The Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio is a three-speaker front system; the BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 and Sub 9 are separate, compatible upgrades that add wireless surround speakers and a subwoofer. Sony lists the combination as compatible, but the available independent review tested Rear 9 with the smaller Sub 8—not Sub 9—so its listening findings do not verify the exact configuration discussed here.
What the Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9 each do
Sony introduced the BRAVIA Theatre Trio on 27 May 2026 as a premium home-theatre system designed for large-screen viewing. Its three separate front speakers provide left, centre and right channels: the centre handles dialogue, while the left and right speakers create a wider front stage than a single-piece soundbar. The Rear 9 and Sub 9 are optional additions, not part of the Trio itself.

- BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 (SA-SW9): A separate subwoofer for low-frequency output. Sony specifies dual opposing 200 mm aluminum drivers and up to 600 W of power. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test measurements. (Sony BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9)
Sony says the Trio was developed with input from sound creators at Sony Pictures Entertainment. A manufacturer-published testimonial from Academy Award-nominated sound mixer Tony Lamberti calls its spatiality “exceptional”; treat that as promotional endorsement, not a substitute for an independent evaluation.

Sony lists both the SA-RS9 Rear 9 and SA-SW9 Sub 9 as compatible with the BRAVIA Theatre Trio. Rear 9 setup is guided through the BRAVIA Connect app. Sony says the phone and product must be connected to the same home network, and app features can depend on region, compatible products and software. - Connect the phone running BRAVIA Connect and the products to the same home network.
- Follow the app’s setup instructions, then use the Trio’s room-calibration process and supplied USB Type-C microphone to account for your room and speaker arrangement.
Sony also says Rear 9 can connect wirelessly to certain compatible BRAVIA TVs without a soundbar, but the TV must appear on Sony’s compatibility list. That separate TV-only use should not be taken as proof that every BRAVIA TV supports it. Sony says a swivel wall mount is included with Rear 9.
What Hi-Fi? reports that the Trio can also work with several earlier Sony subwoofers and rear speakers, including SA-SW5, SA-SW3, SA-RS5 and SA-RS3S. What independent listening evidence says—and does not say
What Hi-Fi? describes the Trio as a 3.0.2-channel system, with up-firing drivers in the left and right speakers, HDMI eARC, an HDMI input, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The review also lists Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect support, and says the BRAVIA Connect app calibration can account for speaker location and height. These are details reported by the reviewer; check Sony’s current specifications for your region before relying on a particular input or service.

In its listening evaluation, What Hi-Fi? praised the Trio’s scale, immersive presentation and genuine left-right stereo separation. It also noted that some competitors sounded cleaner or more detailed, that the system lacks a traditional display, and that the centre speaker could buzz slightly during very deep bass passages in the standalone setup.

The review tested an expanded arrangement with Rear 9 and a Sub 8. It found that the rear speakers increased immersion and that moving bass duties to the subwoofer removed the centre-speaker buzz observed with the standalone Trio. That result is evidence about the reviewed Sub 8 arrangement; it is not a listening test of Rear 9 paired with Sub 9. The cited sources do not establish independent listening results for the exact Trio + Rear 9 + Sub 9 configuration.
Sub 9 power and using two subwoofers
Sony specifies the Sub 9 at up to 600 W and describes its dual opposing 200 mm aluminum drivers. The power figure is a manufacturer specification; it should not be read as an independently measured output level or a guarantee of performance in a particular room.

Sony says two Sub 9 units can be used for a dual-subwoofer setup only when the main system supports that arrangement, and the two subwoofers must be the same model. How to compare this setup with alternatives
The Trio plus its add-ons is best compared with a single premium soundbar, a bundled soundbar-and-surround package, or a speaker-based alternative such as Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Quad. Compare the complete systems rather than treating the Trio’s base price or hardware as if it included the optional speakers.

In What Hi-Fi?’s subjective comparison, the Trio’s separated front channels gave it greater scale than the Sonos Arc Ultra, while the KEF XIO sounded cleaner and more detailed. Those are that publication’s findings in its listening conditions, not universal measurements or a guarantee of how either system will sound in every room.
Price and availability depend on market and date
Sony Electronics’ March 2026 US launch announcement listed suggested retail prices of $749.99 for Rear 9 and $899.99 for Sub 9. At access on 9 October 2026, Sony’s US product pages showed sale prices of $549.99 and $599.99, respectively. Sale prices can change, so check current listings before purchase; neither the US figures nor availability should be assumed to apply in another country.
