The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the newer platform, and Qualcomm says it can deliver up to 30% better CPU performance and up to 25% better GPU performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Those are manufacturer claims, not guarantees that every Gen 3 phone will outperform every Gen 2 phone by those amounts. The phone’s cooling, configuration, software and workload all affect real-world results.
What is the difference between Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Gen 2?
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 on October 24, 2023, following the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, introduced in November 2022. The Gen 3 moves to a different CPU core layout, adds newer platform capabilities and carries Qualcomm’s headline performance claims against Gen 2.
| Area | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 |
|---|---|---|
| CPU configuration or speed | One prime core up to 3.4 GHz, five performance cores up to 3.2 GHz and two efficiency cores up to 2.3 GHz, according to Qualcomm’s product brief. Maximum clock configuration can vary. | Up to 3.36 GHz, according to Qualcomm’s product page; speed can depend on platform version and device. |
| GPU | Qualcomm claims up to 25% better GPU performance and up to 25% better GPU power efficiency than Gen 2. | Qualcomm’s launch claim of up to 25% faster GPU performance compared Gen 2 with Gen 1, not Gen 3. |
| CPU performance and efficiency | Qualcomm claims up to 30% better CPU performance and up to 20% better CPU power efficiency than Gen 2. | The CPU-efficiency comparison in Qualcomm’s launch materials used Gen 1 as the baseline. |
| AI | Qualcomm lists a Hexagon NPU and advertises 98% faster Hexagon NPU performance than the predecessor. | Qualcomm’s launch materials describe a Hexagon AI Engine, including INT4 support. |
| Connectivity | Qualcomm’s brief lists an X75 5G modem, Wi-Fi 7 through FastConnect 7800 and Bluetooth 5.4. | Qualcomm lists an X70 modem and describes Wi-Fi 7 support in its launch materials. |
| Process and memory | Qualcomm’s brief lists 4 nm process technology, LPDDR5x support up to 4800 MHz and memory density up to 24 GB. |
The table summarizes selected published details, not every platform feature. A listed capability does not mean a phone maker enables it in every handset or regional model. The 3.4 GHz Gen 3 maximum also should not be assumed for every version.

The baseline matters: Qualcomm’s Gen 2 launch release makes comparisons to Gen 1. Its older percentages cannot be treated as a direct Gen 2-versus-Gen 3 result. For a head-to-head comparison, use the Gen 3 claims that explicitly identify Gen 2 as the predecessor.
What do benchmark results tell you?
A chip specification or manufacturer comparison does not predict the score or sustained speed of every phone. Qualcomm’s product brief puts the limitation plainly: “All comparisons made are in reference to previous generation, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. Results will vary, depending on OEM implementation and other factors.” It also notes that battery life varies with device, settings and usage.

Phone design and test conditions can change the outcome. Cooling affects how long a phone can sustain demanding workloads; software, memory configuration and power settings can affect benchmark runs. A peak result and a sustained result answer different questions: the former reflects a short run, while the latter is more relevant to prolonged gaming or other heavy use.
No matched-device benchmark scores are established here, so there is no substantiated Geekbench, AnTuTu, 3DMark, temperature, gaming or battery figure to report. To judge a specific comparison, look for tests that identify both phone models and variants, benchmark app and version, software state, test mode and whether the score is peak or sustained.

Which should you choose?
Choose a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone if
- You want the newer of these two platforms and its higher advertised performance ceiling.
- You expect to use demanding CPU, graphics or on-device AI workloads and are comparing phones with suitable cooling and implementation.
A Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phone may still suit you if
- The particular handset meets your needs and offers a better overall fit in areas such as price, battery, camera, display or software support.
- You are choosing between actual phones rather than chips in isolation; platform generation alone does not establish which device is better value or performs better over a long session.
Compare the exact phone model and regional variant before buying. Qualcomm’s platform specifications describe what a chip can support; the handset maker decides how those capabilities are implemented.
