The Sony BRAVIA 9 II is a very bright, color-rich 4K LCD TV that makes its strongest case in well-lit rooms and at very large sizes. It is not an OLED: even with RGB Mini LED backlighting, an LCD cannot control light pixel by pixel, and OLED retains an edge in dark-scene precision and off-axis consistency. The BRAVIA 9 II is worth considering if brightness, reflection handling, and a screen up to 115 inches matter more to you than OLED’s black-level precision—and if its high price and installation needs fit your room.

What is the Sony BRAVIA 9 II?

BRAVIA 9 II is Sony’s 2026 flagship 4K LCD television family, offered in 65-, 75-, 85-, and 115-inch classes. Sony’s Japanese model codes are K-65XR90M2, K-75XR90M2, K-85XR90M2, and K-115XR90M2; Sony’s US page identifies the 65-inch class as K65XR90M2. Size conventions and availability can vary by market.

The key technology is RGB Mini LED: red, green, and blue LEDs illuminate an LCD panel from behind. Sony calls the implementation True RGB and says the LEDs are independently controlled. That is different from OLED, where each pixel produces its own light. The set has 3,840 × 2,160 resolution and Sony’s XR picture processor. Sony also lists RGB Triluminos Max and X-Wide Angle Pro as features of the series. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements of picture performance.

How good is the picture?

Bright rooms, color, and reflections

In his July 10, 2026 review of a 65-inch sample, What Hi-Fi? reviewer Tom Parsons praised the BRAVIA 9 II’s color, brightness, local dimming, and natural-looking processing. He found it particularly convincing in a bright room. Tom’s Guide likewise reported that the anti-reflective finish performed very well against indoor light and window reflections in its tests. These are review findings from particular samples and conditions, not a guarantee for every room or unit.

What Hi-Fi? reported 1,530 local-dimming zones for its tested 65-inch sample. The same review said Sony demonstrated around 4,000 nits during an early Tokyo preview in Professional picture mode. That preview figure is not an independently verified sustained output for all scenes or all BRAVIA 9 II sizes.

Dark scenes and OLED precision

The trade-off becomes clearer in dark material. In a direct comparison, Parsons found that the BRAVIA 8 II OLED retained pixel-level contrast and more precise highlights against dark backgrounds. The BRAVIA 9 II uses local dimming across groups of LCD backlight zones rather than controlling every pixel’s light individually, so bright objects on black backgrounds can be less precisely isolated than on OLED.

What Hi-Fi? also reported color errors in a difficult title sequence from Blade Runner 2049. In a handful of Dolby Vision scenes on both UHD Blu-ray and streaming, the team noticed faint horizontal lines; it did not see them in the HDR10 versions. These are limited observations from that review’s testing, not evidence that every owner will encounter the issue. Firmware and playback conditions can change, so buyers concerned about Dolby Vision should try their usual content and sources during the return period.

Viewing from the side

Parsons found that color and contrast fell off farther off axis than on the BRAVIA 8 II OLED he compared. Sony lists X-Wide Angle Pro as a viewing-angle technology, but the independent comparison still found an OLED advantage. If many people watch from seats well to the side, compare the TVs from those actual positions rather than relying only on a straight-on showroom view.

BRAVIA 9 II versus OLED: which should you choose?

Priority BRAVIA 9 II OLED alternative
Bright-room use Reviewers praised its brightness and reflection handling in their tests. The cited direct comparison does not establish a general brightness result for all OLED models.
Dark-scene highlight precision Local dimming gives strong control, but it is not pixel-by-pixel. In What Hi-Fi?’s comparison, BRAVIA 8 II OLED held an advantage in pixel-level contrast and dark-background highlights.
Off-axis seating What Hi-Fi? observed losses in color and contrast farther to the side. What Hi-Fi? found the compared BRAVIA 8 II OLED more consistent off axis.
Very large screens Series sizes include 85 and 115 inches. Size availability depends on the OLED model and market; not established by the cited reviews.
Gaming connections The reviewed 65-inch set has two HDMI 2.1 and two HDMI 2.0 ports. Port counts vary by OLED model; not established by the cited reviews.

Choose the BRAVIA 9 II if the room is bright, the large-size options matter, and you value a bright, vivid image. Favor OLED if dark-room contrast, shadow detail, and consistent viewing from side seats are more important. These conclusions reflect the cited reviews, including one direct comparison with the BRAVIA 8 II OLED; they should not be read as universal results for every LCD or OLED television.

Does it support Dolby Vision, 4K/120Hz, and VRR?

Sony lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG support, along with 4K/120Hz over HDMI 2.1 and variable refresh rate (VRR). Google TV is the smart-TV platform; Sony also lists Google Cast and Apple AirPlay 2. These features can depend on region, software, service terms, and connected equipment.

If you have several high-bandwidth devices—such as a console and a gaming PC—plan which ones need HDMI 2.1 before buying. An HDMI 2.0 input will not provide the same 4K/120Hz connection.

How good is the built-in audio?

Sony lists Acoustic Multi-Audio+ with Beam Tweeter, Voice Zoom 3, 3D Surround Upscaling, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities; the cited review findings do not establish how the speakers perform in every room. A compatible external sound system is an option if built-in TV audio does not meet your needs. Sony describes integration with compatible BRAVIA audio systems, but the exact compatible models should be checked for your region.

75 and 85 inches

The 75- and 85-inch models extend the range for larger rooms, but the cited independent testing is for a 65-inch sample. Do not assume that measurements or findings for that sample establish identical performance, dimensions, or value at the larger sizes. Check the local model listing for current pricing, exact dimensions, and stand or wall-mount requirements.

115 inches

The 115-inch model is a major installation project, not simply a larger screen choice. Sony Japan lists the K-115XR90M2 at 256.5 × 153.5 × 54.0 cm with its standard stand and 111.8 kg with stand. Those Japanese specifications may not match another market’s configuration. Measure the route into the room, confirm wall and stand support, and arrange delivery and installation before ordering. What Hi-Fi? reported launch/test pricing of £22,999, $31,000, and AU$44,999 for this size; these are review-time figures, not guaranteed current offers.

What does the BRAVIA 9 II cost?

Prices vary by country, size, retailer, and promotion. For context, Sony’s US page listed $3,599.99 as the 65-inch MSRP when accessed in 2026. What Hi-Fi? reported launch/test pricing of £3,499, $3,600, and AU$5,999 for its 65-inch sample. These are listed or review-time prices, not a promise of today’s price. Check local listings for the exact model code and size before comparing offers.

Verdict: is the Sony BRAVIA 9 II worth it?

The BRAVIA 9 II is a compelling high-end LCD for buyers who want strong brightness and color, effective local dimming, and the option of a very large screen. Its case is strongest in brighter rooms. It is less persuasive if you primarily watch in a dark room, sit far off center, or expect LCD local dimming to match OLED pixel-level control. Add its high price, size-specific installation demands, and two HDMI 2.1 ports on the reviewed 65-inch set to the decision. The right choice depends on which of those trade-offs matters most in your room.
