A practical social-listening engine is a pipeline, not a single product: approved platform connectors collect posts, Python normalizes and deduplicates them, Gemini labels sentiment, DuckDB stores events and answers analytical queries, and a dashboard or alerting layer delivers the results. The platform connectors, permissions, storage rules, and delivery layer are separate implementation work; neither Gemini nor DuckDB supplies a turnkey social-listening service.
The original title names Gemini 1.5, but that is a historical model-family reference, not evidence that a Gemini 1.5 model is available or appropriate for a new build. Google’s API overview, last updated October 6, 2026, says the Interactions interface became the default in June 2026 and describes generateContent as legacy. Check current model availability and migration guidance before choosing an interface.
What “real-time” means in this design
Here, real-time is an engineering target: new, permitted posts should move through collection, classification, storage, and delivery with a delay the project defines. There is no universal latency target established for this design. Actual freshness depends on whether a platform grants access, how often its API can be polled or sends events, the model’s response time, and the capacity of the ingestion and processing workers.
Gemini’s streaming and Live interfaces do not ingest social posts. They describe ways an application communicates with Gemini. The API reference identifies streamGenerateContent as server-sent-event streaming and Live API as a stateful WebSocket interface for bi-directional real-time conversation. Neither substitutes for a social-platform connector.

Choose the data sources before promising coverage
Decide which platforms, accounts, public content, and search terms the service is meant to cover. For each source, establish the permitted API or other authorized access path, available fields, rate limits, retention restrictions, and rules for sharing data downstream. Access can be limited or revoked, and terms may change. Reddit’s Data API Terms are one platform-specific example: they condition use on ongoing compliance and authorize only use expressly permitted by the applicable terms. That example is not a cross-platform legal review; check the current terms for each selected platform and use case.
Keep each source integration behind a small adapter that yields the same internal event shape. This isolates platform-specific pagination, retries, rate-limit handling, and field mapping from the rest of the pipeline. Store the platform’s post identifier and timestamps where provided; do not assume every source exposes identical fields or timestamps.
Design the event path
A robust prototype separates collection from classification and analytics. That makes retries manageable, preserves the original evidence for review, and prevents a temporary model or dashboard outage from silently dropping collected posts.
- Collect: use an authorized source connector to fetch new posts or receive platform events. Record when each item was collected.
- Normalize: map source-specific fields into a stable event format while preserving the source identifier, source timestamp when available, and an auditable raw payload or normalized representation.
- Deduplicate: identify an event by its platform and platform-specific post ID, or another documented stable key. Make retries idempotent so replaying a page or recovering a worker does not inflate mention counts.
- Classify: send the text and only the context needed for the task to Gemini. Ask for constrained labels and validate the returned data before writing it.
- Persist: store both the event and its classification in a file-backed DuckDB database, retaining enough model and prompt metadata to reproduce and investigate results.
- Aggregate and deliver: use SQL to calculate the metrics the team needs, then refresh a dashboard or emit alerts from those results.
Normalize posts and preserve the audit trail
Keep source facts separate from inferred labels. A normalized record can include a platform name, source post ID, post time if supplied, ingestion time, text, and a reference to the raw payload. The classification record should include the sentiment label, optional confidence or rationale only if the chosen model output schema supports it, model identifier, prompt or schema version, and classification time.
Rank #2
Do not overwrite source text with a cleaned or redacted version without retaining a clear record of the transformation. Remove or protect fields that the project does not need, particularly personal information, and apply the source’s retention and onward-sharing conditions to raw and derived data alike. The exact retention policy depends on the source terms and the intended use.
Use Gemini for a defined labeling task
Sentiment classification is easier to inspect when the task has explicit labels and rules. A practical starting point is positive, negative, neutral, and mixed, with a separate “uncertain” or “not about the brand” outcome if the project needs to distinguish those cases. Define the difference between sentiment toward the brand and sentiment in the post generally; a post can be negative without criticizing the brand.
Request structured output with a fixed schema, then validate every response in Python. Reject or quarantine missing fields, unknown labels, malformed responses, and outputs that do not map to the schema. Keep the prompt version and model identifier with each result. A model’s fluent explanation is not proof that its label is correct, so use human review for ambiguous cases and measure quality on a representative labeled sample.

