Some retailers are pausing sales of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses over privacy concerns, but the product has not been broadly pulled from stores or banned. On 2 October 2026, Dutch eyewear chain Hans Anders suspended sales in the Netherlands and Belgium. Other retailers continue to sell or demonstrate the glasses, so availability depends on the chain and country.
Why are stores stopping sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Hans Anders said it suspended sales in the Netherlands and Belgium because of growing privacy concerns. The concern is that someone wearing camera-equipped glasses may record people from face level while appearing to use ordinary eyewear. Online-abuse group Offlimits separately urged Meta and Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica to remove the glasses voluntarily until covert recording can be made impossible, according to Reuters.
That is a retailer’s stated rationale and an advocacy group’s request—not evidence that every retailer has reached the same decision. The available information points to a selective withdrawal amid privacy pressure, rather than a general retail retreat.
Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses banned or restricted in some stores?
The Hans Anders decision is a sales suspension in the Netherlands and Belgium, not a general ban. Other retailers continue to sell or demonstrate Meta’s smart glasses. Meta lists Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Ray-Ban stores and other retailers among its sales channels; Best Buy said in June 2026 that Meta Lab demonstrations were planned to expand to more than 50 stores. EssilorLuxottica’s distribution document lists optical locations across the US, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and other markets.

Retail availability is distinct from recording law and venue rules. A retailer may limit or suspend sales locally even where ownership is not prohibited, and a venue can set its own rules about recording. Check the local retailer and venue policy rather than assuming a decision in one country applies elsewhere.
Can smart glasses record people without them knowing?
Smart glasses can put a camera at face level and look like conventional eyewear, which can make recording less apparent to people nearby. Meta says its AI glasses include a capture LED as one of several privacy measures. That is a manufacturer-described safeguard, not a guarantee that everyone nearby will notice a recording or that every privacy concern is resolved.

Ray-Ban says photos and videos captured using AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history, citing protection for people around the wearer. That statement concerns conversation history; it should not be read as a claim that no recording is stored anywhere on the device or elsewhere. Ray-Ban also describes privacy settings in its product FAQ.
Rules depend on location and context. In the United States, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a 2026 bill that would have created penalties for secretly recording people with smart glasses and required a recording indicator on covered wearables from 2028. As AP reported, his veto letter said the bill’s definition was too broad; existing California law already restricts recording without consent in private settings. This does not establish a single rule for all US states or other countries.

Meta told AP: “We’re still in the early days of building this technology and we’re committed to continuing prioritizing privacy as we build.” That is the company’s position; it does not settle questions about consent, enforcement or local law.
Where can I buy prescription Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Ray-Ban says the glasses are available through Ray-Ban.com, official Ray-Ban stores and certified dealers. Meta also names Amazon and major optical retailers among sales channels. Availability varies by geography and by retailer, and a chain that sells the glasses in one market may not carry them in another.

For prescription lenses, check that the retailer is authorized to fit the specific Ray-Ban Meta model and lens configuration. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes authorized prescription-lens support, but the available options should be confirmed with the local certified dealer. Buying the glasses does not address whether recording people is appropriate or permitted in a particular setting.
What to check before buying or using smart glasses
- Privacy signal: Ask how the capture LED works and whether it is visible in the situations where you would use the glasses. Do not assume an indicator is a substitute for asking consent.
- Local rules and venue policy: Recording-consent laws differ by jurisdiction and setting. Workplaces, schools, events and private venues may also have their own restrictions.
- Product fit and support: Confirm the camera and audio features, battery life, phone and app compatibility, warranty, and whether the seller is an authorized dealer.
- Prescription fit: Verify that an authorized optical provider can fit the prescription and lens type you need for the exact model.
- Retail policy: Check whether a local chain sells, demonstrates, limits or suspends the product where you live.
How widespread is the product despite the privacy debate?
AP reported that more than 7 million Meta Ray-Ban AI glasses were sold in 2025. The scale helps explain why retail access and privacy expectations are being debated at the same time: a product can gain broad distribution while individual retailers reassess whether and how they want to sell it.

EssilorLuxottica reported €28.5 billion in consolidated revenue in 2025 and said it operates 18,000 stores in a 2026 distribution document. Those figures describe the company’s scale, not how many locations carry Meta glasses. The same document lists optical locations across multiple regions, while Meta’s retail announcements and Best Buy’s planned demonstrations show that distribution continues outside the Hans Anders markets.
