The Sony ECM-AX10 is a compact USB-C microphone for smartphones that Sony announced on October 8, 2026. Its spherical module holds four omnidirectional capsules and records in Ambisonics, binaural, or stereo, with Ambisonics aimed at spatial-audio publishing. Sony calls it the first Eclipsa Audio-certified microphone for smartphones. Everything below on performance comes from Sony’s own announcements, because no independent hands-on test had been published when this article was written.
What the ECM-AX10 is
The ECM-AX10 is a smartphone microphone aimed at vloggers, mobile filmmakers, and other creators who want more than a phone’s built-in mic. According to Sony, its spherical module contains four omnidirectional microphone capsules, which is what makes its spatial recording modes possible. The product page lists it as Sony ECM-AX10 under Sony’s professional audio category on the Sony US ECM-AX10 product page.

How to read “without capturing you in wires”
The mic itself is connected by a USB-C cable to the phone. The phrase in the headline refers to avoiding a separate arrangement of wired microphones and a standalone recorder, not to wireless operation. If you were hoping for a Bluetooth or radio mic, the announcement does not describe one.

Recording modes
Sony describes three modes. Each serves a different stage of production or a different listener.
#1 Best Overall
- IMMERSIVE SPATIAL AUDIO: Four integrated omnidirectional microphone capsules capture balanced, positional sound with accurate 3D placement, bringing greater realism and immersion to videos.
- FLEXIBLE AUDIO FORMATS: Choose Ambisonics for immersive playback, binaural audio for headphone listening and broad platform compatibility, or conventional stereo for a familiar recording experience.
- CLEARER SOUND IN CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENTS: Switchable Noise Cut and Low Cut filters reduce unwanted background noise, low-frequency rumble, wind, air conditioning, and other vibrations. The included detachable fur-type windscreen further reduces wind noise outdoors.
- COMPACT USB TYPE-C DESIGN: Weighing approximately 24 g, the slim ECM-AX10 is easy to carry and connects directly to a compatible device through USB Type-C, with no extra connectors required.
- FLEXIBLE SHOOTING AND STABLE SETUP: A built-in accelerometer automatically detects the microphone’s orientation, while the included cold-shoe microphone holder and USB Type-C extension cable support stable shooting and flexible rigging.
| Mode | What Sony says it is for | Relation to Eclipsa Audio |
|---|---|---|
| Ambisonics | Spatial-audio production; used with Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app | Sony says this is the mode used to support Eclipsa Audio publishing on YouTube |
| Binaural | An immersive experience for headphone listeners | Described as headphone-optimized and usable where Eclipsa Audio is not supported |
| Stereo | Everyday video and broader playback | Not described by Sony as an Eclipsa Audio workflow |
The practical split is simple: choose Ambisonics if the goal is a spatial mix for Eclipsa Audio publishing, binaural if the audience will listen on headphones and you need output that works without that platform support, and stereo for ordinary clips where spatial processing is unnecessary. Sony also says the mic works with general recording and video apps in stereo mode, not only with its own apps, which matters if you already have a capture workflow.
From capture to export in the Spatial Audio Video Tool
Sony says its Spatial Audio Video Tool app covers the whole smartphone process for spatial video. As described in the Sony Electronics US press announcement, the sequence is:
Rank #2
- Lightweight Design: Weighing only 160 grams, this microphone is easy to carry and maneuver.
- Unidirectional Polar Pattern: Captures sound from a single direction for clear, focused audio.
- High Signal-to-Noise Ratio: With a 69 decibel signal-to-noise ratio, this microphone delivers clear audio even in noisy environments.
- XLR Connectivity: This microphone has a 3-pin XLR connector for easy connection to camcorders and other audio equipment.
- Premium Sony Branding: Part of Sony's ECM series, this microphone is built to professional standards and quality.
- Connect the ECM-AX10 to the phone by USB-C and select Ambisonics recording mode.
- Record video inside the Spatial Audio Video Tool.
- Review the clip and make simple edits in the app.
- Export the finished video with spatial audio.
- Publish to YouTube with Eclipsa Audio, which Sony says the Ambisonics output supports.
Sony says some recording, editing, and exporting functions require this dedicated app, so do not plan a workflow that depends on third-party apps for those steps. The menu labels inside the app were not described in the announcement, so check them on your own device when the app is installed.

