Sony’s new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is an AI-upscaling option for PS5, and the first announced games to offer it are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games were slated to receive patches on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an optional graphics setting. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability, but its announcement does not include independent tests or quantified performance results.
What QSSR does on PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, is an AI-upscaling library Sony announced for PS5. Upscaling is a rendering technique that uses a lower-resolution image as a starting point and reconstructs a higher-detail output. Sony describes QSSR as a way to improve image detail and stability on PS5.
Sony says QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The company points to two implementation choices behind QSSR’s performance on PS5: a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation. It does not publish a technical specification or measurements in the announcement. Sony’s October 1, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement is the source for these descriptions.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two launch games. It said both would be patched on October 1, 2026, to add QSSR as an additional graphics option:
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Marvel’s Wolverine
- Ghost of Yōtei
Sony frames QSSR as a setting offered by individual games through patches, not as a system-wide PS5 toggle. Check each game’s graphics options after installing its update to see whether QSSR is available. Sony says it plans to offer the library broadly to PlayStation developers, but the announcement gives no further supported-game list or rollout dates.
QSSR on PS5 vs. PSSR on PS5 Pro
Sony positions QSSR and PSSR in different console tiers. PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is available on PS5 Pro; QSSR is the new option for PS5. Sony calls PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro and describes QSSR as a faster evolution adapted for PS5.

| Technology | Console availability | What Sony says | Game support established in the announcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| QSSR | PS5 | A faster evolution of PSSR, with a streamlined neural-network architecture and hand-tuned implementation. | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were named as receiving it through patches as an additional graphics option. |
| PSSR | PS5 Pro | Sony calls it the gold standard on PS5 Pro. | The announcement does not provide a game list. |
This is a comparison of Sony’s positioning, not evidence that QSSR matches PSSR. The announcement reports no resolution figures, frame-rate results, latency measurements, or direct image-quality comparison for either technology.

What the game developers say
In Sony’s announcement, Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, including busy streets and dense alleyways. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said QSSR resolves fine details in characters and environments in Ghost of Yōtei with temporal stability that had not been possible on PS5 until then.
