A research team has developed a removable, sunlight-powered insert for a standard outdoor trash-bin lid that targets acetic acid, a sharp-smelling compound produced as food decomposes. In tests reported by the American Chemical Society (ACS), it remained active for more than 40 days in natural sunlight with decaying food waste. It is a research prototype, not a verified consumer product.
How the solar-powered insert is designed to work
The prototype sits in a transparent, gas-permeable housing attached to a bin lid. A lens concentrates natural sunlight onto a catalyst made of manganese oxide modified with lithium. The catalyst adsorbs volatile organic acids and, when illuminated, promotes the breakdown of acetic acid.
That approach differs from simply trapping odor molecules. The researchers’ aim is to treat a source of food-waste odor inside the bin. “We wanted to address the odor at its source, inside the bin itself,” corresponding author Jinlong Wang said in the ACS announcement.
What the tests show—and what they do not
Outdoor test with food waste
ACS reports that the team tested the insert with decaying fruit, bread, and wine. In natural sunlight, the catalyst continuously broke down the acetic acid generated during decomposition for more than 40 days. That is the reported duration of this outdoor test, not a product warranty or evidence that every garbage odor was removed.

Separate laboratory comparison
In simulated-sunlight laboratory experiments, lithium-modified manganese oxide performed better at breaking down acetic acid than unmodified manganese oxide or activated carbon, according to ACS. The announcement also reports good performance in humid conditions. It does not provide a numerical removal efficiency or enough detail to extend that comparison to all odor compounds or real-world retail filters.
How it compares with activated-carbon bin filters
Activated-carbon filters are an existing under-lid option. ACS describes them as containing odors, while the experimental catalyst is intended to break down acetic acid under light. The two approaches and their evidence are not interchangeable.

The laboratory result does not show that the prototype beats every carbon filter in everyday use. ACS’s announcement does not establish that the experimental insert is sold or compatible with any particular bin.

As food decomposes, it can release volatile compounds, including acetic acid, which contributes a sharp, sour odor. The prototype addresses that specific compound; the available report does not show that it eliminates every smell from mixed household waste.

If you want to try an odor-control accessory today, activated-carbon trash-can filters are a related existing category, not the solar catalyst described above. Before choosing one, check:
- Whether its mounting style fits your lid or bin.
- Whether the listing specifies compatibility with your bin’s size or design.
- How often the filter needs replacement.
- What odor-control claims the seller makes and what evidence supports them.
Study details
ACS announced the study on October 1, 2026, identifying the paper as “Ionic-Covalent Bond-Mediated Electron-Rich Lattice Oxygen for Solar-Driven Acetic Acid Abatement,” published in Environmental Science & Technology (DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.6c07573).
