Parental controls and conversation are not competing ways to keep kids safer online. Controls can limit access, time, contact, or sharing; open conversations help children understand the rules and feel able to ask for help. Use both, set boundaries that fit your child and family, and revisit them as your child gains responsibility.
What parental controls can—and cannot—do
Controls can help manage several parts of a child’s digital life: content access, screen time, contacts or chat, activity monitoring, privacy and security settings, and purchases. They may be available at different levels, including a home Wi-Fi network, a device, an operating system, or an individual app. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends checking the options across the networks, devices, and apps your child uses, rather than assuming one setting covers everything. AAP: Set Parental Controls for Safer Media Use
A control is a tool for managing access or use, not a guarantee against online harm. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes options such as approving a child’s chat friend list or preventing online communication, but its examples are not a comparative evaluation of products or proof that any one tool provides comprehensive protection. Why conversation and boundaries matter too
Settings cannot explain why a family has a rule or help a child make a sound decision when a situation falls outside that rule. AAP recommends explaining controls openly, involving older children in decisions, and reviewing settings over time. It frames controls as a chance to teach safe, responsible technology use—not as a substitute for communication. AAP: Set Parental Controls for Safer Media Use

Keep conversations frequent and nonjudgmental. Ask what your child sees and does online, who they interact with, and how those experiences make them feel. If they tell you about something upsetting, listen before reacting. The AAP suggests talking openly about dangerous challenges, sensitive events, and mean comments, and asking what the child did and how they felt. AAP: Your Child’s Online World: Talk Frequently About It
Boundaries work best when they reflect the child’s maturity, needs, past media habits, sleep, activities, and the family’s expectations. The AAP’s guidance for early adolescents supports giving them input into family rules and decisions. It does not establish one universal age at which every child should begin using social media.

Choose controls and rules together
- Start with a conversation. Discuss what your child wants to do online, what concerns you, and what expectations make sense for your family. The FTC recommends starting with family rules and expectations before considering controls.
- Map where the settings live. Check the home network, phones, tablets, computers, TVs, gaming devices, and the specific apps or services your child uses. Look for options covering content, time, contacts, privacy, monitoring, and purchases.
- Explain what you enable. Tell your child what a control limits or monitors and why. AAP recommends talking openly and honestly about the controls you choose.
- Invite age-appropriate input. Make decisions with older children rather than simply announcing rules. Talk about who they may chat with, how to report problematic posts, and whether purchases are allowed—especially when setting up a new account.
- Review and adjust. Revisit settings and boundaries as your child demonstrates responsibility or needs a different level of support. A family media plan can help structure conversations about limits and balance; tracking screen time may also reveal which activities are being crowded out. AAP: Create a Family Media Plan
Consider readiness before a first smartphone or account
When deciding whether and when to get a child a smartphone, the AAP advises considering the child’s readiness for the responsibility and their past media patterns. For a new account, it recommends using the most secure available parental controls and privacy settings, and discussing approved contacts, how to report problematic posts, and purchase rules. These are factors for a family decision, not a one-size-fits-all starting-age rule. AAP: Cell Phones: What Age?
Check built-in and free options first
In a June 2026 article, the FTC identifies Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link, and Microsoft Family Safety as free tools for limits, restrictions, and activity information. They are examples, not a ranking or guarantee of coverage across every device and service. Features and instructions can change, so check each provider’s current guidance and confirm which settings apply to the devices and accounts your family uses. FTC: How To Protect Your Child Online
