To reset a Sony HX400V, press MENU, open Image (Setup), choose Setting Reset, then select either Camera Settings Reset or Initialize. Sony says recorded images are retained after Setting Reset. Keep the battery pack in place until the reset finishes.
Choose the reset level you need
The HX400V offers two reset choices in the Setting Reset menu. Select the one that matches what you want to restore:
- Camera Settings Reset: returns the main shooting settings to their defaults.
- Initialize: returns all settings to their defaults. Sony’s general reset guidance warns that downloaded applications may be uninstalled, so review your setup afterward.
Sony’s HX400/HX400V Help Guide says recorded images are retained after Setting Reset. The reset is intended to restore settings, not erase recorded photos.
Reset the Sony HX400V from its menu
- Turn on the camera and press MENU.
- Open Image (Setup), then select Setting Reset.
- Choose Camera Settings Reset for the main shooting settings, or Initialize for all settings.
- Allow the reset to finish. Do not eject the battery pack while it is in progress.
The menu path and reset options are documented in Sony’s HX400/HX400V Setting Reset guide.

If the camera is malfunctioning
If you are resetting because the camera is not working properly, Sony recommends trying a battery removal and restart before initializing the settings:
- Remove the battery pack.
- Wait about one minute, then reinsert the battery pack.
- Turn on the camera. If the problem remains, initialize the settings using the menu steps above.
If the issue continues after initialization, Sony advises contacting a dealer or authorized service facility. See the HX400/HX400V troubleshooting guide for model-specific guidance.

When a reset may not clear an error code
If the camera displays a self-diagnosis code beginning with C: or E:, a reset may not resolve it. Check the HX400V troubleshooting instructions or contact Sony support for the DSC-HX400V rather than assuming initialization will fix the fault. Sony’s general guidance on resetting or initializing a camera also notes that a reset may not resolve a displayed C: or E: code.
