The Sonic 35th Anniversary Legacy Cartridge releases are new commemorative editions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, not original-era Genesis cartridges. Before buying, check the console compatibility, which game and package you want, whether the special cartridge variant is merely a chance, and the shipping estimate in your order confirmation. iam8bit lists both at $99.99, but price and preorder terms can change.
What is being released for Sonic’s 35th anniversary?
SEGA says the Sonic series began with the 1991 release of Sonic the Hedgehog and marks its 35th anniversary in 2026. Its announcement describes a year of anniversary campaigns and points to the official anniversary site for updates. SEGA also reports 1.77 billion cumulative full-game and free-to-play units and downloads; that figure is not a count of paid game sales. SEGA’s anniversary announcement.
The game releases covered here are two separate, playable Legacy Cartridge products listed by iam8bit and produced in partnership with SEGA. Both listings name Retrotainment Games as manufacturer. One contains Sonic the Hedgehog; the other contains Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The seller describes each as compatible with NTSC Genesis retro consoles. iam8bit’s original-game listing and its Sonic 2 listing.

Will the anniversary cartridge work on your console?
iam8bit states compatibility with “NTSC Genesis retro consoles.” That is the compatibility claim established by the listings. They do not confirm operation on PAL Mega Drive systems or on every Genesis hardware revision.
- If you have an NTSC Genesis, compare your console and setup with the seller’s compatibility wording before ordering.
- If you use a PAL Mega Drive or an unusual hardware revision, ask iam8bit to confirm compatibility before purchase; do not assume the NTSC listing covers it.
What is the “Chaos Emerald energy” cartridge?
Each iam8bit page says one in eight cartridges is infused with “Chaos Emerald energy” and describes a special translucent exterior with an inner glow. This is the seller’s description of a cosmetic special variant, not literal science. The listing does not say buyers can select it, and the stated frequency does not guarantee that any particular order will receive one.

When will your preorder ship?
The product pages list first-wave shipping in Q3 2026, second-wave shipping in Q4 2026, and remaining orders in Q1 2027. iam8bit says shipments are handled in order received and that buyers receive a confirmation email with their timing. Use that confirmation for your order’s expected wave rather than treating the general page schedule as an individual delivery estimate. The page also states, “A limited quantity of cartridges can be manufactured and shipped within 2026.” Recheck the live listing and your confirmation, since the schedule and order terms may change.
