A conventional soft starter is generally designed to start an AC motor by controlling its voltage during startup. A DC control-supply rating does not mean the same starter can switch or soft-start a DC motor’s power circuit. For a DC motor, choose a controller or starter specifically rated for that motor and supply.

The right choice depends on the motor, load, starting duty and required control. A soft starter can reduce the shock of starting—and may provide soft stopping if the model supports it—but it does not provide the continuous speed control of a variable-frequency drive (VFD).

What a soft starter does

An AC motor soft starter controls voltage during startup to reduce the initial inrush current and mechanical stress. Some models also control stopping; confirm that feature on the exact model rather than assuming every soft starter offers soft stop.

One three-phase design described by Renesas phase-cuts two phases, then gradually removes the cut; relays may bypass the thyristors once the motor is running. That is an example of a particular design, not a description of every product’s internal topology.

Can a soft starter work with a DC motor?

Do not infer DC motor compatibility from the words “AC/DC” on a control-supply specification. The control supply powers the starter’s control electronics; it does not establish that the power stage can switch a DC motor.

For example, Danfoss lists a 24 V AC or DC control-voltage option for its MCD 201/202 family while specifying AC motor power ratings. That control-voltage option is not evidence that the family is designed for a DC motor power circuit. Phoenix Contact lists DC motor starters separately from speed starters that have soft-start functionality.

For a DC motor, use a product whose documentation explicitly covers the motor and DC supply. Verify its rated voltage and current, load type, ramping behavior and protection features. Do not connect a DC power circuit to an AC soft starter based only on an AC/DC control-supply label.

Soft starter versus VFD

Choose between them according to what the motor must do after it starts. Eaton and Danfoss describe soft starters as appropriate when control is needed mainly for starting and, where supported, stopping. A VFD is the relevant option when the application needs continuous speed control while running. A soft starter should not be treated as a speed regulator after startup.

Neither option is universally better. The application guide from Danfoss recommends considering both initial investment and running costs; the requirements of the motor and load determine which option is suitable.

How to size an AC motor soft starter

Start with the motor nameplate and the actual duty, not a headline rating for a product family. Danfoss’s application guide says to select a starter rated for at least the motor’s full-load current at the application’s starting duty, and its operating guidance instructs installers to configure the motor full-load current to match the motor.

DC Motor Speed Controller 12V 36V 48V 30A with Overload Protector Slow Start Adjustable for Permanent Magnet Brushed Motor
  • Industrial Grade: DC motor speed controller is an industrial grade product featuring high stability for long-term use in demanding applications like manufacturing and automation systems.
  • Easy Connection: Motor speed controller switch board has gains barrier terminal blocks making wire connection easy to conduct for quick and secure installation in control panels.
  • Protection: PWM motor controller features a slow start function that protects the speed controller and DC motor from instantaneous large current when powering on.
  • Locked Rotor Protection: Motor speed regulator is capable of limiting large current (maximum 30A) caused by locked rotor, protecting the motor from damage instead of cutting off power.
  • Low Voltage Protection: Speed control switch module provides low-voltage protection when powered by storage battery, preventing damage caused by over-discharge of the battery.
  • Identify whether the power circuit is AC or DC, and record the phase and supply voltage.
  • Record the motor’s nameplate full-load current and check it against the starter’s rating for the required starting duty.
  • Check starting current, acceleration or start time, starts per hour, operating cycle and load severity against the product’s rating method.
  • Confirm required functions on the exact model, including soft stop, overload protection, bypass, communications or braking.
  • Check enclosure, environment, cooling, installation conditions and applicable electrical-code requirements in the current product manual.

A family rating is not a universal approval for every motor or duty. Pumps, conveyors, fans, mixers and compressors are examples of applications Danfoss associates with its MCD 201/202 family; that list does not establish that every model suits every machine in those categories.

Example: Danfoss MCD 201/202 family

Danfoss’s undated product page, accessed in 2026, describes this compact AC motor soft-starter family as serving motors up to 110 kW. It lists 3 × 200–575 V and 7.5–110 kW (200 A). These are manufacturer family specifications, not independent performance findings or a substitute for checking the selected model’s rating and duty.

  • Scope of application: Used for high-power or Class A power amplifier power input, high-power isolation transformer or other high-start current machine applications. The use power is suitable within 5000W.
  • The maximum operating current of 30A is much larger than the 7.62mm pitch. The step-down capacitor is an AV capacitor and can be a reverse protection diode for the relay.
  • This board does not require auxiliary power supply, and only has 2 wiring terminals, one for power input and one output for load, which is very convenient to use.
  • Note: The soft start board is only used to limit the start-up current to prevent shock, and it is powered on when it is turned on.

Safety and installation

A soft starter is not a personnel-isolation device. Danfoss’s VLT Soft Starter MCD 600 Operating Guide, whose document footer is dated 2020.12, warns that a motor can start at any time when the soft starter is connected to AC mains, a DC supply or load sharing. The guide states: “The soft starter is not a safety device and does not provide electrical isolation or disconnection from the supply.”

Plan isolation and circuit protection through appropriate equipment and an external safety system; do not rely on the starter’s start/stop function to make equipment safe for service. Installation and servicing must follow the exact product manual and local requirements. This overview is not a complete installation design; have a qualified electrical professional assess the motor, load and site.
