Sony is bringing Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-upscaling option, to the standard PlayStation 5. The company says its streamlined neural-network design is tuned for the console and improves image detail and stability, but it has not published performance measurements showing how large those improvements are or whether they match PS5 Pro results.
What QSSR does on the standard PS5
QSSR is an AI-upscaling library: it uses a neural network to process a game image as it is enlarged. Sony says the standard PS5 implementation uses a streamlined architecture and console-specific tuning to make this approach practical on the hardware. The technology comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics collaboration with AMD.
Sony describes the intended benefits as more image detail and greater stability. Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; he added that its computational demands had previously made bringing the experience to PS5 impossible. These are Sony’s claims, not independently measured results.

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use the library. It said both were being patched on October 1, 2026, to add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology, Mike Fitzgerald, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer, Jasmin Patry, said the technology resolves fine character and environment details with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. Both comments describe the developers’ views; Sony’s announcement does not include comparative image tests.
Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but it has not announced further supported games or a schedule for future patches. Broad availability to developers should not be taken as confirmation that a particular game will receive the feature.

QSSR versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
QSSR is not the same claim as getting PS5 Pro performance on a standard PS5. Sony calls QSSR a “new performance tier” and says PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro. The announcement does not say QSSR matches PSSR’s image quality or makes the standard console equivalent to the Pro model.
| Feature | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Console identified by Sony | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Game support stated by Sony | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were the first named titles; both were being patched to add it as an option on October 1, 2026. | Sony said on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used in over 50 PS5 Pro titles to date. |
| Image-quality claim | Sony claims improved detail and stability; no quantified QSSR result was published. | Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling. |
Sony introduced PSSR as machine-learning-based AI upscaling for PS5 Pro in 2024 and noted that the Pro’s enhanced features vary by game. The over-50 figure is about PSSR adoption on PS5 Pro, not QSSR support on standard PS5.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
What Sony has—and has not—shown
The October 1 announcement does not provide a QSSR benchmark, independent comparison, output-resolution figure, frame-rate result, or measured image-quality result. It therefore establishes the feature’s stated purpose, initial named games, and availability as an in-game option—not how much it improves a particular scene or whether it changes performance. Actual support and implementation are game-specific, and the option must be offered by the game.
For now, QSSR is best understood as a new upscaling choice for supported standard-PS5 games, rather than a promise of PS5 Pro-level visuals across the console’s library.
