The Sony K-55XR50 is a 55-inch 4K Mini LED LCD TV with local dimming and a native 120 Hz panel. Sony lists Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG support, plus Google TV and four HDMI inputs. Its main setup trade-off is that family-review evidence says only two HDMI ports provide the complete gaming feature set; the independent reviews available cover a 65-inch BRAVIA 5, not this exact 55-inch model. That makes the K-55XR50 most compelling for buyers who want Sony’s Mini LED picture features and can verify that its port layout and current local price suit their setup.

What is the Sony K-55XR50?

The K-55XR50 is Sony’s 2025 55-inch BRAVIA 5, also called XR50. Sony specifies a 54.6-inch measured diagonal LCD panel, 3840 × 2160 resolution, Mini LED backlighting, local dimming and a native 120 Hz refresh rate. The specification does not state a local-dimming-zone count for this size, so figures reported for larger sets should not be treated as the 55-inch model’s specification.

Sony lists its XR Processor and XR Motion Clarity, along with Professional, Cinema, Dolby Vision, FPS game and RTS game picture modes. The mix points to a TV designed for both film and gaming use, but the exact 55-inch model has not been independently measured in the reviews cited here.

How should you interpret the picture-quality evidence?

TechRadar reviewed the 65-inch BRAVIA 5 K65XR55, not the K-55XR50. Its reviewer praised contrast, color, sharpness and local-dimming control, while finding the set less bright and equipped with fewer dimming zones than the step-up BRAVIA 7. These are observations about the larger family model, not test results for the 55-inch TV. TechRadar’s BRAVIA 5 review

That reviewer measured nearly 900 nits peak brightness on a 10% HDR window and 595 nits on a full 100% HDR window on the 65-inch unit. What Hi-Fi? counted roughly 240 local-dimming zones on its own 65-inch K65XR55 review unit; Sony does not publish that count as a specification for the K-55XR50. Neither figure should be used as a measurement of the 55-inch model. What Hi-Fi?’s K65XR55 review

Sony lists HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision compatibility. When comparing alternatives, look beyond format support: check independent measurements for the screen size you intend to buy, local-dimming behavior, reflections and viewing angles. A Mini LED LCD and an OLED use different panel technologies, so compare them in the context of your room and viewing habits rather than assuming one specification settles the choice.

Does the K-55XR50 have enough HDMI ports for gaming?

Sony lists four HDMI inputs and the HDMI 2.1 features 4K120, VRR, ALLM, eARC and SBTM. Sony also lists PS5 Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. However, TechRadar’s review of the 65-inch BRAVIA 5 says only two of the four HDMI ports provide the full gaming feature set. That is family-review evidence, not a verified port-by-port test of the K-55XR50, so check the exact model’s manual and port labels before planning your connections. If you connect a console, gaming PC, receiver or soundbar, map those devices to the ports that support the features each one needs. The 65-inch TechRadar review reports 4K/120Hz and VRR support but no AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync on its test unit; verify compatibility for your exact device and model rather than treating that review as a K-55XR50 test.

What are the smart-TV and sound features?

Smart TV and casting

Sony lists Google TV, built-in Chromecast, Apple AirPlay, Apple HomeKit and Bluetooth 5.3. These features cover common streaming, casting and connected-home uses; app availability and service support can vary by region.

Built-in audio

The official specification lists two full-range bass-reflex speakers and two tweeters, with output rated at 10 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W. Supported formats include Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and Acoustic Center Sync can pair the TV with a compatible Sony soundbar.

TechRadar described the sound from its 65-inch review unit as clean and detailed but relatively light in bass. That makes a soundbar worth considering if bass matters to you, but it does not establish that every K-55XR50 buyer will need one. Listen to the TV in your room if possible and decide whether its built-in sound meets your needs.

How should you judge the price and alternatives?

TechRadar reported 55-inch launch pricing of $1,399.99 in the US, £1,299 in the UK and AU$1,999 in Australia, with a July 2025 release. Those are historical launch prices, not current offers. Current price, stock and local promotions have not been established here, so compare the K-55XR50 against same-size TVs using prices available where you live. TechRadar’s BRAVIA 5 review

For a fair comparison, weigh these points on the actual 55-inch models and current local listings:

  • LCD Mini LED versus OLED panel type, and independent brightness and reflection measurements.
  • Local-dimming performance and HDR format support.
  • How many HDMI ports support the gaming features your devices require, plus 4K refresh-rate support.
  • Viewing angles and room layout, especially if viewers sit far off-center.
  • Built-in audio quality and whether you would add a soundbar.

TechRadar’s family-level discussion includes the TCL C7K, LG C5 and Samsung QN90F, but its cited comparison concerns 65-inch products. Do not treat that as a direct 55-inch price or performance comparison; check the corresponding sizes and specifications before deciding.
