Sony’s January 2025 announcement covered recordable media, not every Blu-ray disc. It ended production of Sony recordable Blu-ray discs, recording MiniDiscs, MD Data media for recording, and MiniDV cassettes as of February 2025. It did not announce that Blu-ray movies or all Blu-ray-format releases were ending.
Is Sony discontinuing Blu-ray discs?
Sony’s announcement concerned blank, recordable Blu-ray media—not factory-pressed Blu-ray movies. IEEE Spectrum reported that new Blu-ray movies remained available after the announcement. The distinction is whether a disc is manufactured with content already on it or sold blank for someone to record.
Sony’s notice, as reported by IEEE Spectrum in January 2025, covered Sony Blu-ray Disc media for recording, MiniDiscs for recording, MD Data media for recording, and MiniDV cassettes. Production was to end as of February 2025, with no successor models. That timing describes Sony’s production decision; it does not mean stores immediately ran out, or that every other manufacturer stopped making recordable discs.

The 2025 recordable-media announcement did not say that pre-recorded Blu-ray movies or games were ending. IEEE Spectrum reported that new Blu-ray movies remained available. The announcement also did not say that other makers had discontinued recordable Blu-ray media.

A separate development concerns future PlayStation games. On July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that production of physical game discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles would be discontinued starting January 2028. The PlayStation Blog announcement says the change does not affect games that already released, or will release before January 2028, in disc format. This is a separate policy about new PlayStation games, not the 2025 decision about blank recordable media.
Which Sony media products were affected?
- Recordable Blu-ray Disc media: blank media intended for recording, not pressed Blu-ray movies.
- MiniDisc for recording: recordable MiniDiscs, rather than a general announcement about all MiniDisc playback or recording equipment.
- MD Data for recording: Sony’s listed recordable MD Data media.
- MiniDV cassettes: recording tapes included in the same production notice.
Why did Sony stop production?
A Sony representative quoted by IEEE Spectrum said: “Considering the market environment and future growth potential of the market, we have decided to discontinue production.” The report did not provide a specific sales figure or more detailed rationale.

Are MiniDiscs still being made?
Sony’s notice included MiniDiscs for recording, with production ending as of February 2025 and no successor models. That does not establish that every seller has run out of existing stock, nor does it establish the current availability of MiniDisc hardware. If you use MiniDisc, check separately for recordable media and for compatible equipment; the production notice was about media.

What to check before buying recordable Blu-ray discs
Sony’s exit makes it especially important to confirm the exact media and drive requirements before buying. IEEE Spectrum reported that other consumer options remained, but current listings, prices, and stock vary and were not established here.
