The Sonos Ace Ultra is a substantial upgrade over the original Ace, especially for music: reviewers hear a fuller, more open and better-organized presentation. Its adaptive noise cancellation is strong, and its standout extra is the ability to transfer audio from compatible Sonos speakers and soundbars. But it is not an undisputed class leader for musical precision or dynamics, and its ecosystem features matter most if you already own Sonos gear.

What’s new, and what does it cost?

TechRadar dates the Ace Ultra’s release to September 2026 and lists launch prices of $449 in the US, £399 in the UK and AU$699 in Australia. Those are regional launch prices, not confirmation of today’s price, deals or availability. Its published specifications include custom 40mm drivers, Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C, a 20Hz–20kHz frequency range, and a weight of 322g. TechRadar’s review is the source for those details.

The new model also adds a ten-microphone array, adaptive ANC, Aware Mode with optional Voice Boost, TrueCinema spatial calibration for films and Headphone Linking with compatible Sonos products, according to What Hi-Fi?’s review. Sonos says the Ultra’s noise blocking is “twice as effective” as the original Ace’s; that is the company’s claim, not an independently established measurement in the cited reviews.

How does the Ace Ultra sound?

The clearest improvement over the original Ace is its music presentation. TechRadar’s reviewer, after about two weeks of listening primarily to Tidal and comparing the Ultra with the original Ace and Sony WH-1000XM6, describes a broader, more organized soundstage with more detail and better balance. What Hi-Fi? also hears a significant step forward, characterizing the sound as richer, fuller and weighty.

Sonos Ace Ultra Over-Ear Headphones with Noise Cancellation - Black
  • Sonos-designed driver for deep, rich, detailed sound.
  • High-resolution wireless audio with ultra-low latency.
  • Up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than Sonos Ace.
  • Up to 35 hours of battery with ANC on.
  • Adaptive EQ tunes the sound based on your fit and movement.

The reviews differ on how close that gets the Ultra to the best alternatives. TechRadar says the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 retain an edge in some aspects of musical sound, though it considers the difference close. What Hi-Fi? finds the Ultra less agile, precise and dynamically expressive than the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Sennheiser HDB 630. These are reviewers’ listening impressions, not laboratory measurements or a fresh head-to-head test.

How effective are noise cancellation and calls?

Reviewers describe the adaptive ANC as strong. TechRadar also finds transparency effective. What Hi-Fi? reports that the headphones reduce ordinary outside hum and rushing noise, but nearby voices and some very high- or low-pitched sounds can still be heard. Aware Mode offers optional Voice Boost, according to What Hi-Fi?.

Call quality is capable, but What Hi-Fi? says the Ace Ultra isolate environmental sound less effectively during calls than the Sony WH-1000XM6. That distinction may matter if you often take calls in noisy places.

What does Headphone Linking do?

Headphone Linking transfers audio from a compatible Sonos speaker or soundbar to the Ace Ultra. What Hi-Fi? reports that the feature works with most current Sonos products running Sonos 27, naming Arc Ultra, Ray, Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra, Sonos Five, Era 100, Era 300, Move 2, Play and Roam 2. Compatibility can change, so check Sonos’s current support information before buying specifically for this feature.

  • Up to 35 hours of battery with ANC on.
  • Adaptive EQ tunes the sound based on your fit and movement.

What Hi-Fi? tested transferring audio from a Beam (Gen 2) through the Sonos app and the headphones’ content key. The feature is the Ultra’s clearest ecosystem advantage, but it does not make a Sonos system a requirement: the headphones can still be used for Bluetooth or wired listening without Sonos speakers.

Sonos CEO Tom Conrad explained in a TechRadar interview why the original Ace could not safely receive this integration: “Unfortunately, Ace doesn’t have that platform, so we couldn’t responsibly bring the feature to Ace without putting your Wi-Fi password, for example, at risk on an open network during configuration.” Conrad said the Ultra’s hardware and system architecture enable secure handling of Wi-Fi credentials and streaming via a Sonos speaker on the network.

Are the Ace Ultra good for movies and travel?

For film watchers with compatible Sonos home-theater gear, the Ultra combines TV Audio Swap, Dolby Atmos playback and head tracking, which TechRadar describes positively. What Hi-Fi? also discusses TrueCinema, which calibrates spatial playback for a room. These features add a stronger case for the Ultra if you want private TV listening as part of a Sonos setup; they are not necessary for ordinary music listening.

At 322g, the Ultra’s cups rotate flat, but the headphones do not fold fully. TechRadar criticizes the carry case, and says the Sony WH-1000XM6 folds more compactly for travel. The Sony is therefore the clearer cited option if packability is a priority.

How does the Ace Ultra compare with alternatives?

Consideration Sonos Ace Ultra Review-based comparison
Music More open, organized and full-bodied than the original Ace. TechRadar says the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 can have an edge in some aspects of musical sound. What Hi-Fi? hears greater precision and dynamics from the Sony and Sennheiser HDB 630.
Noise cancellation Adaptive ANC; reviewers find it strong. Some voices and other environmental sounds remain audible. What Hi-Fi? says the Sony WH-1000XM6 isolates noise better during calls.
Battery 35 hours with ANC enabled, according to product details reported by both reviews. What Hi-Fi? compares this with 30 hours for the Sony WH-1000XM6 with ANC on.
Travel 322g; ear cups rotate flat, but the headphones do not fully fold. TechRadar says the Sony WH-1000XM6 folds more compactly and criticizes the Ace Ultra case.
Sonos and films Headphone Linking, TV Audio Swap and spatial movie features. The cited reviews identify Sonos integration as the Ultra’s distinguishing ecosystem feature.

The 35-hour figure is a published specification, not a battery result measured for this article. What Hi-Fi? also reports a three-hour playback gain from a three-minute charge. Treat that as a reported product claim, not a guarantee of real-world runtime.

Who should buy the Sonos Ace Ultra?

  • Consider them if you own compatible Sonos equipment and want to move speaker or TV audio to headphones, or if you liked the original Ace’s feature set but wanted a more satisfying music presentation.
  • Compare alternatives if your priority is maximum musical precision and dynamics; the cited reviews point to the Sony WH-1000XM6, Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 and Sennheiser HDB 630 as options to consider.
  • Look closely at travel needs if compact folding is important, since the Ace Ultra do not fully fold and TechRadar favors the Sony’s more compact fold.

Overall, the Ace Ultra is a meaningful correction to the original’s less convincing musical presentation, with strong ANC and useful Sonos-specific features. The improvement does not make it the clear winner for every listener: sound detail, dynamics, call-noise isolation and portability remain reasons to compare before choosing.
