In the Geekbench 6 results reported by Tom’s Guide, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 reference device scored 3,832 in single-core and 12,208 in multi-core, while an iPhone 17 Pro with Apple’s A19 Pro scored 3,701 and 9,460. That puts the Snapdragon reference device slightly ahead in single-core and more clearly ahead in multi-core—but the figures compare different phones, not the processors under matched conditions.

What the specifications tell you

These processors are mobile platforms implemented inside complete phones. A chip’s published capabilities do not by themselves determine a handset’s speed: the phone maker’s configuration, cooling, and performance behavior also matter.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Qualcomm publishes product information and a product brief for Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, but directs readers to individual phone makers for CPU-speed details. A Snapdragon phone’s implementation may therefore differ from another model’s; check the specifications for the exact handset rather than assuming every device uses identical CPU speeds or behaves the same under heat. Apple A19 Pro

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications identify the A19 Pro implementation as having a six-core CPU—two performance cores and four efficiency cores—a six-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a 16-core Neural Engine, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. These are specifications for A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro, not a guarantee that another product or workload will perform identically. Apple iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications

Geekbench 6 results: Snapdragon reference device vs iPhone 17 Pro

Tom’s Guide reports the following Geekbench 6 scores for the named devices. Higher scores indicate better results on that benchmark run, but the two rows are not a controlled, processor-only comparison. Tom’s Guide’s comparison and reported scores

Device tested Processor Geekbench 6 single-core Geekbench 6 multi-core
Qualcomm reference device Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 3,832 12,208
iPhone 17 Pro Apple A19 Pro 3,701 9,460

In these reported runs, the reference device is 131 points higher in single-core and 2,748 points higher in multi-core. The single-core results are relatively close; the multi-core gap is larger. Neither difference establishes how every Snapdragon phone will compare with every A19 Pro phone: the test involved a reference platform and a retail iPhone, with different hardware designs and potentially different operating conditions.

Why early benchmark comparisons need context

Notebookcheck’s initial report characterized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as performing on par with A19 Pro in official benchmarks and noted that results from additional devices could change the comparison. That characterization and the Geekbench 6 figures above are not interchangeable measurements: identify the benchmark and device whenever citing a score, and avoid combining results from different benchmark versions. A reference device can show what one platform achieved in a particular run; it cannot show that every shipping phone will reproduce the result. Retail phones may have different cooling systems, power limits, and performance profiles. For a better comparison, look for the same benchmark version and workload run on the specific phones you are considering.

What Apple’s sustained-performance claim means

Apple’s September 9, 2025 launch announcement says A19 Pro, when paired with the iPhone’s vapor chamber, enables “up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation.” This is Apple’s claim about an improvement over the previous generation. It is not a measured A19 Pro-versus-Snapdragon result, and it should not be read as one. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro launch announcement

Which processor should you choose?

Choose between actual phone models, not processor names in isolation. The cited benchmark results favor the Snapdragon reference device, but they do not establish which retail phone will be faster for your workload.

  • For short CPU-heavy tasks: use Geekbench single-core and multi-core scores from the exact phone models you are comparing, with the same benchmark version and test conditions where possible.
  • For gaming or long workloads: prioritize repeated performance and the phones’ cooling behavior over a single short benchmark peak. The cited comparison does not provide matched, sustained gaming or graphics tests.
  • For graphics and AI workloads: compare relevant tests on the specific phones. Apple lists its iPhone 17 Pro’s GPU, Neural Accelerators, Neural Engine, and ray tracing support, but those specifications alone do not establish a cross-platform performance ranking.
  • For everyday use: weigh the complete phone experience, including software ecosystem and price, alongside processor scores. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison of those factors.
