Socionext’s October 2023 announcement described a planned 32-core CPU chiplet using Arm Neoverse Compute Subsystems (CSS) and TSMC 2nm technology. It was a proof-of-concept development project for data-center and network infrastructure—not a shipping processor. Socionext targeted engineering samples for the first half of 2025, but public sources reviewed through September 30, 2026 do not confirm whether those samples were delivered, delayed or cancelled.

What Socionext announced

On October 18, 2023, Socionext said it would collaborate with Arm and TSMC to develop a power-optimized, 32-core CPU chiplet based on TSMC’s 2nm process technology. The project was described as a proof of concept using Arm Neoverse CSS. Socionext’s announcement and its English press release set out the design intent and schedule.

The 32-core count and 2nm process were announced design specifications, not independently measured results. The release did not publish benchmarks, power figures, efficiency gains, production volumes or customer deployments for this specific chiplet.

How the proposed chiplet design works

A chiplet is a smaller processing component designed to be packaged alongside other components rather than building every function into one large monolithic die. Socionext said one or more CPU chiplets could be combined in a package with input/output (I/O) and application-specific chiplets.

#1 Best Overall

That modular arrangement was presented as a way to support different platform configurations and potentially upgrade a package as new chiplets become available. This was Socionext’s design rationale; the announcement did not report customer products or upgrades that demonstrated those benefits.

Who the 32-core chiplet was intended for

The companies named infrastructure workloads rather than consumer PCs or phones. Socionext identified these target markets:

Computer Processor, Microchip, Technology T-Shirt, Men, Black, 3X-Large
  • Computer Hardware Technology design. Computer processor design, great for IT computer technicians, software engineers, or any engineer that deals with microprocessors. This funny computer scientist shows a CPU or circuit board.
  • CPU Electronic Chip Circuit Board Gift. Ideal for computer science students, software developers, administrators and all who like to work with computers.
  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
  • Hyperscale data-center servers
  • 5G and 6G infrastructure
  • Data processing units (DPUs)
  • Network-edge applications

These were intended markets, not confirmed deployments. The announcement did not identify a customer or a commercial product incorporating the chiplet.

Did Socionext deliver the engineering samples?

Socionext’s 2023 release targeted engineering samples for the first half of 2025. That target date has passed, but the public company material reviewed through September 30, 2026 did not confirm delivery, a revised schedule or cancellation. The absence of a public update does not establish that samples were not delivered.

  • Thermal conductivity > 6.5 W/m-k.
  • Thermal resistance 0.0016 k-in/W.
  • Working Temperature: -30/280°c.
  • Each pack includes 1 gram high performance thermal paste/grease.
  • Can be applied for cooling the interface of cooler heatsink and Computer Processor CPU GPU IC Chips, etc.

Socionext’s 2026 announcements describe other work, not a status update for this particular 2nm project:

  • On March 27, 2026, Socionext described Flexlets capabilities developed with Arm Total Design, including custom memory and I/O expansion chiplets. The company discussed data-center, AI, physical-AI and automotive applications in that separate announcement: Socionext’s March 2026 release.
  • On July 1, 2026, Socionext announced a distinct compute-chiplet development project using TSMC A14 technology and said it planned a multi-core device tape-out in September 2026: Socionext’s A14 announcement.

Neither announcement establishes what happened to the 2023 2nm engineering-sample target. Socionext’s April 2026 investor presentation and company news index likewise do not verify the sample status.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

The collaboration was a development effort bringing together Socionext’s chip design work, Arm’s Neoverse CSS technology and TSMC’s process technology. It signaled an intended route to configurable CPU chiplets for infrastructure customers, but it did not establish a finished processor, commercial availability or measured power and performance.

In particular, “power-optimized” was a project description, not a published test outcome. No test method or measured efficiency result accompanied the announcement, so it is not possible to quantify how the proposed chiplet would compare with another processor.
