Yes. Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-upscaling technology designed for the standard PlayStation 5. It is intended to improve fine image detail and temporal stability while fitting within the base console’s performance limits. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, alongside patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What QSSR does on the standard PS5
QSSR analyzes rendered game images and reconstructs a higher-quality output using a neural network. Sony says the technology can add pixel-level clarity and improve image stability, particularly in detailed environments, characters and other fine features.
Unlike a conventional resolution scaler, QSSR is designed around AI-based reconstruction. Sony describes it as a faster performance tier that can operate within the standard PS5’s hardware limits.
How QSSR differs from PSSR on PS5 Pro
| Feature | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Target hardware | Standard PlayStation 5 | PlayStation 5 Pro |
| Role | Faster AI-upscaling tier for the base console | Sony’s higher-end AI-upscaling technology for PS5 Pro |
| Design approach | Streamlined neural-network architecture and a PS5-specific, hand-tuned implementation | Analyzes game images pixel by pixel and upscales them with AI |
| Reported benefit | Improved image detail and image stability, according to Sony | Higher-end image-quality processing on PS5 Pro |
| Game support | Requires a compatible game patch | Requires PS5 Pro support in the game |
QSSR is therefore not simply PSSR moved unchanged to cheaper hardware. Sony presents it as a separate, performance-optimized implementation, while PSSR remains the reference technology for PS5 Pro.

What changed technically
A streamlined neural network
Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture. In practical terms, this is intended to reduce the processing workload compared with a larger or more demanding model, allowing the technology to run on standard PS5 hardware.
Hand-tuned PS5 implementation
The company also says engineers created a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5. Sony has not disclosed the model size, processing cost, internal resolution targets or other numerical specifications.

First games with QSSR support
Sony announced two initial compatible games. Both received patches on October 1, 2026 that add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

| Game | QSSR status | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | Available after the October 1, 2026 patch | QSSR is offered as an additional graphics option on standard PS5 |
| Ghost of Yōtei | Available after the October 1, 2026 patch | QSSR is offered as an additional graphics option on standard PS5 |
QSSR support is implemented by individual games, so the console cannot automatically add it to every existing PS5 title. Sony says the technology will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, but it has not published a complete future compatibility list.

Will QSSR make PS5 games look sharper?
That is the intended result. Sony reports improvements in image detail and image stability, and developers from Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions specifically describe clearer fine detail in environments and characters.
The announcement does not include independent testing or numerical comparisons. Sony has not stated a universal output resolution, frame-rate increase, latency figure or image-quality score. Results can therefore vary by game, graphics mode and the developer’s implementation.
Rank #4
- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
How to use QSSR when a game supports it
- Update the PS5 system software and the supported game.
- Launch the patched title on a standard PS5.
- Open the game’s graphics, display or video settings.
- Select the QSSR-enabled graphics option, if the game exposes it.
The exact label and available modes are controlled by each developer. QSSR support does not guarantee that every title will present the same balance of resolution, detail and frame rate.
What Sony has not announced
- No numerical resolution target for QSSR.
- No universal frame-rate or latency improvement.
- No benchmark comparing QSSR directly with PSSR.
- No complete list of upcoming compatible games.
- No claim that QSSR will be added automatically to unpatched games.
Why this matters for PS5 owners
QSSR gives developers another way to improve image reconstruction on the large installed base of standard PS5 consoles, rather than reserving Sony’s newest upscaling work for PS5 Pro. Its value will depend on how many games adopt it and how each studio tunes its graphics modes.
Best Value
- Slim Design, players get powerful gaming technology packed inside a sleek and compact console design.
- 825GB of storage, keep your favorite games raeady and waiting for you to jump in and play
- Ultra-High Speed SSD, maximize yoru play sessions with near instant load times for installed PS5 games
- Integrated I/O, the custom integration of the PS5 console's systems lets creators pull datat from the SSD so quickly that they can design games in ways never before possible
- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
For now, the confirmed picture is limited but clear: QSSR is a new, faster AI-upscaling tier for standard PS5, derived from Sony’s Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, with the first support arriving in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
