There is no single social media image size: use the dimensions and aspect ratio for the specific placement—feed post, Story or Reel, cover, ad, or video thumbnail. As a practical starting point, Instagram portrait feed posts are commonly exported at 1080 × 1350 px (4:5), while vertical Stories and Reels use 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). YouTube’s official recommendation for a standard video thumbnail is 3840 × 2160 px (16:9). These values do not guarantee identical display across devices; platforms may crop or render the same upload differently.

Hootsuite’s values are useful export references, not a guarantee that a platform will preserve the exact crop. For Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and TikTok, these are third-party reference values rather than current platform-owned specifications. The currently available official guidance cited here is for YouTube. Check the destination platform’s live requirements before a campaign, especially for paid placements.
Instagram post size and Story or Reel dimensions
For a common Instagram portrait feed export, use 1080 × 1350 px at 4:5. Square posts use 1080 × 1080 px, and landscape posts use 1080 × 566 px (about 1.91:1), according to Hootsuite’s September 2026 guide. Stories and Reels use a vertical 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) reference frame.
Do not assume a feed image and a vertical Story or Reel will share the same crop. Compose for the placement and keep text, faces, and logos away from edges and interface overlays. Preview the result in the app or publishing workflow before posting.

Facebook image dimensions and cover photo size
Hootsuite’s reference dimensions for Facebook are 1080 × 566 px for a landscape image, 1080 × 1080 px for a square image, and 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) for Stories and Reels. Its cover-photo reference is 851 × 315 px. Cover display can vary by device and by Page or profile context, so keep important content away from the outer edges and inspect the displayed crop.
X image sizes and header dimensions
For X, Hootsuite lists 1280 × 720 px (16:9) for a landscape image, 720 × 1280 px (9:16) for a vertical image, and 720 × 720 px (1:1) for a square image. Its X cover-photo reference is 1500 × 500 px (3:1). Treat the header as a wide banner rather than a normal post image, and preview it in the account view where it will appear.

Hootsuite’s common LinkedIn image references are 1200 × 627 px (about 1.91:1) for landscape, 720 × 900 px (4:5) for vertical, and 1200 × 1200 px (1:1) for square. For a personal cover photo, the guide gives 1128 × 191 px. Check the account or Page context: a banner is a different placement from a feed post and can be cropped differently.
TikTok image size: organic creative versus ads
The reference for vertical TikTok creative is 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). Hootsuite also lists 1920 × 1080 px (16:9) for a landscape ad and 640 × 640 px (1:1) for a square ad. Those latter dimensions describe ad formats; do not treat them as universal requirements for organic posts. For paid campaigns, check TikTok’s live ad specifications for the exact format and placement before exporting.

YouTube thumbnail and channel banner dimensions
Video thumbnails
YouTube’s official Help recommends custom video thumbnails at 3840 × 2160 px, with a 16:9 ratio and a minimum width of 640 px. It also advises, “For videos, try to upload a thumbnail with an aspect ratio of 16:9.” For Shorts, its guidance recommends 2160 × 3840 px at 9:16 and says to try a 9:16 thumbnail ratio. There is an important Shorts display exception: YouTube says vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may instead show auto-generated 4:5 thumbnails on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail remains on the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. A thumbnail therefore may not look the same in every discovery surface.

Channel banners
YouTube recommends a 2560 × 1440 px channel banner; its minimum upload dimensions are 2048 × 1152 px. At that minimum size, the safe area for text and logos is 1235 × 338 px. Since YouTube crops banners on some device views, put essential text and logos within the safe area rather than near the image’s outer edges. How to choose, crop, and export an image that fits
- Identify the actual placement. Decide whether the asset is for a feed post, Story, Reel, profile or cover image, video thumbnail, or ad. A platform name alone is not enough to determine the correct shape.
- Set the target ratio before resizing. Create a destination-specific crop at the reference dimensions. Do not stretch an image to force it into a new ratio; stretching distorts faces, logos, and objects.
- Protect important content. Keep text, faces, and logos inside the crop-safe area, particularly on vertical placements and banners. Leave clearance for interface elements that can cover the image.
- Export a separate version for each placement. Preserve the original source image, then make a square, portrait, landscape, or vertical version as needed. A single “social media size” is not a reliable master for every surface.
- Preview in context. Inspect the final asset in the platform’s composer, profile, feed, or preview tool. Check the crop on relevant device views; the uploaded dimensions alone cannot guarantee how every placement renders.
- Recheck paid specifications and campaign requirements. Ad formats are not interchangeable with organic-post recommendations. Confirm current platform ad rules before spending on a campaign.
Why the right dimensions can still look wrong
- Aspect-ratio mismatch: The platform may crop the image or leave unused space when its shape differs from the target placement.
- Device-specific rendering: Cover photos and banners can be cropped differently across devices or account contexts. Keep the subject and text away from the edges.
- Interface overlays: Buttons, captions, and other controls can obscure important details in Stories, Reels, and other vertical placements. Preview the actual view.
- Organic versus paid placement: An ad dimension may be appropriate only for that ad format. Verify before applying it to an organic post.
- Outdated or conflicting reference lists: Secondary guides can disagree or combine different placements. For YouTube, prefer its official help pages; for other platforms, validate against current platform guidance where available.

What does aspect ratio mean?
Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height. A 1080 × 1920 px image is 9:16; preserving that ratio while resizing prevents distortion.
Should I use the same file for organic posts and ads?
Only if the specific organic and paid placements accept the same format and crop. Check the live requirements for the ad placement; the TikTok landscape and square sizes listed above are ad references, not universal post sizes.
