For payments, Solana and Ethereum mainnet differ in how they charge for transactions and how they confirm them. Solana’s fee is denominated in SOL and includes a base charge per signature; Ethereum mainnet charges for computation in gas, paid in ETH. Solana documents roughly 400 ms block times, while Ethereum uses 12-second slots—but block production or seeing a transaction included is not the same as protocol finality. Ethereum Layer 2 networks add another option, with costs and withdrawal behavior that vary by network.

There is no evidence here to declare one chain the universal payment winner. The useful comparison is the same payment, on a named network, at the same time, with the fee, confirmation threshold, and operational requirements made explicit.

Which is cheaper for payments?

There is no fixed fiat-price answer. Protocol fees are charged in different units, and their cash value changes with token prices and network conditions. A fair comparison requires pricing the same payment on Solana mainnet, Ethereum mainnet, or a specifically named Ethereum L2 at the same observation time.

Solana fees

Solana’s fee has a base component and may include a prioritization fee. The documentation states a base rate of 5,000 lamports per signature; that is a protocol-unit figure, not a dollar quote. The optional priority fee depends on the configured compute-unit price and requested compute-unit limit, so the requested limit matters—not only the compute actually used. Fees are charged whether a transaction succeeds or fails. See Solana’s fee overview and fee structure.

Ethereum mainnet fees

Ethereum measures computation in gas, and users pay in ETH. The total fee is the gas used multiplied by the base fee plus any priority tip. The base fee varies with recent block demand and is burned; the tip incentivizes validators. Ethereum.org uses 21,000 gas for a simple ETH transfer as an illustration. That is a quantity of gas, not a current cash price, and a smart-contract payment can use a different amount. See Ethereum’s gas and fee documentation.

Lamports and gas are not comparable units. To compare actual costs, specify the asset transferred, the network, the transaction type, the observation time, and the fiat conversion used. For an L2, account for its user-facing fee and how charges for the operator and Ethereum data settlement are handled.

Is Solana faster than Ethereum for payments?

Solana’s documentation describes block times of about 400 ms. Ethereum proof-of-stake uses 12-second slots, with 32 slots in an epoch. Those are different protocol timing measures; neither alone tells a merchant when it is safe to treat a payment as settled.

Inclusion, confirmation, and finality are different

A transaction may be observed or included before it has reached the network’s stronger finality threshold. Solana describes finality in terms of nodes representing two-thirds of stake sharing a common root. Ethereum finality relies on supermajority links between checkpoints. These definitions are not equivalent to a claim that every payment settles in a particular number of milliseconds or seconds. See Solana’s market documentation and terminology, and Ethereum’s proof-of-stake documentation.

For a reversible, low-value purchase, a merchant might choose to act on an early confirmation; a high-value or difficult-to-reverse payment may justify waiting for stronger settlement assurance. The right threshold depends on the payment’s risk and the application’s policies, not just the chain’s headline block time.

How Ethereum Layer 2 networks change the comparison

An Ethereum L2 is not simply Ethereum mainnet with a uniformly lower fee or faster confirmation. Rollups execute transactions outside mainnet and publish data to Ethereum, spreading data costs across batches. The design of each network affects fee components, security properties, and the route for withdrawing assets.

Optimistic and ZK rollups

Optimistic rollups use challenge or fraud-proof mechanisms; ZK rollups publish validity proofs. Optimistic-rollup withdrawals can involve a challenge period, although a liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee. The precise user experience and security model depend on the specific network. Ethereum’s documentation explains scaling, optimistic rollups, and ZK rollups.

Before comparing an L2 with Solana, name the L2 and check its fee components, data-publication model, token and wallet support, and bridge or withdrawal path. A single generic “Ethereum L2” price or speed figure would conceal meaningful differences.

What matters when a payment product goes live?

A low protocol fee does not guarantee a transaction will be produced reliably or that a payment system will have low total operating cost. Production infrastructure and application choices matter alongside the chain’s fee mechanism.

Transaction landing and RPC service

Solana’s production guidance says public RPC endpoints are rate-limited and have no service-level agreement. It also warns that mainnet transaction landing requires suitable transaction setup and that priority fees can matter when users compete for block space. Production deployments should evaluate RPC infrastructure, transaction freshness, compute-budget and priority-fee settings, and recovery behavior. Mainnet fees require real SOL; devnet behavior is not a substitute for production conditions. See Solana’s production-readiness guidance.

Stablecoin workflows and business requirements

Solana’s finance documentation covers sending, accepting, and reconciling stablecoin payments. A payment product must also decide which assets to accept, how custody and compliance work, how refunds and accounting are handled, and how conversion and liquidity are obtained. Protocol mechanics alone do not answer those operational questions. See Solana Finance documentation.

How to choose between them

Compare candidate networks against the actual payment flow rather than relying on a chain-wide label such as “cheap” or “fast.” These criteria are a practical decision framework, not a head-to-head benchmark.

  • Cost: Price the same specified payment in the same fiat currency at the same time, including the token transferred and network used.
  • Confirmation policy: Distinguish user-visible inclusion from the settlement assurance your application requires.
  • Wallet and asset fit: Check whether customers can use the required tokens and wallets, and how they obtain the network’s fee token.
  • Production reliability: Assess RPC uptime and support, transaction landing, and recovery when a transaction fails or is delayed.
  • L2-specific trade-offs: For each Ethereum L2, examine its data-publication and security model, operator charges, and bridge or withdrawal experience.

The official technical sources cited here explain protocol mechanics, but they do not establish comparable merchant adoption, payment volume, total payment-processing cost, or fiat off-ramp quality for both chains. Those are separate questions that require current, comparable evidence.