Phone compatibility
Sony’s stated requirements are a smartphone with a USB-C port running iOS 18 or later, or Android 14 or later. Sony also says recording quality may vary between smartphones, and that devices not on its supported-model list have not been tested for operating quality. Before you buy, confirm three things:
- Your phone has a USB-C port and runs iOS 18 or later, or Android 14 or later.
- Your model appears on the supported-model list Sony points to in its announcement.
- Your intended workflow does not need a function that Sony says requires the dedicated app, unless you are willing to install and use that app.
Having a USB-C port alone does not establish compatibility. Sony’s own wording distinguishes between a phone that meets the stated requirements and a phone that appears on the tested list.
Rank #4
- High-quality microphone capsules for clear voice recording
- Low intrinsic noise levels deliver clear sound
- Directivity selectable to suit the scene
- Noise-suppressing filter functions
- Pop guard to suppress popping noise due to vocal plosives
Price, availability, and weight
| Region | Price stated by Sony | Availability | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $249.99 MSRP | Presale stated as available in the October 8, 2026 announcement | Sony US press announcement; Sony US product page |
| Europe | Approximately €199 | From October 2026, per Sony Europe | Sony Europe announcement |
| Weight (all regions) | Approximately 24 g | Manufacturer-published figure, not an independent measurement | Sony Europe announcement |
The two prices are regional and are not conversions of each other. Retail prices and stock can change after the announcement, so check the current price on Sony’s site or with your retailer before you buy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Sony says about the sound
Sony’s announcement quotes Mr. Iwana, a sound engineer at Sony PCL, describing the ECM-AX10’s sound:
Best Value
- Dual-channel wireless microphone for high-quality digital recording
- Communication is possible at up to 492 ft (150 m)
- High signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) microphone units
- Noise-suppressing filter functions
- Multi Interface (MI) Shoe compatible
“The orchestral sound recorded with the ECM-AX10 captures the music with remarkable depth, with quick response in the low and low-mid ranges, while the high frequencies are expansive and moving. For ambient sound, it also delivers an impressive sense of presence, richly reproducing the three-dimensionality of sound and the spaciousness of a 360-degree sound field.”
This is Sony PCL’s assessment of its own product, not an independent listening test. The fair way to use it is as a description of what Sony intends the mic to capture, which you can check against your own recordings.
What is not yet established
- No independent review or side-by-side test of the ECM-AX10 had been published when this article was written, so claims about sound quality and spatial accuracy remain Sony’s.
- No direct comparison with other spatial or smartphone microphones is available from a neutral source, so this article does not rank the ECM-AX10 against alternatives.
- Spatial audio will not sound identical on every playback device. Sony’s own description treats YouTube Eclipsa Audio publishing and binaural headphone listening as separate workflows.
- The 4K capability described for December 2026 onward is a plan, not a shipping feature as of October 9, 2026.
Before you buy
- Confirm your phone’s USB-C port and operating system version against Sony’s stated requirements.
- Check the supported-model list on Sony’s site for your exact phone.
- Decide which output you need: Ambisonics for Eclipsa Audio on YouTube, binaural for headphone listeners, or stereo for general use.
- If you plan to edit or export spatial video, install the Spatial Audio Video Tool and test one short clip before a important shoot.
- Confirm the price and stock in your region, since the US and European figures differ.
Used this way, the ECM-AX10 is worth considering if your phone is on Sony’s supported list and you publish to platforms that accept Eclipsa Audio. If your audience only listens in stereo on phones and speakers, a simpler microphone will likely meet the need.
