At least four Reddit users reported that the Acer Googlebook 14 repeatedly displayed an “Updating” screen, restarted, and returned to the same screen, according to Android Authority on October 8, 2026. That is a count of reported cases, not a measured failure rate: the number of devices sold and the number of affected owners are unknown. No root cause or confirmed fix has been established in the report.
Which Googlebook is affected, and what is known?
The reports concern Acer’s Googlebook 14, model GP714-91N. Acer describes it as a convertible laptop. Its September 21, 2026 announcement listed North American availability in October 2026 from USD 899; pricing and availability vary by region and may change.

Android Authority attributed the reports to Reddit users. One owner said the loop began after first setup. Another said the recovery screen indicated there was no internet partition and that USB recovery was the only option they could use, but they could not find the recovery files. These are owner accounts, not independently verified diagnoses. The report said Acer had been asked for comment and did not include a response at publication.

What should you do if your Googlebook keeps restarting?
1. Avoid treating the bootloader suggestion as a confirmed fix
Google employee Mishaal Rahman suggested disconnecting USB devices, entering the recovery menu, unlocking and then re-locking the bootloader, and choosing boot from internal disk. A reply in the thread said unlocking and locking failed and the internal-disk option was not available. This is an unverified community troubleshooting suggestion, not an established remedy.
Google’s bootloader guidance says, “Most users don’t need to unlock their Googlebook’s bootloader.” Google warns that unlocking erases device data and disables device security. Unsupported modifications can also cause hardware, software, or security problems and may void the warranty. Contact Acer for device-specific guidance before attempting bootloader changes.
2. Check Google’s recovery instructions and the exact model’s image availability
Google’s general recovery instructions say repeated restarts while a device appears stuck on one screen may mean recovery is needed. They advise trying less invasive steps first, then explain how to prepare recovery media with the Device Recovery Utility on another computer with Chrome.

Google’s instructions call for a USB flash drive with at least 32 GB of capacity. Preparing recovery media erases the USB drive, and recovery permanently erases everything on the Googlebook’s internal drive. Back up data first if you can access it; if the device is stuck in the loop, assume the internal data may be lost if recovery is performed.
The general instructions do not confirm that the utility currently offers an image for the Acer GP714-91N. The reported difficulty finding recovery files makes that model-specific check important: having a suitable USB drive alone does not guarantee that recovery is possible. Confirm that the utility offers the exact model’s image before proceeding.
3. Ask Acer about device-specific support and warranty options
Google directs users to the manufacturer for hardware issues, warranty claims, and device-specific problems, and lists Acer as the manufacturer for Acer Googlebooks. Use Google’s manufacturer-support guidance to find Acer support. Ask Acer whether it has a remedy for the GP714-91N update loop and what warranty or service options apply. The Android Authority report’s last stated position was that Acer had been asked for comment.
