Solus 4.8, named “Opportunity,” was announced on November 29, 2025. Its central change was the move to the Polaris repository epoch, which let the project complete its Usr-Merge transition and make system updates it said could not safely be delivered through the previous repository. The release also replaced the Solus Software Center, removed Python 2 from the repositories, and refreshed four desktop editions.

What is Solus 4.8?

Solus 4.8 is a release of the Solus Linux distribution, available in Budgie, GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce editions. The project called it “Opportunity.” Its November 29, 2025 announcement presented the repository transition as the release’s defining change, alongside updates to desktop software and package management. What does the Polaris repository mean?

Polaris is Solus’s stable default software repository. The name marks a new repository epoch: Solus’s term for the binary version of its package repository. The project explained that an epoch bump creates a new repository from the existing one so systems can pass through a required update point before packages that might otherwise cause breakage are introduced. Why Solus made the change

The transition was tied to Usr-Merge, which moved remaining executables from /bin and /sbin into /usr. Solus needed systems to complete that change before it removed compatibility symlinks. The 4.8 announcement said the new epoch enabled that cleanup and updates to systemd that could not safely be made in the prior repository.

Polaris versus Unstable

Solus documents Polaris as the stable default. Its Unstable repository is intended for package builders and users who want to test packages before they reach stable. The Help Center warns that updating with Unstable enabled may be risky; it is not simply an alternate stable mirror. Consult current Solus guidance before changing repository settings. What changed in package management?

The Software Center was replaced

Solus retired its own Software Center and made GNOME Software or KDE Discover the graphical package-management option, depending on the desktop environment. The project cited the old application’s Python 2 foundation, reliability problems, and lack of Flatpak support. It also said its other tooling had already moved to Python 3, and removing the Software Center allowed Python 2 to be removed from the repositories. This does not establish that every workflow or feature works identically in both replacement applications.

Offline updates and system components

Plymouth, the boot splash screen, became installed by default. Solus connected this to offline updates: an update can be downloaded first and installed on the next boot, rather than while relevant executables or libraries are in use. GNOME Software and KDE Discover supported offline updates in the release, but Solus said the feature was not enabled by default at that time.

The release also moved packages using libgirepository to the 2.0 API, with perl-glib-object-introspection as the stated exception. Solus said it patched libpeas to use the newer API to avoid mixing API versions in one process.

Which desktop editions does Solus 4.8 offer?

The four editions share release-level updates but differ in desktop environment, defaults, and X11 availability. The versions below are those listed in the November 2025 release announcement, not a statement of current package versions.

Edition Release-time desktop version Notable details
Budgie Budgie 10.9.4 Used libpeas-2 and girepository-2.0 while retaining Python applet support; default GTK theme was Pocillo Dark.
GNOME GNOME 49.1 No X11 session by default; the announcement directed users who wanted one to install gnome-session-shell-x11. Defaults included MoreWaita icons, Decibel, Papers, and Ptyxis.
Plasma Plasma 6.5.3; KDE Frameworks 6.19.0; KDE Gear 25.08.3 X11 was not included by default; users wanting it were directed to install plasma-x11.
Xfce Xfce 4.20 Promoted from beta to a full edition alongside Budgie, Plasma, and GNOME.

There is no evidence in the release announcement for a universal best edition or independent performance ranking. Choose based on the desktop workflow and defaults you prefer, and whether you need an X11 session included out of the box.

What versions shipped with Solus 4.8?

The announcement listed Firefox 145.0.1, LibreOffice 25.2.6, and Thunderbird 140.5.0 as shared default applications. It reported Linux kernel 6.17.8, with kernel 6.12.58 available for users needing an LTS kernel, and Mesa 25.2.6. Systemd was updated to 257.10 from 254, with the homed and userdb modules enabled. These are release-time figures from November 2025; check Solus’s current package information for versions available now. Solus 4.8 Released

How do you get Solus 4.8?

The release page directs readers to download the edition they want. If you install from an ISO, a USB flash drive can be used to create bootable installation media, but the release announcement does not specify a minimum drive capacity or say that USB is required for every installation method. Follow the current installation instructions for the chosen edition.
