Sonos announced on August 14, 2024, that it was eliminating about 100 positions—roughly 6% of its workforce—while the company was responding to problems with its redesigned app. Sonos described the cuts as a restructuring to improve its operating model and cost structure while preserving investment in its product roadmap. The available statements establish the timing and the company’s rationale, but do not prove that the app problems caused the layoffs.
What Sonos announced in August 2024
Sonos disclosed a reduction in force on August 14, 2024. Its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said the reduction involved approximately 6% of employees and estimated $9–12 million in restructuring and related charges, including $6–8 million in severance and benefits costs. The filing also said Sonos had committed to further reducing its real-estate footprint. Sonos’s August 14, 2024 Form 8-K
In a statement reported by TechCrunch that day, CEO Patrick Spence described the affected group as approximately 100 people, or 6% of the company. He said the restructuring was intended to improve Sonos’s operating model and cost structure while enabling meaningful investment in its product roadmap. The headcount and share were approximate, not an exact employee tally. TechCrunch’s August 14 report

What the app crisis had to do with the timing
Sonos began rolling out its redesigned app on May 7, 2024. In its August 7 third-quarter fiscal 2024 results, the company acknowledged that customers and partners had experienced problems after the rollout. Spence said those problems required Sonos to reduce its fiscal 2024 guidance, and that the company had an action plan to address them. Sonos’s August 7, 2024 earnings release

That context explains why coverage linked the layoffs to the app crisis, but it does not establish that app problems were the direct cause of the August workforce decision. Sonos’s filing described the restructuring in terms of its operating model and cost structure; Spence separately said app recovery remained a priority. Those are company statements, not proof that the cuts fixed the app or had no effect on recovery.
TechCrunch reported that Spence estimated app fixes and efforts to bring consumers back would cost in the neighborhood of $20–30 million. That estimate was attributed to Spence’s remarks on the earnings call; it is not a figure stated in the August 14 layoff filing. TechCrunch’s August 14 report

How Sonos said it was addressing app problems
On October 1, 2024, Sonos announced seven customer-experience commitments, including stronger customer-experience benchmarks and pre-launch testing, staged major app changes, a quality ombudsperson, a customer advisory board, extended warranties for certain speakers, and regular app updates. The company said more than 80% of the app’s missing features had been reintroduced and that it expected nearly all of the rest back in the coming weeks. That was Sonos’s report at the time, not an independent measurement or a current app-status figure. Sonos’s October 1, 2024 customer commitments

The separate Sonos workforce reduction in 2025
Sonos announced another reorganization on February 5, 2025, involving approximately 12% of employees, with estimated related charges of $15–18 million, according to its Form 10-Q. This was a later and distinct reduction—not an expansion of the August 2024 figure. The filing also recorded Spence’s January 2025 departure and Tom Conrad’s appointment as interim CEO.
