The Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad (HT-A9M2) is a premium home-theater system built around four wireless speakers and a separate control box. What Hi-Fi? praises its spacious, immersive presentation and convenient setup, but also flags its high cost and light bass without a subwoofer. It makes most sense if room-filling sound and flexible speaker placement matter more to you than keeping the system inexpensive or compact.
What the BRAVIA Theater Quad is
The HT-A9M2 combines four speakers with a separate control box rather than putting every channel in one soundbar. Sony lists support for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS formats including DTS:X, LPCM and 360 Reality Audio. Sony’s specifications also list the supplied speakers at approximately 11.5 × 12.13 × 5.13 inches with their stand or mount, and the control box at approximately 6.38 × 2.25 × 6.38 inches. Check local specifications and package contents before buying, since these details can vary by region. Sony’s specifications
The four-speaker layout is the system’s defining trade-off: it offers more placement flexibility than a single soundbar, while avoiding the long runs of speaker cable associated with a conventional receiver-based setup. It still requires space for four speakers and a suitable place for the control box.

How it sounds, according to What Hi-Fi?
What Hi-Fi? describes the Quad’s sound as clear, spacious, immersive and engaging, and lists intuitive setup and wired and wireless connectivity among its strengths. Those are the publication’s review findings, not independent testing for this article. Its main sound reservation is bass: it says low frequencies lack weight and impact, particularly for listeners seeking a more forceful movie soundtrack or music presentation. What Hi-Fi?’s review

- ROOM OPTIMIZED SOUND: Sound is auto calibrated to your room’s characteristics with Sound Field Optimization.
- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Supports industry-standard formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced.
- INNOVATIVE ACOUSTIC DESIGN: With 16 speaker units, hear exceptional acoustic performance and precise room filling spatial audio.
- WIRELESS SPEAKERS: Position the four wireless speakers virtually anywhere in the room for total flexibility.
Consider the subwoofer in the real system cost
Sony-associated product material names the SA-SW5 and SA-SW3 as compatible wireless subwoofers. What Hi-Fi? says an external subwoofer feels close to essential for getting the most from the Quad. Adding one may help address the system’s bass limitation, but it raises the total purchase cost and adds another component to accommodate in the room. Confirm compatibility and availability for your region before choosing a model. Sony’s regional product material
Connections and device compatibility
What Hi-Fi?’s system roundup reports an eARC connection and one HDMI input, with video pass-through for 4K/120Hz, HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, ALLM and VRR. It also reports Bluetooth 5.2, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support. These are useful capabilities, but they do not guarantee that every TV, console and source-device arrangement will work as you expect. What Hi-Fi?’s system roundup

Before purchase, check the connection path you plan to use. The system has a single HDMI input, so consider whether your other sources will connect to the TV or through the control box, and whether your TV supports eARC. If you use a console, verify that the Quad’s pass-through and your TV’s connections fit your requirements for 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM. A format appearing in a product roundup is not a substitute for checking the specific devices and signal path in your setup.
Setup and room fit
What Hi-Fi? says the BRAVIA Connect app guides setup and uses a smartphone microphone for automatic calibration. That can make initial configuration easier than assembling and calibrating a receiver-and-speaker system. The wireless speaker arrangement also avoids trailing speaker cables across the room, but the speakers still need sensible positions and power access. Think through where all four can go before buying; wireless placement does not eliminate the need to plan around furniture, walkways and outlets.

How to compare it with a soundbar or receiver system
The Quad occupies a premium middle ground: more distributed than a single soundbar, but less component-based than a traditional receiver setup. A conventional 5.1.2 system may suit buyers who want to choose individual speakers and expand over time; a soundbar package may be preferable if fewer devices and a simpler physical footprint matter most. Compare the options against your room and equipment rather than assuming that channel format alone predicts the experience.
- Total cost: Include any optional subwoofer, not just the four-speaker package.
- Placement: Decide whether four wireless speakers solve a real cabling or layout problem in your room.
- Bass: Weigh the review’s bass criticism against your listening habits and whether you are willing to add a subwoofer.
- Connections: Check eARC, the single HDMI input and the source-device path you intend to use.
- Gaming video: Confirm that the TV and system connection plan support the console features you care about, such as 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM.
- Flexibility: Balance guided setup and a wireless layout against the component choice and potential expandability of a receiver-based system.
Price and software support
For historical UK context only, What Hi-Fi? reported a £2,499 launch price and a £1,799 Richer Sounds deal on January 21, 2026. Those are dated figures, not current prices or an indication of present stock. Check retailers for a current quote and compare it with the cost of any subwoofer you would add. - CERTIFIED REFURBISHED: This manufacturer-refurbished unit shows limited (if any) wear and has been fully tested to deliver the same reliable, like-new performance. It arrives with all essential components and is backed by a 90-day warranty for your peace of mind.
Sony’s US support listing showed firmware version 001.456 dated September 15, 2026, indicating recent support activity; the listing examined did not explain what that update changes. Check Sony support for current firmware information relevant to your region and system. Sony’s US support page
Verdict
The BRAVIA Theater Quad is a compelling option to investigate if you value an immersive, spacious presentation and want wireless speakers rather than a conventional speaker-and-receiver installation. Its case weakens if you need strong bass out of the box or want to keep spending in check, especially if an added subwoofer is part of your plan. What Hi-Fi?’s review supports the system’s convenience and sound ambitions, but its price and bass concerns make room fit, connections and the complete system cost essential parts of the buying decision.
