For Sony DVD players sold in the United States, there is no supported way to override the region code. Sony also says those players support NTSC, not PAL or SECAM. If you are seeing an area-limit error, first check both the disc’s region and its video format; a Region 0 or All disc may work, but that is a disc property, not an unlock.
Can you unlock the region on a Sony DVD player?
For U.S.-sold Sony DVD players and recorders, Sony’s answer is no: “There is no way to override the region code or make the player support a different video format.” Sony’s U.S. compatibility guidance was last modified February 3, 2025.
That guidance is specific to products sold in the United States. If your player was sold elsewhere, check its model-specific manual and the Sony support page for your country. Sony India’s general guidance likewise says region mismatches cannot be overridden, while directing owners to the manual for any stated exception: Sony India’s region-code guidance.
A remote-control button sequence or firmware hack should not be treated as a universal Sony solution. The supported guidance does not provide one, and a procedure claimed for one model may not apply to another.

Why does the player say playback is prohibited by area limitations?
The message usually means the DVD’s region code does not match the player’s region. Sony gives the example of a Region 6 disc in a Region 1 player. Depending on the model and country, the wording may appear as “ERROR: Playing Of This Disc Prohibited By Area Limits” or “Playback prohibited by area limitations.” See Sony India’s region-code explanation and Sony India’s playback-error guidance.
Check the small globe symbol on the DVD or its packaging. Sony describes the region number as printed inside that symbol; if a disc supports multiple regions, more than one number may appear. A disc without regional coding may be marked “0” or “ALL.” Sony’s geographic descriptions of the regions are useful orientation, but the printed symbol and your player’s documentation are the better checks for a particular disc and device.

These are Sony’s descriptions of DVD regions, not a guarantee that every disc from a listed area uses only that code. Sony notes that region codes do not apply to recordable DVDs; see Sony Latin America’s explanation of DVD region codes.
Check the video format as well as the region
Region and video format are separate compatibility checks. Sony says U.S.-sold DVD players support NTSC and are not compatible with PAL or SECAM video. So a disc can pass the region check and still fail because its video format is unsupported by the player. Look for the format information on the disc or packaging and compare it with the manual for your exact model.

Sony also says U.S. players can play DVDs labeled Region 0 or All. Those labels indicate a disc that is not restricted to one numbered region; they do not change the player’s region setting or make it compatible with every video format.
What to do if the disc should work
- Check the disc’s globe symbol. Compare its region number—or 0/All marking—with the region specified for your player in its manual.
- Check the video format. Confirm that the disc’s format is supported by your player; for U.S.-sold Sony models, Sony specifies NTSC support, not PAL or SECAM.
- Try another appropriate-region disc. If a disc that should match the player’s region suddenly triggers a region error, Sony says service may be required. Use the support page for your model and country to find the applicable service route: Sony India’s troubleshooting guidance.
If you regularly need DVDs from other regions
A separate multi-region DVD player is a possible hardware alternative; it does not unlock or alter your existing Sony player. A 2003 submission to the U.S. Copyright Office discusses modified and multi-region players, but it is historical and does not establish the current availability, specifications or legal treatment of a particular device. Check a candidate player’s current manufacturer documentation for supported DVD regions, PAL/NTSC compatibility, disc formats and output connections before buying.
