The Sonos Ace Ultra is most compelling as a comfortable headphone for private TV listening and people already invested in Sonos. Its sound has divided reviewers: one reported a pronounced change between listening modes, while others found it lively and enjoyable. At the US launch price of $449, comfort and Sonos integration are clearer reasons to buy than a proven claim that it is the best-sounding music headphone for the money.

What is the Sonos Ace Ultra?

Sonos positions the Ace Ultra as a premium wireless over-ear headphone with adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC), spatial audio, Bluetooth 6.0, and Wi-Fi for linking with compatible Sonos products. It launched in the US at $449, with general availability beginning September 29, 2026, according to Sonos’s launch announcement. The live product listing gives the same US price and lists Black, Soft White, Agave, and Sand; regional pricing and availability may differ.

The company specifies a custom 40 mm driver in each ear cup, ten microphones, and a 1,060 mAh lithium-ion battery. The headphones weigh 0.71 lb (0.322 kg), according to Sonos’s US product listing. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of sound or noise cancellation.

How does the sound compare across listening modes?

There is no single verdict across the hands-on reviews. Stan Schroeder’s Mashable review describes a conspicuous tonal shift: he found the sound full and deep with ANC or Aware mode enabled, but flatter and tinny with both modes off. He says EQ adjustments did not eliminate the difference, including over a wired connection, and preferred the wired sound in his own comparison (Mashable). That is one reviewer’s experience, not evidence that every unit or listener will hear the same effect.

  • SPATIAL AUDIO | Enjoy an industry-leading Dolby Atmos experience with dynamic head tracking.
  • LOSSLESS AUDIO | Stream lossless audio over Bluetooth or via USB-C.
  • ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION | World-class ANC neutralizes external sounds for maximum immersion.
  • ALL-DAY COMFORT | Bespoke fit with plush memory foam, soft vegan leather, and a design that suits all head shapes, hairstyles, and accessories.

Other reviewers were more positive about the overall tuning. Scott Plowman at EFTM describes strong, crisp bass and a good soundstage, though he preferred the Sennheiser Momentum 5 in his comparison (EFTM). T3 calls the sound lively and adjustable (T3). Fit, source device, selected mode, and personal preference can all affect what a listener makes of the sound. The available reviews do not include a cited controlled lab measurement that resolves the disagreement.

Is it comfortable for long listening?

Comfort is the most consistent strength reported by the hands-on reviewers. Mashable’s Schroeder calls the Ace Ultra among the most comfortable headphones he has tested. EFTM says the earcups remained comfortable with glasses and notes the clamping force; T3’s reviewer praises the fit after wearing them on a long flight. These are individual impressions, not a guarantee for every head shape, glasses frame, or preferred fit.

What does “Ultra” add for TV and Sonos owners?

The practical distinction is its connection to a compatible Sonos home system. Sonos says TV Audio Swap sends audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to the headphones, so someone can continue listening privately without routing the TV audio through ordinary Bluetooth pairing. The company also describes Headphone Linking, which transfers audio between the headphones and compatible Sonos products using the Content Key on the headphones. Check the product listing for current compatibility before assuming a particular speaker or soundbar supports either feature.

Headphone Linking is listed as an opt-in Early Access feature. Sonos says it requires a compatible speaker, Wi-Fi, and the Sonos app, and that the feature may change during development. That status matters: it is not the same as a fully settled feature available on every Sonos product.

Reviewers report that setup and operation can vary. EFTM successfully moved TV audio between the Ace Ultra and a Beam Ultra, but says the older Playbar in that reviewer’s home did not support the long-press function. T3 reports that Headphone Linking failed on an initial setup attempt, then worked after resets and trying another phone; a colleague’s setup worked immediately. Mashable reports an impressive spatial effect while watching TV, alongside occasional connection drops, handoff failures, pauses, and confusing app navigation in that reviewer’s setup; the reviewer notes that a mesh Wi-Fi network may have contributed. These are reports from particular homes, not proof that the features are generally unreliable.

What are the battery and connection options?

Sonos advertises up to 35 hours of listening with ANC or Aware mode enabled. It also says a three-minute charge from 0% provides up to three hours of playback, and that a full charge can take up to three hours. These are manufacturer claims, not results from a standardized independent battery test. The headphones support wireless Bluetooth and Wi-Fi system linking, as well as wired USB-C and 3.5 mm connections. Confirm source-device and codec compatibility if a particular wireless audio format matters to you.

EFTM lists SBC, AAC, aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive Low Latency support, while noting that the Sennheiser model in its comparison supported more codecs. Codec availability can depend on the playback device and setup, so check compatibility for your specific phone or source rather than treating a codec list as a guarantee of how every device will connect.

What comes in the box, and can parts be replaced?

Sonos lists a travel case, USB-C to USB-C cable, USB-C to 3.5 mm cable, and setup and warranty documentation in the box. The company lists replacement ear cushions and a replacement battery kit separately, and describes both as replaceable. The product information does not establish a particular repair procedure, so do not assume that replacement is a simple user-performed repair.

Who should buy the Sonos Ace Ultra?

  • Consider it if comfort is a priority, you want private TV listening, or you already use compatible Sonos products and will make use of the handoff features.
  • Compare carefully if music sound is your main reason for spending $449. Reviewers differ on the tuning, and one reports a marked change between ANC/Aware and off modes. Listen in your preferred modes before deciding if possible.
  • Check before buying if a specific Sonos soundbar, speaker, codec, or regional price is central to your decision. Compatibility, feature availability, and local listings can vary.

For a comparison with other premium headphones, focus on comfort with your own glasses and fit, sound across ANC/Aware/off modes, noise cancellation, battery and charging, codec support for your devices, spatial TV playback, system integration, and price. The cited reviews compare different products on different criteria; they do not establish one universal best alternative. EFTM lists an Australian recommended retail price of $699 AUD, which is region-specific and not directly comparable to the US launch price.
