SoftDetective, a Windows utility from WinAbility, is designed to show file, folder, and Registry changes associated with an app installation or removal. It can make an installer’s less-visible activity easier to inspect, but a report is an observation—not proof that an app is unsafe, nor a guarantee that every system change was captured.
What SoftDetective monitors
WinAbility says SoftDetective can report files and folders that are created, modified, renamed, or deleted, including changes in file size and timestamps. It can also report Registry keys that are added, deleted, or updated. These are the publisher’s described capabilities, not independently verified coverage of every installer or Windows change. WinAbility’s SoftDetective page describes the features.
The publisher says the tool can launch a program under monitoring or observe a process that is already running. It also supports monitoring an uninstall workflow. For some changes, WinAbility says SoftDetective saves original copies of deleted files and modified text files in a temporary folder for inspection or restoration. Reports can be exported as text or HTML. Those details are vendor claims; confirm what a particular report contains before relying on it to restore anything.
How to monitor an installation
A practical workflow described in a September 27, 2026 XDA article by Yash Patel is to select an installer, start monitoring, complete the installation normally, stop monitoring, and open the resulting report. The article describes leaving “Run as Administrator” checked for the installer and opening a report from the system tray. This is a personal walkthrough, not a controlled test or a guarantee that the same controls appear in every version. Read the XDA walkthrough.
#1 Best Overall
- Select the installer: Choose the setup file for the program you intend to install.
- Start monitoring: Begin the capture before running setup so the report can include activity during installation.
- Install normally: Complete the installer’s steps. The XDA walkthrough left “Run as Administrator” checked; whether that is appropriate depends on the installer and your Windows account.
- Stop and review: Stop monitoring after setup and open the report. The walkthrough says it accessed the report from the tray and reviewed file, folder, and Registry sections.
To observe removal instead, the XDA walkthrough says SoftDetective can select an installed program from the Windows Uninstall list for uninstall monitoring. Treat the resulting changes as a record of what the tool observed during that workflow—not as a definitive list of everything the application ever added or as a recommendation to delete items manually.
What the report can—and cannot—tell you
A report can help answer practical questions such as where setup wrote files, which folders or Registry entries changed, and what activity coincided with the installation. That is useful visibility when comparing an application’s behavior with what you expected. It does not by itself identify whether a change is harmful, explain why a component was added, or establish that all relevant activity was captured.
Rank #2
- Use it as an observation aid: Review unfamiliar changes in context, including the app’s purpose and installation choices.
- Do not treat a changed item as automatically removable: Files and Registry entries may be shared or required by Windows or other software.
- Do not assume a clean-looking report proves nothing changed: The available product description does not establish capture completeness or accuracy across all systems and installers.
- Use saved originals cautiously: WinAbility describes copies of some deleted or modified files, but the description does not guarantee that every change is reversible.
Windows support and cost
WinAbility lists Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, and describes SoftDetective as free. The publisher page does not provide an independently verified compatibility test matrix or establish current release details, so check the product page for the version and requirements applicable to your PC before installing it.
How it differs from other monitoring tools
Other utilities approach installation tracking differently. Their descriptions are not a head-to-head test, and the available information does not establish which captures changes most completely or is easiest to use.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When SoftDetective is a reasonable choice
SoftDetective is a reasonable starting point if you want a dedicated Windows utility for inspecting changes associated with one installation or removal, and its publisher-listed Windows support and free price fit your needs. If you need deeper operational logging or a removal workflow tied to a saved trace, compare the respective tools’ current documentation and decide which workflow matches your task. The descriptions above do not establish comparative completeness, accuracy, or ease of use.
