Announced on 1 March 2005, the Sony Ericsson W800 put a digital music player, phone and 2-megapixel camera in one handset. Sony Ericsson and Sony described it as the first Walkman-branded mobile phone. Its significance is best understood as an early example of bringing the Walkman identity and local music playback into a phone—not as proof that it outperformed every rival or dedicated music player.
What made the W800 the first Walkman phone?
Sony Ericsson announced the W800 on 1 March 2005 as its first Walkman-branded mobile phone. Sony’s 2005 annual report also calls it the first Walkman-branded phone. That wording matters: it identifies the first handset carrying the Walkman brand, rather than claiming the W800 was the first phone ever able to play music. The launch announcement presented the W800 as three devices in one: a mobile phone, a digital music player and a camera with a 2-megapixel sensor. Sony Ericsson’s senior vice president for product and application planning, Rikko Sakaguchi, said: “Vi har noga undersökt vad användarna önskar av en mobil digital musikspelare och sedan har vi tagit fram en produkt därefter.” In English: “We have carefully investigated what users want from a mobile digital music player, and then developed a product accordingly.” The English is a translation of his Swedish statement.
How did the W800 work as a music player?
The W800 was designed around locally stored music transferred from a computer, rather than a streaming service. Sony Ericsson’s W800i English user guide describes using Disc2Phone to transfer music from CDs or a computer to a Memory Stick Duo card. Contemporary ITmedia coverage reports support for MP3 and AAC files.

ITmedia’s 2 March 2005 launch report says the phone shipped with a 0.5 GB card, estimated to hold about 150 songs. That is a period estimate, not a fixed capacity: the number of tracks depends on their length and encoding. Sony Ericsson’s launch announcement said storage could be expanded with a Memory Stick card up to 2 GB.
Sony Ericsson claimed up to 30 hours of music playback when the phone function was switched off. Contemporary reporting also gave a launch-era estimate of about 15 hours with the phone function on. These are manufacturer and period figures, not predictions for a W800 with an aged battery. Actual runtime on a surviving phone depends on battery condition and use.

Why did the combination matter?
The W800’s historical appeal is the integration: music playback joined phone service and camera functions in a single device, with removable storage and a computer-to-phone transfer path. That offered an alternative to carrying a separate music player, while retaining the core functions of a handset.

The W800 raised expectations in the sense that it made music a defining part of a branded mobile-phone product, not in the sense of a measured, market-wide victory.

What should collectors check before buying storage?
Memory Stick Duo is the relevant storage family for the W800’s music workflow. Sony Ericsson’s launch announcement specifies expansion up to 2 GB, and the user guide identifies Memory Stick Duo storage. A Memory Stick PRO Duo card may be a listing to investigate, but do not assume a particular card is compatible based on its name alone.
- Check the exact card format and capacity against the W800 variant and the seller’s listing details.
- Confirm the card’s condition and whether it is included; availability and compatibility of individual listings can vary.
- For a usable music player, also check the handset’s battery and whether it can transfer and play local music. The launch-era runtime figures do not describe a two-decade-old battery.
For setup instructions, consult the official W800i guide. The documented workflow is transferring music from a CD or computer with Disc2Phone and playing files stored on the card.
