The Sonos Ace Ultra is worth its $449 US list price mainly if you already run Sonos speakers or a soundbar and want to move audio between them and your headphones. Its headline feature, headphone linking, works over Wi-Fi with compatible Sonos products, but Sonos still labels it Early Access, and it has real limits. If you are shopping for headphones alone, the case rests on sound, noise cancellation and battery life, and most of the evidence for those comes from Sonos’s own specifications plus one reviewer’s testing.
Sonos announced the Ace Ultra on September 1, 2026, alongside the Beam Ultra, and positioned it above the original Ace, which Sonos lists at $349. The sections below separate what Sonos specifies from what the reviewer observed.
Specifications compared with the original Ace
Sonos’s US product page and its September 2026 announcement form the basis for the figures below. Where Sonos did not publish a comparable number for the original Ace on the Ace Ultra page, the table says so.
| Item | Sonos Ace Ultra | Original Sonos Ace |
|---|---|---|
| US list price | $449 (Sonos product page) | $349 (Sonos product page) |
| Driver | 40 mm, one custom driver in each ear cup (Sonos specification) | Not stated |
| Microphones | 10, used for noise control, calls, Aware mode and TrueCinema (Sonos specification) | Not stated |
| Noise cancellation | Adaptive ANC; Sonos claims up to twice the ANC performance of the original Ace (manufacturer claim) | Serves as the reference point for Sonos’s ANC claim |
| Battery | Up to 35 hours with ANC or Aware mode on (Sonos specification). Sonos also claims a three-minute rapid charge gives up to three hours of playback under its stated conditions | Not stated |
| Replaceable parts | Battery and ear cushions designed to be swapped (Sonos) | Not stated |
| Headphone linking | Early Access, opt-in, Wi-Fi based | Not stated |
The $100 difference in list price is the number most buyers will weigh first. Whether it is justified depends less on the spec sheet than on whether the linking feature fits how you already listen.

Headphone linking: the feature that sets the Ace Ultra apart
Headphone linking moves audio that is already streaming to a compatible Sonos product onto the Ace Ultra over your local Wi-Fi network. Setup runs through the Sonos app on iOS or Android. Sonos describes the feature as Early Access: it is opt-in, provided as-is, and can change during ongoing development. Sonos’s setup guide is at https://support.nextweb-vercel.sonos.com/en/article/set-up-headphone-linking.
What you need before setup
- The Sonos app on iOS or Android.
- A compatible Sonos product already on your system. Sonos lists the Amp, Arc, Beam, Era, Five, Play, Ray, Roam and Move families, subject to listed conditions such as certain products being excluded when used as rear surrounds.
- Wi-Fi coverage that reaches both the Sonos product and the headphones. Weak coverage can interrupt a session.
- Audio that is started in the Sonos app. Supported sources are services initiated in the Sonos app, line-in sources, and a local music library.
What linking cannot do
Sonos’s known-limitations page lists restrictions that matter for everyday use, and it is worth reading before you buy: https://support.sonos.com/en/article/known-limitations-with-headphone-linking.
- Bluetooth and AirPlay audio cannot be moved through headphone linking. The reviewer confirmed that Apple Music played over AirPlay will not link.
- Music started through direct control, which Sonos gives as examples including Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora and Tidal, cannot be swapped this way.
- A linked session is lossy stereo. Lossless and Spatial Audio quality are not supported through linking.
- Only one Ace Ultra can hold an active headphone link session at a time.
In practice, linking is a way to take a room’s Sonos playback with you, not a general-purpose wireless input for your phone or laptop. Those jobs still rely on Bluetooth.
How linking performed in the review
Engadget reviewer Billy Steele reported that linking worked in his setup. His review, published September 22, 2026, carries the subheading “The company’s new headphones can truly be part of a Sonos system.” That is one reviewer’s experience with his own network and Sonos devices, not a controlled test of coverage, latency or session stability. Rank #2
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
TV Audio Swap is a separate feature with its own compatibility list
TV Audio Swap sends TV audio from a compatible Sonos home theater speaker to your Sonos headphones. It is not the same as headphone linking, and the two features have different supported-product lists.
- Supported home theater speakers: Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra and Ray.
- A maximum of two Sonos headphone sets can be used in one TV Audio Swap session.
Check the TV Audio Swap requirements on Sonos’s support page before assuming that a speaker that supports linking also supports TV Audio Swap: https://support.nextweb-vercel.sonos.com/en-us/article/listen-to-your-tv-with-sonos-headphones-tv-audio-swap/. The reviewer reported one occasional audio cut during TV Audio Swap in his setup, which a colleague did not reproduce. Treat that as an observation from one test environment rather than known behavior.
Battery life, charging and replacement parts
Sonos specifies up to 35 hours of listening with ANC or Aware mode on. That is a manufacturer specification. Steele reported testing for 19 hours with ANC on almost the whole time and finishing with 45 percent battery remaining. That is one reviewer’s observation under his own conditions. It is not a standardized battery test, and it does not show a full discharge, so it should not be read as confirming or disputing the 35-hour figure.
Replacement battery and ear cushions
Sonos says the battery and ear cushions are designed to be swapped by the owner. The Sonos US page lists two accessories:
Rank #3
- NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: Effortlessly combines noise cancellation technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
- COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES: Plush over-ear cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your studio headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
- 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
- HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
- ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
- Replacement Battery Kit, $25, with an estimated shipping date of September 29, 2026.
- Ear cushions, $39, with an estimated shipping date of October 9, 2026.
Those shipping dates were estimates on the page when it was accessed, and they may already have passed or changed. Check the current listing before you order, and confirm which model the kit fits. The product page is at https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/sonos-ace-ultra-sand.
Sound, noise cancellation and calls: what the reviewer heard
Steele’s listening notes are subjective, and they are the best available account of performance beyond Sonos’s own claims. He reported:
- More detailed bass than the original Ace.
- Noise cancellation stronger than the original Ace, in line with Sonos’s up-to-twice claim.
- Aware mode that sounds natural rather than processed.
- Above-average call pickup.
He also flagged the price and the fact that the best features depend on owning additional Sonos hardware. No lab measurements of frequency response, noise reduction or microphone performance were published alongside the review, so none of these observations can be compared across products with precision.

Skip it if you mainly listen over Bluetooth, use AirPlay, or stream through apps that Sonos’s direct-control rules exclude from linking. Standalone shoppers should judge the headphones on sound, comfort, noise cancellation and battery life alone, and the evidence for those comes from a single reviewer and manufacturer claims.
The review names the Bose SimpleSync as a nearby private-listening alternative, but it does not provide a head-to-head test against it, or against Sony or Apple headphones. This article therefore does not declare a winner in that group. If you are comparing against those products, check independent measurements before deciding.
Sonos’s own figures, including the 35-hour battery life, the up-to-twice ANC claim and the rapid-charge claim, are specifications or claims. The reviewer’s observations are subjective. No independent laboratory test was identified for this article, so the figures should be treated as what each source states, not as verified performance.
