The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is the stronger platform overall than the Snapdragon 870, based on Qualcomm’s specifications and the available benchmark compilations. The 870 has a higher stated maximum prime-core clock—3.2 GHz versus 3.0 GHz—but the 8s Gen 3 has a different, newer CPU arrangement, a newer GPU and modem generation, and higher aggregate benchmark results. Scores vary by source and phone, so use them as comparisons rather than guaranteed results for every handset.
Specifications: Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 vs Snapdragon 870
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 on March 18, 2024, and the Snapdragon 870 on January 18, 2021. The specifications below describe chipset capabilities; phone makers choose how to implement them, and a handset may not include every optional platform feature.
| Specification | Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 | Snapdragon 870 |
|---|---|---|
| Announcement | March 18, 2024 (Qualcomm announcement) | January 18, 2021 (Qualcomm announcement) |
| Manufacturing process | 4 nm (Qualcomm product brief) | 7 nm (Qualcomm product brief) |
| CPU | 1 prime core up to 3.0 GHz, 4 performance cores up to 2.8 GHz, and 3 efficiency cores up to 2.0 GHz (Qualcomm product brief) | Kryo 585; Qualcomm’s announcement specifies a prime core up to 3.2 GHz (Qualcomm announcement) |
| GPU | Adreno 735; the product brief lists hardware-accelerated ray tracing and Vulkan 1.3 (Qualcomm product brief) | Adreno 650; the product brief lists Vulkan 1.1 (Qualcomm product brief) |
| Memory | LP-DDR5X, up to 4200 MHz, and up to 24 GB density in Qualcomm’s brief (Qualcomm product brief) | LPDDR5 listed by 91Mobiles; the Qualcomm brief reviewed here identifies platform features without stating a comparable memory ceiling (91Mobiles comparison) |
| Modem | Snapdragon X70 (Qualcomm product brief) | Snapdragon X55 (Qualcomm product brief) |
How to interpret the specifications
The 870’s higher prime-core clock does not, by itself, make it faster. The chips use different CPU configurations, and overall performance depends on more than the maximum frequency of one core. The 8s Gen 3’s newer process, GPU generation, and modem generation distinguish the platforms on paper, but a smaller listed process is not a promise of longer battery life.
Memory support is not the same as the RAM installed in a phone. Likewise, modem generation does not establish which carrier bands a handset supports. Check the specifications for the exact phone and regional model; Qualcomm notes that some features can depend on carrier and OEM selection.

Benchmark results: what the comparisons show
Third-party benchmark compilations favor the 8s Gen 3, but they do not produce one universal score. These are results reported by the named comparison pages, accessed in 2026—not Qualcomm guarantees or controlled tests of the same phone with only the chipset changed.

Why AnTuTu totals differ
NanoReview reports AnTuTu 11, while 91Mobiles reports an AnTuTu comparison with substantially different totals, especially for the Snapdragon 870. Benchmark version, device samples, software, and testing conditions affect results. Keep each figure attached to its publisher and test; do not average the totals or present one as the definitive score for every phone.

Peak graphics performance and sustained performance are different
NanoReview’s reported 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stability is 82% for the 8s Gen 3 and 99% for the 870, despite the 8s Gen 3’s higher peak score. That is a reminder that a peak result and stability are separate measures, not proof that every 870 phone sustains more performance. The comparison page compiles results across devices; it is not a matched-phone test.

What the chip comparison means for gaming and everyday use
The aggregate results support the 8s Gen 3 as the faster platform overall, including in CPU and graphics comparisons. They cannot predict the exact frame rate or responsiveness of a particular phone. Cooling design, power settings, memory configuration, operating-system version, game version, and the handset maker’s implementation can all affect real-device behavior.
Rank #3
- For CPU comparisons, look for Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core results from the exact phones you are considering.
- For graphics, compare a named test such as 3DMark Wild Life Extreme and, when available, game tests on the specific handset and software version.
- For sustained gaming, check whether testing reports stability and device temperatures or includes a longer gaming session; peak benchmark scores alone do not answer that question.
- For connectivity, verify the exact model’s supported bands and regional specification rather than relying only on X70 or X55 modem names.
Which should you choose?
Choose a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 phone if performance and newer platform features matter most
On the specifications and benchmark compilations above, the 8s Gen 3 is the stronger choice for a buyer prioritizing CPU/GPU performance and a newer platform. Confirm the precise phone’s RAM, cooling, software, and regional SKU rather than assuming all 8s Gen 3 devices behave alike.
Consider a Snapdragon 870 phone when the phone itself is the better fit
The chipset comparison does not settle whether a particular 870 handset is a better purchase. If the older phone is substantially less expensive or better suited to your needs, compare its complete device specifications and recent device-specific performance evidence against the 8s Gen 3 option. Do not choose based solely on the 870’s 3.2 GHz prime-core figure.

Bottom line
Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 leads the Snapdragon 870 in the available aggregate benchmark comparisons and has newer platform specifications. Treat that as a chipset-level conclusion, not a guarantee that every 8s Gen 3 phone will outperform every 870 phone in every sustained workload. For a purchase, compare exact handset models and configuration alongside the chip.
