Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is Qualcomm’s premium-tier platform, while Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 sits in its 7-series. Their listed CPU peaks are up to 3.8 GHz and 2.8 GHz, respectively, but those figures do not establish how much faster one phone will feel. Qualcomm’s performance percentages compare each chip with its own predecessor, and the available Geekbench 6 figures for the 8 Gen 5 are third-party averages—not a controlled head-to-head test.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 vs Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 specifications

The 8 Gen 5 has the higher positioning and the newer connectivity components listed by Qualcomm. The table summarizes platform specifications and claims; it does not predict the performance of every phone built around either chip.

Specification Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Snapdragon 7 Gen 4
Positioning Premium platform 7-series platform
CPU Custom Oryon CPU; peak speed up to 3.8 GHz CPU speed up to 2.8 GHz

Which is faster, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 or Snapdragon 7 Gen 4?

The 8 Gen 5 has a higher listed maximum CPU clock and Qualcomm positions it as the premium platform. That supports an expectation of a higher performance ceiling, but it does not quantify the direct speed gap. CPU design, power limits, cooling, memory, software and the phone maker’s implementation all affect results; peak clock alone is not a performance test.

Qualcomm’s improvement claims use different baselines

For the 8 Gen 5, Qualcomm reports 36% better CPU performance, 76% better web browsing responsiveness, 11% better graphics rendering and up to 46% improved NPU performance versus Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. For the 7 Gen 4, Qualcomm reports 27% improved CPU performance, 30% faster GPU graphics rendering and 65% improved AI performance compared with its predecessor. These are manufacturer claims against separate previous-generation baselines, not direct percentages comparing the two chips.

What the available Geekbench 6 figures say

CPUTRONIC lists average Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 results of 2,804 points in single-core and 10,057 points in multi-core Geekbench 6. These are third-party compiled averages, not Qualcomm figures. The comparison page does not establish a controlled test of matched phones with identical cooling, memory and software, and the cited material does not provide a comparable controlled 7 Gen 4 result. Treat the scores as indicative rather than as a guaranteed result for a particular handset or proof of the exact gap between platforms.

What the specs cannot tell you about gaming, heat or battery life

Neither clock speed nor a synthetic benchmark score establishes game frame rates, sustained performance, phone temperature or battery endurance. Those depend on the handset’s cooling system, power settings, display and battery as well as the workload. Qualcomm’s platform pages describe advertised features; they are not same-condition independent phone tests.

Connectivity specifications also describe platform capabilities, not necessarily what a particular phone supports. Device makers determine which features they implement, and actual network speeds depend on the network and local conditions.

How to choose between phones using these chips

Compare the actual phones, not just their chipset names. Before buying, check:

  • Exact regional model: Confirm that the specific version sold in your country uses the advertised chipset.
  • Performance evidence: Prefer independent results from the same benchmark version and clearly identified phone models. Check test conditions, especially for sustained workloads.
  • Cooling and battery behavior: Look for device-specific testing rather than inferring heat or endurance from the processor specification.
  • Memory and storage: Compare the configurations offered in the exact models you are considering.
  • Features enabled by the manufacturer: Camera, audio, gaming and on-device AI capabilities depend on the handset’s hardware and software implementation.
  • Support and price: Compare software-support commitments and the current price of each phone; chipset positioning alone does not establish better value.
