Sodium-ion batteries are moving from announcements toward commercial deployment, especially in cold-weather vehicles and stationary storage. But “lower-cost” describes their potential, not a proven price advantage: today’s low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries remain cheaper in most applications, while sodium-ion batteries store less energy per kilogram and are made at far smaller scale.
Are sodium-ion batteries cheaper than lithium-ion?
Not across the board. Sodium is abundant, and sodium-ion batteries avoid lithium and graphite, which could reduce some material costs and diversify supply. But a battery’s delivered cost also depends on its chemistry, energy density, manufacturing yield, production scale, and intended use. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says current low-cost LFP retains a cost advantage in most applications; a cheaper raw material alone does not make a cheaper battery pack. IEA, February 2026

IRENA’s 2025 technology brief gives historical estimates of USD 80–105/kWh for sodium-ion cells and USD 90–125/kWh for packs in 2022. For comparison, it cites lithium-ion costs of USD 52–81/kWh for cells and USD 75–104/kWh for packs in April 2024. These figures come from different dates, so they are not a like-for-like current price comparison. IRENA also reports that some manufacturers expect sodium-ion cell costs could fall to USD 40/kWh at scale, while noting that long-term competitiveness against LFP remains uncertain. IRENA, 2025

Scale is part of the cost question. The IEA reports that sodium-ion cell manufacturing capacity is just over 1% of lithium-ion capacity. Announced sodium-ion projects for 2030 amount to about 7% of committed lithium-ion capacity for that year. Announced capacity is not the same as factories operating at full output or batteries reaching customers.

- Perfect Match – CSI’s 12V Sodium-Ion Battery is the perfect match for heavy-duty and medium-duty truck, vehicle, RVs, marine, and trolling applications. With super powerful cranking amps -1,500 CCA, and high reserve capacity, it is the best option for the industry’s leading engines: Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Paccar, Mack and Volvo engines.
- Highly accurate BMS – CSI’s 12V Sodium-Ion Battery has a highly accurate BMS which provides thermal management, over-charge, over-discharge, short-circuit, over-current protection and energy equalization protection. This prevents battery damage and ensures battery health.
- Easy Installation – No guesswork. CSI’s 12V sodium-ion batteries are 60% lighter than lead-acid or AGM batteries. There’s no need for heavy weight! This makes it easier to lift and install. This also allows for increased vehicle range.
- Jump Start Button – CSI’s Group 31 Sodium Ion starter batteries have a jump start button that will allow the battery to operate below its programmed State of Charge (SOC) limit, so that the battery can supply DC voltage to restart applications.
What are the main trade-offs?
| Decision factor | What the evidence says | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Energy per kilogram | The IEA reports cells reaching up to 175 Wh/kg for sodium-ion, 205 Wh/kg for LFP, and 255 Wh/kg for nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion batteries. | When a vehicle needs to travel far without adding battery weight, lithium-ion has an advantage. Volumetric energy density is another constraint where space is limited. |
| Cold-weather operation | The IEA says sodium-ion performs significantly better at low temperatures than lithium-ion, particularly LFP. | Cold climates are a promising niche, though the practical benefit depends on the specific cell and system. |
| Material inputs | Sodium-ion avoids lithium and graphite, but near-commercial layered-oxide versions may use nickel and manganese. | It diversifies some material needs; it does not eliminate dependence on critical minerals. |
| Production ecosystem | Nearly all current sodium-ion manufacturing capacity is in China. China represents more than 95% of the IEA’s installed-plus-announced 2030 pipeline. | More production is needed, and geographic concentration remains a supply-chain risk. |
In the IEA’s illustrative average-SUV comparison, sodium-ion offers up to 350 km of range, compared with 400–600 km for lithium-ion under average-weather assumptions. These are scenario and chemistry comparisons, not guaranteed ranges for every vehicle. The IEA also reports that LFP packs were more than 40% cheaper on average per kWh than NMC packs in 2025; that comparison is between two lithium-ion chemistries, not sodium-ion and LFP. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026
Are sodium-ion batteries better in cold weather?
They can be. The IEA identifies low-temperature performance as a significant sodium-ion advantage over lithium-ion, particularly LFP. That makes the chemistry potentially useful where cold reduces the performance of conventional battery systems.
CATL, a battery manufacturer, says its Naxtra passenger-vehicle battery retains 90% usable power at −40°C. It also claims an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, a range of 500 km, and more than 10,000 cycles for the product. These are CATL’s specifications and claims for its battery, not independently established results for sodium-ion batteries as a category. CATL, April 2025

In its February 2026 announcement about a vehicle developed with Changan, CATL reported up to 175 Wh/kg and a pure-electric range exceeding 400 km for the announced configuration. Those figures, too, are company-reported product claims rather than universal performance benchmarks. CATL, February 2026
What are sodium-ion batteries used for?
The strongest near-term cases are uses where low-temperature performance, material diversification, or a less demanding range requirement matters more than maximizing energy in a compact, lightweight pack. The IEA identifies several possible applications:
- Short-range electric vehicles: A lower range requirement can make the lower energy density easier to accommodate.
- Urban commercial fleets: Vehicles with predictable routes and regular depot charging may be better suited than those expected to cover long distances between charges.
- Two- and three-wheelers: These can be practical targets where pack size and vehicle range allow the trade-off.
- Forklifts and other equipment: Industrial uses may value operating characteristics and material diversification over maximum driving range.
- Stationary storage: Grid and other fixed installations are less constrained by battery weight than vehicles.
- Hybrid battery packs: A system combining different battery types could use sodium-ion where its cold-weather performance is useful, while another chemistry supplies energy density.
These are application categories, not confirmation that a sodium-ion product is available for every vehicle, piece of equipment, or storage project.

Commercial deployment is beginning, but availability depends on location and timing. In February 2026, CATL said it and Changan had unveiled a mass-production passenger vehicle equipped with sodium-ion batteries, with market arrival targeted for mid-2026. That was a stated target; the announcement alone does not establish where the vehicle is sold or whether deliveries have begun. CATL, February 2026

International deliveries were scheduled for June 2027. The company reported a three-year, 60 GWh order with HyperStrong, signed in April 2026. Do sodium-ion batteries replace lithium?
Not as a general replacement on current evidence. Sodium-ion is better understood as an additional battery option for applications where its particular strengths outweigh its lower energy density and smaller production base. Lithium-ion remains better suited to many weight- and range-sensitive designs, and mature LFP has a cost advantage in most applications today.
Sodium-ion also does not remove every mineral or supply-chain concern. Some near-commercial sodium-ion chemistries use nickel and manganese, and manufacturing is heavily concentrated in China. Its potential benefit is diversification away from some lithium-ion inputs, not independence from global battery supply chains. IEA, February 2026
The IEA says: “For sodium-ion batteries to compete on a more equal footing, either sustained higher lithium prices or technological advances that significantly improve the energy density of sodium-ion batteries would be required.” IEA, February 2026