Choose the Gemini interface for the job
| Interface | What the documentation describes | Fit for this pipeline |
|---|---|---|
| Interactions | Google’s API overview says it became the default interface in June 2026; the current API reference recommends it. | Evaluate for new integrations after checking current model availability and migration guidance. |
streamGenerateContent |
Server-sent-event streaming. | Useful when an application needs incremental model output; it does not stream posts from social platforms. |
| Live API | A stateful WebSocket interface designed for bi-directional real-time conversation. | Designed for interactive conversation patterns, not as a social-data ingestion service. |
generateContent |
Google’s overview describes it as a legacy interface. | Do not assume it is the preferred starting point for a new integration. |
The API reference says requests require an x-goog-api-key header. Keep the key in secret configuration, never in source code, notebooks committed to version control, or logs. Google’s official Python SDK repository documents installation with pip install google-genai and a Python client for the Gemini Developer API. Pin a tested dependency version in a real project and review migration notes before upgrading; the SDK repository warns that methods and behavior can change.
Google’s June 27, 2024 announcement described a 2 million-token context window for Gemini 1.5 Pro and code execution for Gemini 1.5 Pro and Flash. Those are historical announcement details, not evidence of current model availability, pricing, or performance for this use case. The announcement also said the code-execution sandbox was not connected to the internet, so it should not be treated as a way to fetch social posts.
Store events durably in DuckDB
DuckDB’s Python client can read CSV, Parquet, and JSON, query data with SQL, and write query results to Parquet or CSV. A persistent file-backed database is appropriate when data must survive a process restart. An in-memory connection does not persist its data after the process exits.
A basic schema can separate collected posts from model results. The example below is illustrative; choose types and privacy controls to match the fields your authorized sources actually provide.
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS posts (
platform VARCHAR NOT NULL,
source_post_id VARCHAR NOT NULL,
posted_at TIMESTAMP,
ingested_at TIMESTAMP NOT NULL,
text VARCHAR,
raw_payload JSON
);
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS sentiment_results (
platform VARCHAR NOT NULL,
source_post_id VARCHAR NOT NULL,
classified_at TIMESTAMP NOT NULL,
model_id VARCHAR NOT NULL,
prompt_version VARCHAR NOT NULL,
sentiment VARCHAR NOT NULL,
is_about_brand BOOLEAN
);
Use the pair (platform, source_post_id) as the deduplication identity only when the selected sources guarantee that combination is stable and unique. Apply the same identity when retrying classification so a retried result updates or supersedes the prior result according to a deliberate policy rather than becoming an extra mention. If the source does not provide a suitable stable ID, define and document a fallback key and its collision risks.
DuckDB’s Python documentation warns that its module-level global connection is not thread-safe and recommends distinct connections for threads. The DB-API documentation explains that sharing one connection serializes access because it is locked during a query. Use explicitly scoped connection objects and an intentional write strategy; avoid assuming that multiple worker threads can safely share one global connection for parallel database work.
Aggregate results with SQL
Once events and classifications are stored, DuckDB can answer questions such as how sentiment labels vary by day. This example joins on the source identity and groups by the post timestamp; adapt the time zone and window to the reporting question and the timestamp semantics of the source.
SELECT
CAST(p.posted_at AS DATE) AS post_date,
r.sentiment,
COUNT(*) AS mentions
FROM posts AS p
JOIN sentiment_results AS r
ON p.platform = r.platform
AND p.source_post_id = r.source_post_id
WHERE p.posted_at IS NOT NULL
GROUP BY post_date, r.sentiment
ORDER BY post_date, r.sentiment;
Define whether a report uses post time or ingestion time. Post time answers when the conversation happened; ingestion time helps diagnose collection delay and gaps. A useful freshness view can compare the two, but it should not be mistaken for a guaranteed service-level objective.

Deliver dashboards and alerts deliberately
A dashboard can query the stored event and aggregation tables on a schedule suited to the source access and processing capacity. Alerts should be based on a clearly defined window and threshold, with safeguards against duplicate notifications during retries. For example, an alerting rule can require a minimum number of relevant posts before sending a sentiment-change notification; the appropriate threshold is a product decision, not a value established for this design.
Best Value
Track operational signals separately from sentiment: collection success and lag, rate-limit responses, classification failures, malformed model output, duplicate rates, and database write errors. These help explain whether a quiet chart means the public conversation changed or an upstream connector stopped delivering data.
Evaluate sentiment instead of assuming accuracy
No latency, throughput, precision, recall, or sentiment-accuracy result has been established for this proposed engine. Evaluate the actual model, prompt, labels, source mix, and language distribution before using classifications for consequential decisions.
- Draw a representative sample from the sources and date range the system will cover.
- Have people label it using the same written definitions that the model will receive.
- Include difficult examples such as sarcasm, negation, mixed sentiment, slang, language variation, spam, and ambiguous brand names.
- Compare model labels with the human labels and report per-class results, as well as the sample’s source mix, date, and class definitions.
- Review errors, refine the taxonomy or prompt, and repeat the evaluation on data that was not used to tune the prompt.
Do not collapse all errors into one overall score: a model that misses negative brand mentions may be unsuitable even if its average result appears acceptable. Re-evaluate after changing the model, prompt, source mix, or language coverage.
Set project targets before calling the system real-time
Specify the desired freshness in terms that can be measured, such as the maximum acceptable delay from a post’s source timestamp to its appearance in a dashboard. Then measure the components separately: source delivery or polling interval, queue or worker delay, Gemini request and response time, validation and database write time, and dashboard refresh interval. The achievable target is bounded by the slowest relevant stage and the platform’s access constraints.
Likewise, estimate throughput and cost from the chosen sources, request patterns, model, and payload sizes rather than borrowing an unrelated benchmark. No volume, cost, or latency figure is established for this design.
