Sonos Ace Ultra headphone linking lets the headphones pick up audio that is already playing on a compatible Sonos product in your home. The audio moves over your local Wi-Fi network, so you do not have to find the song, album, or playlist again. As of October 7, 2026, Sonos labels the feature Early Access, and its behavior and compatibility can change with software updates. The feature is specific to Sonos Ace Ultra. Sonos says the original Sonos Ace does not support it.

What headphone linking does

Sonos describes the feature in its setup guide this way: “Headphone linking provides you the ability to pull audio already streaming to a compatible Sonos product to Sonos Ace Ultra via the user’s local WiFi network.” In its September 15, 2026 Sonos Community announcement, Sonos Staff member Andrew K put the two main uses in plain terms: “Headphone linking lets you play Sonos audio on your Ace Ultra: start playback right from the Sonos App, or if something’s already playing on a speaker, pull it over to your headphones with a press and hold.”

So there are two ways in. You can start playback in the Sonos app and send it to the headphones, or you can take something already playing on a speaker and pull it to the headphones with the Content Key. The second route is where the feature earns its reputation: you keep the same track and position without digging through a music service again.

What you need before you start

Headphone linking has three basic prerequisites, and all of them must be true at the same time:

#1 Best Overall
Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones - White
  • HEADPHONES | Featuring Dolby Atmos.
  • SPATIAL AUDIO | Enjoy an industry-leading Dolby Atmos experience with dynamic head tracking.
  • LOSSLESS AUDIO | Stream lossless audio over Bluetooth or via USB-C.
  • ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION | World-class ANC neutralizes external sounds for maximum immersion.
  • ALL-DAY COMFORT | Bespoke fit with plush memory foam, soft vegan leather, and a design that suits all head shapes, hairstyles, and accessories.
  • Sonos Ace Ultra is set up in the Sonos app and connected to your phone.
  • At least one compatible Sonos product is connected to the same Sonos system.
  • Your home Wi-Fi is working well enough for the link. Sonos says linking depends on Wi-Fi, and a compatible product must stay active during the session.

Sonos’s setup page lists the following products as supported:

  • Amp
  • Arc
  • Arc SL
  • Arc Ultra
  • Beam (Gen 1)
  • Beam (Gen 2)
  • Beam Ultra
  • Era 100
  • Era 100 SL
  • Era 100 Pro
  • Era 300
  • Five
  • Play
  • Ray
  • Roam
  • Roam SL
  • Roam 2
  • Move
  • Move 2

Some products on this list are marked with an asterisk in Sonos’s documentation, and those are not supported as rear surrounds in a home theater setup. Treat the list as Sonos’s documented compatibility, not a guarantee that every configuration will work. Check the Sonos setup guide for headphone linking before you buy a speaker for this purpose.

How to link Ace Ultra to your system

Sonos documents this setup in the Sonos app on iOS or Android. Start with the headphones themselves: follow Sonos’s guide to setting up Sonos Ace Ultra, and make sure the headphones are connected to your phone. Then:

  1. Open Settings in the Sonos app.
  2. In the Headphones section, select Ace Ultra.
  3. Choose System, then Link to your system.
  4. Follow the prompts. If the app detects a compatible soundbar, the same flow also sets up TV Audio Swap, which is covered later in this article.

Moving audio between a speaker and your headphones

Once setup is complete, the app and the headphones give you two ways to move audio. Sonos’s control guide for the Ace Ultra covers the physical button, the Content Key, and the same behavior applies to the app’s output selector.

From a Sonos speaker to Ace Ultra

Start eligible audio on a compatible product. Then press and hold the Content Key on the headphones. Sonos says the nearest compatible product is the one targeted, and the press it documents lasts up to five seconds. Audio stops on the Sonos product and starts in the headphones. You can also do this from the app: with an active Sonos product selected, choose Ace Ultra as the output. Sonos says an app-initiated swap may take up to five seconds to complete.

From Ace Ultra back to a speaker

Press and hold the Content Key again near the speaker you want to receive the audio. The audio moves from the headphones to that product.

Which audio can move to the headphones

Not every kind of playback qualifies. The source of the audio decides whether the handoff works:

Audio source Eligible for headphone linking?
Music started in the Sonos app Yes
Line-in Yes
Local music library Yes
Sonos Voice Control playback Yes
Music-service playback started through direct control on the service No
Bluetooth No
AirPlay No
Audio started by Alexa or Google Assistant No

In practice, “Can I swap music from a Sonos speaker to Ace Ultra?” has a yes answer only for the eligible sources above. Music that came from a phone over Bluetooth or AirPlay, or a service you opened directly on the speaker, will not transfer.

Limits to plan around

Sonos’s known-limitations page sets the practical boundaries of the feature. Several of them affect how you will use it day to day:

  • Sessions: One Ace Ultra can have one active headphone link session at a time.
  • Wi-Fi: Weak Wi-Fi can cause drops during a session.
  • Product count: A system at the 32-product limit cannot set up the link.
  • Voice control: Voice assistant support is disabled once a session begins, so use the Sonos app or the Content Key for playback control.
  • iOS Live Activity: The Live Activity does not show the linked content.

The Sonos Ace Aux Cable is a separate, optional accessory for wired analog listening, and it does not enable linking. Sonos’s guide to wired audio on Sonos headphones covers that separate use.

Headphone linking and TV Audio Swap are different features

TV Audio Swap is related, because the same setup flow can configure it, but it is not headphone linking. It routes home theater audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to Ace or Ace Ultra. Sonos’s TV Audio Swap guide documents the details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Headphone linking TV Audio Swap
Headphones supported Sonos Ace Ultra only; the original Sonos Ace is not supported Ace or Ace Ultra
What moves to the headphones Eligible audio already playing on a compatible Sonos product Home theater audio from a compatible soundbar
Compatible hardware Products on Sonos’s supported list, excluding rear surrounds marked with an asterisk Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra, and Ray
Headphones per session One Ace Ultra per active link session Up to two Sonos headphone sets
Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking Not supported for linking (linking is lossy stereo) Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking settings are available; Dynamic Head Tracking is disabled while two headphones are connected and re-enabled when one disconnects

If you are watching TV, use TV Audio Swap rather than expecting the Content Key handoff to behave the same way.

Bottom line on the feature’s magic

The convenience is real and specific: you can move eligible audio that is already playing in your home onto Ace Ultra with a press of the Content Key, without restarting it. The trade-offs are equally specific. You get lossy stereo, Wi-Fi-dependent sessions, a short list of eligible sources, and no voice control during a session. Check your speakers and playback source first, and expect the feature to change as Sonos updates Early Access software.
