For most buyers, the Sony BRAVIA 7 II is the better buy. Tom’s Guide recommends it for most shoppers because it delivers much of the BRAVIA 9 II experience at a substantially lower price in the publication’s September 2026 comparison. Choose the BRAVIA 9 II instead if brighter HDR highlights, better handling of direct glare, or a screen as large as 115 inches matters more than the premium.

BRAVIA 9 II vs. BRAVIA 7 II at a glance

Priority Better fit What the comparison found
Value for most buyers BRAVIA 7 II Tom’s Guide recommended it to most shoppers and reported a lower 65-inch price at publication. That was a snapshot, not a current quote.
Brighter HDR highlights BRAVIA 9 II Tom’s Guide measured 3,903 nits versus 2,077 nits on a 10% HDR window in Professional picture mode.
Room with direct sunlight or strong glare BRAVIA 9 II Tom’s Guide describes its screen as matte-style and better at blunting direct glare; the 7 II does not have that finish.
Smaller screen options BRAVIA 7 II The comparison says the 7 II range includes 50- and 55-inch sizes that are not offered in the 9 II range.
Largest screen BRAVIA 9 II Sony announced a 115-inch-class 9 II; the 7 II range reaches 98-inch class.

Tom’s Guide’s September 25, 2026 comparison scored the BRAVIA 9 II 93/100 and the BRAVIA 7 II 91/100, yet recommended the 7 II to most buyers. That distinction matters: the flagship performed better overall in that review, but the value recommendation depended on what most shoppers would gain for the additional cost. Read Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

Picture quality: the flagship’s clearest advantage is HDR brightness

HDR highlights

In Tom’s Guide’s test, the BRAVIA 9 II reached 3,903 nits and the BRAVIA 7 II 2,077 nits on a 10% HDR window, with both televisions measured in Professional picture mode. This is a substantial difference on that test pattern and favors the 9 II for bright highlights in HDR content. It is a measured result from that publication, not a guarantee of what every scene, setting, or room will look like.

SDR brightness

The gap was negligible on the publication’s 10% white SDR window: 101 nits for the 9 II and 100 nits for the 7 II, again in Professional mode. The flagship’s HDR result should not be read as evidence that it is brighter in every viewing situation.

What “True RGB” means

These models use a different Mini LED backlight approach from conventional sets that shine a white backlight through a color-filter layer. What Hi-Fi? describes the BRAVIA 9 II as using independently controlled red, green, and blue Mini LEDs to generate color directly. Sony says the 9 II uses RGB Triluminos Max and Luminance Booster Pro, and claims expanded color volume and smoother gradation; those are manufacturer claims, not independent guarantees of superior results in every scene. Sony’s launch announcement also describes newly developed LED controllers for backlight control. See Sony’s announcement.

What Hi-Fi? reported 1,530 local dimming zones on its 65-inch BRAVIA 9 II review sample. That figure is specific to that size and review sample; it should not be assumed for every screen size. Read What Hi-Fi?’s review.

Screen finish and room lighting

The BRAVIA 9 II is the stronger fit if your viewing area has windows or intense direct light. Tom’s Guide describes its screen as matte-style and says it handles direct glare better than the BRAVIA 7 II, which lacks that finish. If your room is not affected by direct glare, this difference may not justify the flagship’s premium by itself; the brightness and size trade-offs are more useful decision points.

When Tom’s Guide published its comparison on September 25, 2026, it reported Best Buy prices of $3,599 for the 65-inch BRAVIA 9 II and $1,999 for the 65-inch BRAVIA 7 II. Those are dated retailer prices, not current or permanent prices. Check the listing for the exact screen size before buying; the article’s “about half the price” value case reflects its publication snapshot.

Choose the size that fits the room

Sony announced the BRAVIA 9 II in 115-inch class and the BRAVIA 7 II in 50- to 98-inch class. In practical terms, the 7 II is the option to investigate for a smaller screen, while the 9 II is the choice if you want the largest announced size. Confirm the model sizes actually sold in your region before settling on one; the lineup described here is based on Sony’s announcement and US listings.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the BRAVIA 7 II if value is the priority

  • You want a Sony True RGB television but do not need the flagship’s measured HDR brightness advantage.
  • You want a 50- or 55-inch option, which Tom’s Guide says is not available in the 9 II range.
  • Your room does not make the 9 II’s matte-style screen finish a decisive benefit.
  • The price difference between comparable sizes is large in the current listings you are considering.

Choose the BRAVIA 9 II if performance or glare control matters more

  • You prioritize brighter HDR highlights and the stronger result in Tom’s Guide’s 10% HDR-window test.
  • Direct light or windows make the described matte-style screen finish valuable.
  • You want the 115-inch-class option announced for this range.
  • You are comfortable paying a premium for those specific advantages rather than expecting a universal improvement in every viewing condition.

For more context on the 7 II’s standalone performance, TechRadar published a review on August 30, 2026, describing side-by-side testing against the LG C6 and Samsung R95H and measurements with calibration and color-measurement equipment. Its price snapshot is not a current quote. Read TechRadar’s BRAVIA 7 II review.
