If the Text actions button is missing in Snipping Tool, first capture a fresh snip and open it in Snipping Tool. Then check for app updates, reopen the app, and restart Windows. If the button still does not appear, try the app’s Repair option and then Reset, if available. Microsoft explains what Text actions does but does not publish a universal cause or guaranteed fix for a missing button.
What Text actions does—and where to find it
Text actions is Snipping Tool’s OCR control: after you capture a snip, it can recognize text in the image so you can copy it. It can also quickly redact email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft says text recognition runs locally on your device. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
To find it, capture a new snip and open that capture in Snipping Tool. The button belongs to the captured-image workflow, so first check that you are not viewing an old screenshot or looking at the capture in a different app.

1. Capture and open a new snip
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to start a capture.
- Select the area to capture.
- Open the resulting capture in Snipping Tool and look for Text actions.
Microsoft documents this shortcut and the post-capture Text actions workflow in its Snipping Tool guide.

2. Update Snipping Tool, reopen it, and restart Windows
Check for Snipping Tool updates using the app-update route available on your device. Close and reopen the app, then restart Windows. Microsoft’s general update guidance recommends checking for updates and restarting to apply them; it does not say these steps specifically restore a missing Text actions button. 3. Repair the app, then consider Reset
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Snipping Tool > Advanced options.
- Select Repair if it is available, then reopen Snipping Tool and check again.
- If the issue remains and Reset is offered, read the Windows prompt before proceeding. Reset may remove app data or settings.
These are general Windows app troubleshooting options, not a Microsoft-confirmed fix for Text actions. Microsoft notes that not all desktop apps support Repair or Reset. See Microsoft’s app troubleshooting guidance.

4. Report the versions if the button is still missing
Note your Windows version and build, along with the Snipping Tool version, and include them when reporting the issue through Microsoft Support or Feedback Hub. Microsoft’s public Text actions instructions do not give a complete current matrix of eligible Windows versions, app builds, language settings, or editions, so those details can help describe your case without assuming a specific cause.
What the version history does—and does not—tell you
Microsoft announced Text Actions for Snipping Tool version 11.2308.33.0 in a Windows Insider rollout on September 14, 2023. The announcement later described a Release Preview rollout with version 11.2308.37.0 and higher. These are historical rollout details, not a verified current minimum version or a universal support matrix. See the Windows Insider announcement.

Do not confuse Text actions with Click to Do. Microsoft’s Click to Do documentation says its Snipping Tool entry point requires version 11.2411.20.0 or later; that is a separate feature and does not establish the version requirement for the original Text actions OCR control. Windows 10 support status is a separate issue
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That means Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates or security fixes under standard support. The end-of-support date does not, by itself, prove that Text actions was removed from Windows 10 or explain why the button is missing. See Microsoft Support.

Capture alternatives are not OCR replacements
If the Snipping Tool shortcut is inconvenient, Microsoft also documents Windows logo key + PrtScn for capturing the screen on supported devices, and Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on devices without a PrtScn key. These are capture alternatives; they do not provide evidence of a replacement for Text actions OCR. See Microsoft’s print-screen shortcut guide.
When not to escalate the fix
The steps documented here support checking the capture context, updating and restarting, and using Repair or Reset when available. They do not establish system-file commands, registry edits, unofficial OCR downloads, or reinstalling Windows as routine first-line fixes for this symptom.
