need 120Hz output or VRR.
  • Viewers who watch mostly dark films in a dark room and expect deep blacks.
  • Buyers who want powerful built-in sound and do not plan to add a soundbar or receiver.

Setup checklist

  1. Confirm the model code on the box or listing matches K-65S30 for your region.
  2. Connect your console to an HDMI port and make sure ALLM is enabled for that input.
  3. When you first pair a PS5, enable PS5 Auto HDR Tone Mapping as Sony’s FAQ instructs.
  4. Select Professional picture mode, since the reviewer found it more balanced than the default presets.
  5. If you add a soundbar, connect it to the eARC-capable HDMI port and set the TV’s audio output to pass the signal through.
  6. If you plan to wall-mount the TV, check the VESA pattern on your TV and the mount’s rated size, load and wall type before buying hardware.

Setting menu labels can vary by software version, so use the on-screen names as your guide when a step does not match exactly.
