Some people taking GLP-1 medicines have reported that their fingernails lift or detach. These reports are worth taking seriously, but they do not show that the drugs cause the problem. The current U.S. prescribing information for Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound does not list nail detachment as an adverse reaction, according to a October 2026 Healthline report that reviewed those labels. The strongest dermatology guidance links nail changes to significant weight loss, not to a direct drug effect, and the best-documented hair findings concern hair loss, not nails.
What users are reporting
The reports describe nails that lift from the nail bed or come loose, sometimes with discoloration. Most of what is public comes from individual accounts and from secondary coverage of early findings. The October 2026 Healthline report describes an observational study of GLP-1 users. Its researchers cautioned that the study cannot show the drugs caused nail changes. The same account notes that about half of the GLP-1 users already had nail problems before starting treatment. That finding alone shows why a comparison between users and non-users cannot be read as a risk rate.
Two limits matter here. First, the coverage does not give enough method detail to judge the study’s design, so its figures should be treated cautiously. Second, no reliable prevalence estimate exists for detached fingernails among GLP-1 users. A self-reported report is not a count of how often the problem occurs, and it should not be turned into a percentage. Any number you see for nail detachment should be checked against the original study and its denominator.

Nail detachment is absent from the labeling sources reviewed here, but hair loss is not. The table separates the four effects that get mixed together in coverage.

The Wegovy label’s wording is the closest official statement to the weight-loss link, and it refers only to hair. Keep the two categories apart: a hair finding does not establish a nail effect, and a nail report does not show up in the label.
How weight loss may be involved
The more plausible explanation in dermatology discussions is indirect. AAD lists brittle nails and slower nail growth among patient-reported effects associated with significant weight loss. Tanya Evans, MD, a board-certified dermatologist quoted by Healthline, put it this way: “GLP-1 medications may affect the nails indirectly rather than directly.” That is an expert interpretation, not a proven mechanism, and no study cited here confirms it.

AAD’s broader view is that these medicines affect skin and hair in both directions. Steven Daveluy, MD, FAAD, said: “We now know that GLP-1 medications can have an impact on the skin and hair. There are some skin conditions that may improve after starting a GLP-1, like psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa. There are other conditions, such as hair loss or facial appearance, which may get worse. Understanding these risks and benefits can help you make a more informed choice when thinking about starting a GLP-1.”
Other causes of a lifting nail
A lifting nail has many possible causes, and a change that starts during treatment is not automatically a drug effect. Healthline’s report lists several explanations that a clinician should consider.

Infection
Fungal and bacterial infections can separate the nail from the nail bed. An infection may cause thickening, discoloration, or an odor, and it usually needs a diagnosis before treatment.
Inflammatory nail disorders
Some inflammatory conditions affect the nail unit. Their signs can overlap with those of an infection, so a visual check alone is often not enough to tell them apart.

Nutritional problems
Poor nutrition or low intake of key nutrients can weaken nails. This is relevant to GLP-1 users because reduced appetite can change what and how much a person eats, so the cause may be the diet rather than the medicine.
Injury
Repeated pressure, a blow to the fingertip, or frequent exposure to water and chemicals can loosen a nail. Ask whether any trauma happened before the lifting started.

What to do if your nail is lifting
- Note when the change began, which nail or nails are affected, and whether there was pain, swelling, or discoloration.
- Check whether there was an injury, a new chemical or nail product, or a change in eating habits around the same time.
- Book an appointment with your primary care clinician or a dermatologist. AAD recommends a dermatologist for persistent skin, hair, or nail effects.
- Bring your full medication list and tell the clinician that you take a GLP-1 medicine, how long you have taken it, and how much weight you have lost.
- Do not stop a prescribed medicine because of a nail change without talking to the prescriber first.
- Be skeptical of supplements, manicure products, or home tests marketed as a fix or a diagnosis. The evidence reviewed here does not support them for this symptom.
A dermatologist’s assessment can distinguish a drug-related pattern from an infection, an inflammatory disorder, nutritional problems, or injury. Until that assessment is done, the cause of a lifting nail should be treated as unknown.
